Women's soccer earns comeback win

Three second half goals led the Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over George Washington on Sunday at Transamerica Field. While the 49ers were celebrating Senior Day, it was a duo of underclassmen - freshman Lacey McGowan (2) and sophomore Macky Wingo (1) - who did the scoring.

The Colonials a 2-0 lead in the first half, putting Charlotte's 23-game unbeaten streak against Atlantic 10 competition in jeopardy.

The 49ers' first goal came off a Hailey Beam corner kick in the 65th minute on the right side of the field. Beam’s kick curled to six yards out from the goal where McGowan jumped over the GW defenders and headed the ball into the back of the net.

“Our concern at halftime was to take the game one goal at a time instead of coming out and make up the deficit all at once,” said Beam. “Once we got the first goal I knew we were going to come back and win.”

Charlotte (13-2-1, 7-0-1) will end the regular season with a three-game road swing - Friday at Temple, next Sunday at Saint Joseph's and Oct. 30 at Saint Louis.
