Another football milestone comes up later today for the Charlotte 49ers.
Although the walk-on tryouts that begin at 4 p.m. this afternoon probably won't yield but a few players who will be on Charlotte's roster when the 49ers begin football in 2013, it is the program's first "official" practice.
Coach Brad Lambert says he hopes 5-10 players will be good enough to be invited back to practice with the rest of the squad in August. The team -- made up of redshirt freshmen -- will practice all fall but won't have any games to play.
The walk-on tryouts -- all candidates have already registered, so nobody should just show up expecting to practice -- will be held on the school's recreation fields above the Wachovia Fieldhouse and softball stadium.
-- Two 49ers basketball recruits will play in the regional game in Saturday's Jordan Brand Classic at Time Warner Cable Arena. Guards Shawn Lester (Mooresville) and Denzel Ingram (Chapel Hill) will be in the game that begins at 4:30 p.m. Ingram, incidentally, will sign his letter of intent with the 49ers on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Chapel Hill High.

Can you do some digging on our conference situation. Don't just call Judy and when she says nothing that is the end of it. Ask some of these coaches, recruits, etc. What are the recruits being told? Some have already mentioned CUSA. There is smoke in the air. Just take a look at the ECU Chancellor's comments yesterday.

12:48 - I believe Charlotte and ECU played in the 2010-11 season. Twice, in fact. ECU won one, Charlotte won one. And what exactly has ECU's basketball team won in the last.... ever? And trust me, as long as Jeff Lebo is your coach, you're never going to get past the NIT.
Lester/Ingram/Clayton - I'm surprised there hasn't been 50 anonymous postings here that since Alan Major recruited them, they are evil, vile, sub-human pond scum, but if they decided to go to State instead because Lutz coaches there, they would instantly become the second, third and fourth coming of J.C.
Anonymous 12:59, I remember baseball people who dismissed the creation of the Florida Marlins in the same way. They have two World Champion titles now, including one against the Yankees when they Yanks had a payroll about FOUR TIMES that of the Marlins.
It will all be in how they build the team. Potential recruits might want to consider the fact that Charlotte has an actual NFL team in the city.
Nobody is claiming they will be a winner right away, but you never know how it's going to develop. At least it should be fun!
Coach Lambert has said that he plans to model our team after ODU with the early success they've had. In their first season, they went 9-2, with their biggest loss being by 5 points. Whether or not we can do the same, nobody knows yet. But one thing's for sure: anyone posting that we will be blown out by 50 and never win a road game certainly doesn't have the slightest inkling of a clue about what's possible at Charlotte. So I suggest shutting up now, or else you will be shut up in 2013 when we make you all look like idiots. The childish name-calling and petty insults will be drowned out by chants of "FORTY NINERS". Carry on trolls, and GO NINERS!

What's up with all the haters out there? Charlotte's first class was pretty good with a couple of good players. Yall are right Charlotte wont compete with North Carolina or any FBS school for a couple of year because they will be playing in the FCS, so you can't really compare the schools at this point. If you are from this area you should be excited for Charlotte to get a program that should have been started a long time ago
