49ers men's basketball coach Alan Major has suspended three players -- Shamari Spears and An'Juan Wilderness for today's game against Gardner-Webb and Phil Jones for Saturday's against S.C. State -- for "violating team policy."
Major, in making the announcement just hours before today's season opener against Gardner-Webb would not discuss the nature of the violations, which occurred between the end of last season and the start of this season, according to a university news release.
“Our student-athletes understand the rules and that they are going to be held accountable,” said Major in a statement. “As we move forward, we want to continue to build a program in which players understand how they can impact the team as individuals, and strive to ensure that the mark they make is positive.”

Having Spears out stinks, but I think we'll be fine tonight.
Please don't drop a game to Gardner-Webb. I bet these suspensions are academic.

There were some stupid things said on several players' Twitter accounts this week, I would imagine it has something to do with that. It is sad though, not the kind of start you want for three seniors.

Scholarships for athletes,say $40k per player for 4 years. How does that make you feel working and going to school.
There is a new sheriff in town. Lutz let these guys do what they damn well felt like doing but those days are over.
thank you anonymous 6:36 pm. It is about time we get a coach that has backbone. These players need to learn that individual actions can jeopardize the team. It was proven tonight. I still belive in Coach Major and things will be ok.
I agree too with 6:36 as well. I was upset at first with the loss, but Coach Major is setting the tone for the season and beyond.
