As he prepared for Tuesday's basketball exhibition against the Charlotte 49ers, Queens coach Wes Long studied film of last season's late collapse that saw the 49ers lose seven of their final eight games and fail to make the postseason.
Here's what he noticed about the 49ers.
"It didn't look like they played very hard at the end of last season," said Long after the 49ers won 94-57 Tuesday.
If that's what it was, then Charlotte was a different team Tuesday. This edition of the 49ers -- with a new coach in Alan Major and a new point guard in Jamar Briscoe -- played a tougher, more physical brand of basketball than Charlotte fans might be used to seeing.
"There was a Big 10 influence in their play," said Long. "They jammed the cutter and played with a physicality in their defense."
Makes sense, since Major comes to Charlotte from Ohio State, where he was an assistant for six seasons.
Charlotte outrebounded the smaller Royals 47-27, getting 27 defensive boards.
"They beat us up on defense," said Long. "Which is how they do it where he came from."

I know it was only an exhibition, but this was a much different basketball team than we saw last year. Shot selection was much better, and we played with an intensity that was seriously missing last season. Deuce looked excellent, and Spears played the way he was supposed to. I really want to see Sirin get the ball more, he was lights out. Also, Queens should really be proud of themselves, they brought a great crowd.
Good showing by the Niners. The Niners should be fun to watch this year.
30pt win by the Niners great way to open the season. Jamar Briscoe is a very good PG and only a sophmore.. WOW
don't get too excited niner fans.....it was queens there divison two and they don't have a player out of the state of north carolina. you'll still get rocked in the A-10 this year.

We know who we were playing, but it was still exciting to see a new coach kick things off. I really think this will be a great year in the A-10 for us. I'm not saying we will win, but there is no reason we can't finish in the top 3. We played well in the conference last year until the last few games, and we have gotten better since then. We just have to find a way to stay strong through the end of the season.
The first half it looked as if we had not changed coaches at all. The 2nd half was better and we had good ball movement and more intense D. There were definitly defenseive lapses at times, but hopefully that all gets worked out in the next 2 games. The Charleston Tourney will be tough.

True, an exhibition against a Division II school should be taken in proper context. But it's good to see them play well. We have had plenty of these type of exhibition games in the past where the outcome was in doubt far too long. Hopefully this is the start of a great season. GO NINERS!
not really sure if it is Coach Long's responsibility to criticize last year's team...and in effect, Coach Lutz. Coaches should know that there is a gentlemens agreement not to call each other out. He just alienated himself from Coach Lutz and the rest of Lutz's coaching network.
