49ers getting 1st football marketing exposure

The 49ers have a deal with Coca-Cola to promote the school's new football program.

Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated has designed a standup image of 49ers mascot Norm The Niner in the Heisman Trophy pose. It will be part of a 49ers-Coke display at selected Charlotte-area retailers. The displays will go into stores later this month and November.

Coca-Cola will also have a special 49ers T-shirt giveaway with the purchase of Coke products at Outtakes locations on the UNC Charlotte campus.

Now we can get a Coke or a Pepsi! Just kidding Dale Halton!

Go NINERS!

A brand new Charlotte 49er football team could give Coke Zero a whole new meaning.

How did Dale Halton let this one slide by?

Both people at the game can enjoy a Coke.

I guess I'm going to have to buy more coke products.

I used to intern with the Athletic Dept and it was bad news if I was drinking a Coke inside of the arena. Still loving the move; GO NINERS!!!

Wow, what a terrible PR move for the University as a whole. With all the support that Dale Halton has given to UNCC over the past 10 years, you would think the Pepsi would be a given even though she did sell Pepsi Bottling of Charlotte to PepsiCo a few years ago.

Hmmm, is that a commercial use of a trademarked icon?? UNCC and Coke marketing, you may want to run that idea by the legal department first.

On Monday, August 15, 2005, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for the Heisman logo. This trademark is owned by Heisman Trophy Trust, a New York trust, comprising William J. Dockery, Michael J. Comerford, James E., 17 Battery Place, Suite 943, New York , 10004

Big decisions like this usually aren't made without running them by the schools big donors first. There is no way that Judy Rose didn't discuss with Pepsi the possibility of a partnership before contacting Coke, and I am sure that Dale Halton was made aware of this before anyone. As long as the basketball program remains exclusive with Pepsi, I am sure Halton can agree this is a great thing for the football program and her beloved 49ers.

yay

The Heisman logo is trademarked, not the pose. I'm yet to see somebody trademark a pose, although you've given me an idea. If I trademark "flipping the bird", I'll make millions from angry motorists every year!

The UNC-Charlotte 49ers athletic dept better get their ducks in a row and get rid of this Rose idiot with her asinine new name or else sponsors will walk away. Tens of thousands of alumni will not support a team with this "cheap gimmick" label and neither will big corp sponsors and Pepsis Halton could be pissed.

U N C C 49ers

Anon 7:06AM, I'm an FSL owner, I support the team, and Coke sponsoring the 49ers program won't turn me away, nor will Rose's decision to accept it. Pepsi has and had every chance to sponsor the football team, and Coke beat them to the punch. Regardless, the school wins. There isn't an exclusive contract to only use Coke, so Pepsi doesn't have to get mad. I think people like yourself are just overly sensitive and not seeing the benefit it brings to the University.

asinine new name?

The name of the athletics teams was changed to Charlotte TEN years ago.

Also, Dale Halton just donated another million to the CHARLOTTE athletic teams for a new tennis facility. She must be alright with the new name.

Never knew there were so many bitter 49er haters out there. Get over yourselves and stop feeling so threatened...GO NINERS!

David, can you confirm when these displays will go out? THIS Oct-November or NEXT? The school's website mentions the 2011 season......

My God I've never seen people so pent up over Pepsi or Coke. Who really cares? Coke or Pepsi the University wins. Also, calling ourselves Charlotte was to create a brand. UNC Charlotte blends too much with the stigma that we're a step child to Chapel Hill... who has apparently deemed themselves THE UNC.

Great news for our university. I'm looking forward to continuing attracting many more sponsors as time inches closer. Really excited about the future of the program and the school. I hope all the haters are soaking all this in.

Just to clear up some facts. Dale Halton was the former owner of Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. Halton Arena is named in her honor as will be half of our new tennis facility. She and the Hayes are probably our two biggest private athletics donors. You can only drink Pepsi products in Halton Arena, but at Hayes stadium you only have Coke products. I have no doubt Dale signed off on this deal, especially considering she has also donated money toward the football program and sits on our Board of Trustees.

This is really cool!
Now, I would love to sit in Lowes Home Improvement Stadium...

This is great news for the University. Oh yeah, Lol at the haters.

My only disappointment with this is that I am a die-hard Pepsi man. But I'll be happy to drink a Coke at the new football stadium on 8/31/13 - probably in between beers. :-)

GO NINERS!!!!!!
