Charlotte 49ers leaving a conference they've dominated

Before Charlotte heads off to Conference USA in 2013, this week might be a good time to quickly reflect how dominant the 49ers have been in the league they're now one year away from departing.

Charlotte's victories in the Atlantic 10's men's and women's outdoor track championships last weekend are a reminder of how strong the 49ers have been in most every sport since they joined in 2005.

The 49ers have won 44 regular-season or tournament conference team championships over that period of time, far more than any other Atlantic 10 school.

Yes, none of those titles have come in men's basketball. But sports like baseball, golf and track have been the A-10's unquestioned standard bearers over the years. Other sports, like women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball and men's tennis have all won league crowns.

Will there be that kind of across-the-board success in Conference USA for Charlotte?

Notes

• The 49ers baseball team (20-26, 8-9) remains in ninth place in the Atlantic 10, two games out of the sixth and final spot for the league tournament in the standings. Charlotte is two games (but tied in the loss column) behind sixth-place Fordham (12-9). Charlotte's final two league series are at home this weekend against first-place Saint Louis (33-15, 14-7) and St. Bonaventure (18-22, 6-12).
• Charlotte's fifth-seed softball team opens play in the Atlantic 10 tournament Wednesday against No. 4 George Washington in St. Louis … The 49ers golf team, which had its string of six consecutive Atlantic 10 championships snapped last week, will play in the NCAA tournament for an eighth straight time this week. The 49ers will be the 12th seed in the 14-team regional Friday through Sunday at Greensboro's Grandover Resort.

But, we didn't in the only sport that matter to those who donate to the Foundation and buy season tickets. So, we've moved on and found a new sport to enjoy and if basketball catches up, let us know.

Bruce said...

Football and basketball are all that matter...Guess what? They'll either be at the bottom or near it in both sports. Just sayin'

Anonymous said...

No way clueless Bruce!

Bruce said...

UNCC will be near the top in most sports in Conference USA as well like golf/soccer/track/chess/etc...but ECU will always own football and Memphis in basketball. The sports that "really matter" UNCC will never be at the top. Sad. Just sad.

Alex said...

Bruce, I'd care more about your opinion if you'd done your homework and learned that Memphis is leaving C-USA as we enter. Go troll elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

Memphis hah, Louisville and Cincy to boot in Conference USA. LOL. Bruce, go back to your New Jersey songs, you have no clue!

Bruce said...

I guess it really doesn't matter when it comes to basketball or football which conference UNCC is in. They'll be the doormat in those 2 sports...the good news is they always have soccer! Bawhahahahaha...

Alex said...

The 49er's baseball team has a losing record? Who knew?? Lol...

Anonymous said...

How'd this Bruce fellow tear himself away from 610 AM long enough to post?

Anonymous said...

They certainly didn't dominate it in basketball. Basketball pays the bills. Not soccer, baseball, or golf.

It is hilarious UNCC 49ers is going back to the future in CUSA where they were kicked out for the confusing name change.

Observer clowny idiots and the thorny Rose AD are laughed at and mocked routinely for their ignorance and stupidity throughout Div One but do not know it.

Do everyone a favor and call it the correct name as UNCC 49ers regardless of the Rose idiot and her confused BS to avoid looking stupid like her making a mockery of the entire school.

Everything does not have to have an enemy dead queen only name attached to it who was responsible for killing 5000 Americans in 1777.
Dont worship the dead hefer. Disgrace the royal bitch ho. Stop being a deliberate Tory traitor. Maybe Amrerica needs to likewise worship Hitler and his Nazis? No difference.
America is still devoid of royalty even today 230 yrs later.

Football will also pay the bills...Campbell, Chowan, North Greenville, UNC....Pembroke...will also help pay the bills...that's at least 4 losses on our schedule...Lol

@2:36 what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It's Charlotte for sports, get over it and find something else to complain about.

Anon 2:37 -

"our"?

You, of all people, are a fan now? Judging by the stupidity of your barely readable posts from the past, I would have doubted that. You certainly don't sound like you got an education - either at Charlotte or anywhere else.

Anonymous said...

To Bruce (LolTroll) and the person obsessed with our "dead queen name":

Why don't you both start your own blogs where you can rant multiple times per day about the exact same things you always rant about? That way the people who want to read about your s#!t (only yourselves) can read it, and the people who don't care about your s#!t (everyone else in the world) don't have to. The two of you are usually responsible for about 50% of the comments here, and it's tiring to have to wade through your filth to find intelligent responses. GO AWAY! Neither of you has a clue!

Bruce said...

Let's face it...UNCC is a complete joke in basketball and soon-to-be football...Bawhahahaha

Anonymous said...

Bruce didn't get in. He went to Cpcc instead and has never gotten over it.

Anonymous said...

UNCC excepts EVERYONE!

Anonymous said...

UNCC won;t dominate in golf. UTEP, UAB, and Tulsa are all better.

Take away Tulsa, Rice, and Tulane, and all you have is a conference full of directional schools and satellite campuses.

Bubba Sparx said...

UNCC will dominate in soccer and....wait for it...losing in all other sports....Just sayin'

Anon 3:18

Charlotte doesn't ACCEPT people who don't know the difference between "accept" and "except". Which means I guess you could never get in. Lol!

Anonymous said...

Look at the bright side of things...UNCC will "probably" have more wins in mens basketball than the Charlotte Boobcats did...probably...GO NINERS!

Anonymous said...

2:36 - Where are you from? We need to know so we can alert the authorities there that, if you did in fact get a high school diploma, it needs to be revoked.

Not only are you a rambling fool, you don't even have your information straight. Charlotte got kicked out of C-USA because of their name? Pass me some of what you're smoking. C-USA made it crystal clear in 2003 that it was intent on raising the conference profile through football. Charlotte, with no football on the horizon at that time, realized that not having a football team would make us not welcome there, so we went looking for a new home, and ended up with the A-10. And, as David points out, we have completely dominated the A-10 except in men's hoops - and that went downhill because Bobby Lutz was completely impotent when it came to recruiting A-10 players. In case you haven't noticed - and with the IQ you display on this blog, I'm sure you haven't - the best A-10 programs are comprised of football player-sized post players and one or two 3-point specialists to try to open up lane space. Lutz just kept recruiting C-USA players - about 8 or 9 3-point specialists and the occasional 6'8", 225 lb center with a severe attitude problem. The other A-10 teams quickly figured out they could use all their football player-style players to beat the crap out of all our perimeter players so that they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, while they kept 1 guy down low to beat up our 1 post player. Lutz never adjusted and got fired. His replacement inherits a roster of 13 thugs and head cases. When he can't win with the thugs and head cases, he chases them all off and idiots like you call for his head because he can't win with Lutz's thugs and head cases - conveniently forgetting that Lutz didn't win with them either his last 5 years here - and moan while Lutz excels as a lead assistant at a school with 5 times the athletic budget as ours.

Now we're going back to C-USA, where a team with 1 or 2 real basketball players should go 14-2 in conference, and where ECU is held up as the football gold standard, which is pretty damn pathetic. Yes, the competition will be lesser in hoops, but we should flourish there.

Please let us know when you slip, fall and hit your head on the pavement and have an accidental coherent thought.

Anonymous said...

J, I know you're a Charlotte fan, but about 50% of your post was Bull crap too. I'm sure you can figure out which parts I mean.

Anonymous said...

It still mystifies me how UNCC fans can talk about how other football teams aren't that good when they still don't even have a team yet.

Also, making the move to CUSA won't automatically give UNCC good basketball players. CUSA may be an even worse basketball league than the A10, and they didn't do so hot recruiting there...

Anonymous said...

UNCC is a soccer school. Enough said.

Anonymous said...

UNCC will always be sub-par...The best kids in the state will always opt for UNC or Duke and the best kids in Charlotte will want to leave home. Truth is UNCC has great academics but has never really been a consistent powerhouse.

Anonymous said...

I hope Bruce is asking for his parents' permission before using the PC. Not many parents of an 8 year old like the idea of their kid using a PC without letting them know.

Anonymous said...

Anon 5:03pm...so true..

Bruce said...

UNCC is the "little turd" in the A-10...Ha! Ha!!

Anonymous said...

All i have to say is two things:
1) Can't wait for the first ECU-Charlotte football game; and
2) Charlotte got to the big leagues without playing single game while App State, Richmond, Davidson and all those Southern conference scubs are still in the development (minor) league!

How you'se fools like them apples! sons!

Anonymous said...

My UNCC degree won me a high paying job in technology. I really don't care of someone's opinions of our athletics programs.

I really like the guy who said Charlotte will "except" anyone.

CarolinaDrums said...

most of these posts are really pathetic....from puerile ways of thinking and responding to utter stupidity and ignorance. UNC Charlotte - the largest public University from Columbia to Raleigh/Chapel Hill and from ECU to eastern Tennessee, WILL, without a doubt, become a major force in football and basketball, as well as other sports like soccer, baseball, golf, etc. in the Southland. One need only to look at the growth of the institution over the last 10 years and realize that a decade or so from now UNC Charlotte will most likely be the largest public institution in North Carolina. It's inevitable given its location and the demography of the MSA of Charlotte and surrounds.

Anonymous said...

Charlotte 49ers = good in the all the sports nobody cares about.

Anonymous said...

J 3:29 - The question is where are you from? I hope that you are not a past, present or future student. What kind of fan are you calling the players thugs and head cases? They are not perfect (and neither are you) but they are not thugs and head cases!

It amazes me that people seem to be excited about flourishing in hoops because the competition will be lesser. We should be wanting the competition to get better so that Charlotte hoops can improve. Striving to flourish in lesser competition in Div I hoops doesn't sound that good to me.

Anonymous said...

In C-USA, I think Charlotte will be competitive in Men's Basketball, Men & Womens Soccer, T&F and Golf. I see them finishing middle of the league in Football and Baseball. It's going to take us time to reach the level of competitiveness of a CUSA. We will be playing with the big boys now. No more of this week A-10 stuff. Id say give Football 3-5 years and we will see some bowl games hopefully.

Bruce said...

Anon 7:29pm...Bawhahahahah...UNCC won't see a bowl game until Butch Davis becomes the coach...Just sayin'

Anonymous said...

Its about time they left a conference they had little to no presence in such as the crappy Atlantic 10. Good riddence to this bad conference that yielded nothing more tahn 2 NIT appearences and ruined a good coach's career.

Anonymous said...

Dominated? Are you kidding me! This school has done nothing in Atlantic 10 in the biggest sport that matters: basketball. Look at the last 4 seasons. Charlotte has only won no more than 30% of their last 10 games. Late season collapses in basketball is what cause this program to move to Conference USA instead of staying in the forgetable Atlantic 10.

Anonymous said...

8:55, could you be any dumber. The A10 has been ranked 7th in the nation the lasy few years. The great ACC was 6th. Yeah, the A10 is "forgettable". Its good, but Charlotte needed an FBS home for football and better competition in all other sports. They are getting both, with only a minor downgrade in basketball (conference) which doesn't necessarily mean it will be bad for our team.

These App fans are funny. App has had some recent success in SMALL COLLEGE FOOLTBALL. They have done nothing in other sports. They are a good teachers college, but that's about it. Well, they have a good music program too.

UNCC has a D1 Basketball FINAL FOUR, 2 D1 Soccer FINAL FOURs, and a 3rd place and a 5th place National Finish in D1 Golf. They have roughly 20 Post Season Appearances in NCAA D1 Basketball, and have been regulars in NCAA Baseball, NCAA Soccer, and NCAA Track and Field.

UNCC is also one of only 3 Advanced Research Institutions in the state.

App needs to prove themselves in something other than small college football if they expect to move up. I like App, but I don't think they are ready yet.

Anonymous said...

Ha! Charlotte did horrible in the A-10 for hoops. A-10 sends 3-4 teams every year to the tourney, Charlotte barely ever finished in the top half of the league. I don't understand how Charlotte fans can rip the A-10 unless you are a soccer or track fan. I did not want UNCC to leave. But the A-10 gains Butler and loses Charlotte, not bad for hoops.

Do you honestly believe that the kids you once cheered are such poor representatives of our school? It is the new head coach who should be able to coach kids and not makes excuses why we have done so poorly so quickly.

Say what you want about Lutz, but show me the progress "His replacement" has made besides removing everyone except Braswell.

Yeah, seriously, J - that was absolutely awful and embarrassing to read.

Before you judge anyone else's character, perhaps you should question why on earth you would publicly trash the integrity of 13 players and the former coach.

Totally uncalled for. Is this how you usually treat people that you don't know?

Anonymous said...

J reminds me of most of the remaining posters on Niner Nation, showing complete disrespect toward anyone who disagrees with him. He also obviously knows very little about our players if he thinks they are/were all thugs. KJ is a great kid and should not have been chased away. He would have been a contributor for us too.

Anonymous said...

Is J referring to the same 13 players that won 19 games during Bobby's final year and then won only won 9 or 10 games during Major's first year? What are we missing here?

Anonymous said...

How in the world did an article about moving to CUSA get comments about former Coach Lutz?!?!

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with anon 1032 -

J is symptomatic of everything wrong with ninernation.

You need to bash former players, boast how much you hate the old coach, and hate the fanbase. Label everyone a troll and encourage people to leave.

And all it does is turn off fans who have fond memories of the team. It's a shame that a few fans who are completely full of themselves have to spoil the party for everyone else.

Anonymous said...

To Anon-10:45pm. You're missing the fact that Majors had to let go some of his best players because of behavioral or academic problems and only had half a team on his roster. Also, he had to start over from scratch this year. Whether you like him or hate him it is silly to think that Major was going to cause damage to the A-10 his first year. Majors is doing what all the other Big 10 coaches usually do. They start off hiring recruiters as basketball assistants to help open up recruiting pipelines. Once that is established, the assistant coaches will gradually be replced with coaches who have expertise in defensive and offfensive plays. It's going to take Charlotte another year or two but when that happens they will be on top of Conf-USA.

I find it ironic that Major's supporters do not even know his name. It is Major, not Majors. It is even more ironic that for the 3rd year in a row we will hear he is starting over this year. He is not. This is his 3rd year. If he cannot keep or manage his players, that is a strike against him. No more excuses.

To the person that claimed Lutz's teams were loaded with thugs, you have no clue what you are talking about. What would players like Charles Dewhurst, Jobey Thomas, or Leemire Goldwire think if they had read that? The Alan Major supporters have now stooped to talking trash about their own players in public. I hope he starts winning but I am doubtful at this point.

So tiny little 2 year 250 student Charlotte College is counted in the 100,000 graduate at UNCC? This is hilarious. Wheres the connection? A tiny private 2 yr junior college and a large public university owned by the state are not the same. Not even close.

Total crock.

Charlotte College and UNCC are completely 2 different institutions and to combine them as one is BOGUS AS HELL. Apples and oranges. Night and day.

Obviously the spin doctors and CO are trying their beat to brainwash all into this total illusion.

To you UNCC haters, I guess we also need to not the grads of Appalachian State Teacher's College as part of the graduates of Appalachian State University. My guess is I just stepped on some toes, but I will continue. We'll have to not allow grads of Greensboro's Women's College to be part of UNCG, we'll have to not allow grads of NC State Agricultural College to be a part of NC State University, and I'm sure some former grads of Wake College College are going to be upset when they hear the news they are no longer considered a Wake Forest Deacon.

Some of you have way too much time on your hands.

And to continue my comment, Those of you bashing our players need to become NBA fans. There is no place for you in collegiate sports.

The fact is it looks like perhaps Judy should have spent more time looking for a men's coach and spent less time with her favored women's programs. The "new" coach has still not come close to winnig as many games per season as the "old" coach, not even with the same players.

I cannot wait to play you guys on the field.....and watch your team score more points than our scoreboard can count. We know we will suck, but hey we are in CUSA now suck it.

Nice idiotic comment by a disgruntled App State Teacher's College fan at 5:54, who failed to acknowledge UNCC has surpassed APP in EVERYTHING BUT FOOTBALL. I'm speaking of basketball (UNCC has a Final 4 plus over 10 times the number of post-season appearances as APP), Soccer (2 Final 4s), Golf (3rd and 5th place National Finishes), Baseball, Track and Field, Women's Athletics, and last but definitely not least, ACADEMICS. UNCC has 5 times the number of doctoral programs as App.

By the way, the commuter college comments are off base too. UNCC has more students living on campus than App. App fans think college is nothing but football. How shallow.

Anonymous said...

I'm still confused as to why Appalachian fans thought they should be moving to CUSA. UNCC was one of the originating members of CUSA and always one of the dominating basketball programs back then.

Half the App State fans I know also pull for UNC-Chapel Hill and do not even want to move up because they are afraid of competing with their "other school".

RickyBobby said...

I am a UNC-C student, I live in the dorms now and love it. I used to drive on 485 everyday and get stuck in traffic coming from south Charlotte. UNCC with the new campaign to have less commuter students has offered grants to students to stay on campus. My room and board is half the cost, even though the athletic fee we pay now for football offsets that. My friends however still like living at home and they won't move into the dorms. We are like high school kids still hanging out at local Walmart prking lots and such. Thank God we got football to be proud in our school for the first time!

I attended both schools. I have season football tickets for App and I have season basketball tickets for UNCC.

This is my 2 cents:

Basketball - UNCC is much better, even though they have had a couple of bad years. This is really a no-brainer.

Football - App wins, of course. Another no brainer.

All other sports - UNCC wins. Another no brainer.

Academics - UNCC wins.

School Spirit - App wins, but it is close. App fans travel well for football but nothing else. UNCC fans travel very well for any basketball game or any other sporting event they can drive to in a day.

Beauty of Campus - App wins. UNCC's campus is finally very lovely now but it is hard to beat the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.

CO-EDs - UNCC gets the nod, but barely. Both schools beat any of the ACC schools.

I wish both schools had been invited to CUSA.

"Tim Collie Expand Mrs Rose has not done an adequate job forming relationships with young alumni, of the 100,000 alumni, 99% of them are angry or suffer from UNCC apathy, she has shrunk the numbers over the past few years. Sure there is some excitement of late, but remember football was against her will to begin with. She brings 0.0 charisma to the job and generates little in terms of hype. "

Finally an intelligent comment on the CO front page.

The only problem is there arent 100,000 grads from the UNCC 49ers since 1965 when the NC Legislature approved it as the 4th UNC system school when Rose was still a 10 yr old tomboy misfit in school or so they say.

The 2 yr tiny private Charlotte College Owls who went out of business and shut down in 1960 is NOT the taxpayer publically funded Legislature approved UNCC and never was or never will be.

UNCC sits on 1000 acres of 100% state owned land and 100% state owned buildings only like all 16 UNC system campuss. No exceptions.
The north Mecklenburg campus UNCC 49ers were never named Charlotte College Owls and never an extention either.

BCone failed with her tiny defunct irrelevant Charlotte College Owls and went to Raleigh 100 times and begged on her knees for 5 years for a new UNC public school.

One could make some elementary rudimentary illogical historical only connection but private the 2 yr tiny Charlotte College Owls IS NOT the public UNCC 49ers since 1965.

Its not even apples and oranges but rather a modern nuclear warhead vs a cap pistol.

The private 2 yr Charlotte College Owls graduated at most 200 in its 14 yr Central High history from 1946-1960 before it went bellyup with 10 students. They cannot be counted as UNCC 49ers graduates that stands at roughly 99,800 graduates.

Stop making up the rules as you go. Thats the Every Rose Has Its Thorn way.

Judy Judy Judy ? lol

She grad from Winthrop College Eagles didnt she?

So how can SHE of all people rename UNCC 49ers to Charlotte College Owls (49ers) alone?

Maybe she needs to take her highly developed skills she used to fix the UNC-CH Tarheels and UNCC 49ers "confusion" to Winthrop College Eages?

What about Rock Hill Eagles?

Gotta change that confusing Winthrop sports depart to ROCK HILL BIRDS
(sports only) to avoid the same confusion with those confusing University of South Carolina Gamecock birds, right?

GO ROCK HILL EAGLES !!!!!!!!!!!!
(sports only)

When I was at UNCC as of last year we had little to no college scene. You cannot call hanging out at the mall parking lot or driving to south Charlotte to throw a party at a friends house a college scene. I wish we could be like App in that sense, have you people been to Boone on a Thursday or Friday night? I wish our school wasn't considered a commuter college, but the fact is we are one. I had ten 40 something moms in my last night class, App doesn't have that problem. Do you think these moms are showing up to sporting events?

All of Americas larger urban center universities have 90% commuter ratios who live off campus or at home or work fulltime and go at night.

Smarter more intelligent responsible students in urban environments take advantage to work part-time jobs to make extra cash learning a life lesson on how to be self sufficient and self supportive instead of always sponging off mommy and daddy for everything like little brats.

So, you define an intelligent student as someone who lives in their comfort zone instead of branching out of their home community? You basically described a community college student in your last paragraph. Students who attend community colleges first, and then transfer to universities often are more mature than than the typical college freshmen...partly because many of them paid their own way and worked a job. But, you don't learn much about yourself or other points of view if you stay at home around the same people you've known for years. I know that I got far more out of college by going away to school than I would have if I would have commuted to a nearby school.

However, I did pay my way (student loans) and work during grad school. But, I still didn't go to grad school near my hometown. Education is about learning to think for yourself and teach yourself. That's hard to accomplish if mommy still does your laundry and cooks all of your meals.

Why are the Appy fans still here? I thought we had settled this! Charlotte is a major university and has simply surpassed a much lesser Appy St.

Appy St is a garbage university. Always has been, always will be. It is a place to go if you can not get into any other school and you just cant face that fact that a community college is right for you. I would put it on the same level as NCCU, WCU, and CPCC.

In another post on this very site a user posted an interesting link from the WSJ. In it, you can see that a Charlotte grad will make more than an Appy at all times during his career. The market has spoken Appies....Charlotte Degrees > Appy GED's. I would strongly recommend that you use your degree for something worthwhile. Like cleaning a spill, or lining a bird cage. Its about all you can do with it any how.

Now go worry about your div-II football and be gone from this place!

you mean "major community college".
Again, CC's are valuable in training displaced workers and trades. UNCC has grown in size, but not in academic standards...reality is that UNCC is still the 5th or 6th choice for most entering freshmen. If you don't want to attend CPCC, but can't get accepted to UNC, NCSU, ASU, UNCW or UNCA, go to UNCC.

I am a current UNCC student and I must say I got accepted to UNCC, USC, and ECU. I got denied at UNC, App State and UVA. SO using my own grades, SAT and application value it seems those schools are above the ones I got accepted to at least in academics and popularity. I do know that while I have had fun staying close to home at UNCC I still want to transfer to either UNC or App in order to finish my major at either of those schools. The reason why is because for what I am studying their degrees hold more sway in the career world. I am happy to see football come to UNCC, but walking around campus people are acting like we won something! I really do not understand the arrogance that UNCC fans have been showing over simply going back to a conference that we used to be in. Is it because we want to feel important and not what we are known as anymore?

I got accepted to Clemson, Virginia Tech, and UNCC.

I got my mechanical engineering degree at UNCC and now work for a fortune 200 company. My company is #2 in the nation for engineering firms.

I'd say UNCC has done me well compared to my friends at NC State still looking for jobs.
