3 Charlotte 49ers teams get APR honors

The Charlotte 49ers' men's tennis, women's tennis and men's cross country teams have won NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking among the top 10 percent nationally in their sports in the last multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR).

This is the fourth consecutive year the women's tennis team has been honored, and the second straight year for the men's cross country team. It's the first time since 2004-05 for the men's tennis team.

The 49ers have had at least one team honored in each of the program's seven years.

“At the start of every semester I remind my student-athletes that they all start with a 4.0, but it is up to them to keep it,” said Charlotte cross country coach Ed Schlichter in a statement. “I try to make sure each and every one of my guys get the attention they deserve.  I ask them to take advantage of tutors and when big tests are approaching to let me know if they need me to switch practice times. Another huge part of our success in the class room is our outstanding Athletic Academic Center that gets our student athletes off to a great start by meeting with them and checking up on them weekly their first semester and throughout their academic career.”

--Former Florida International assistant Joanne Aluka-White has joined coach Cara Consuegra's staff on the women's basketball team. Aluka-White replaces Angela Crosby, who left for Florida, where she will be on former 49ers coach Amanda Butler's staff.

-- The 49ers' women's soccer schedule is out. Charlotte opens the season Aug. 18 at College of Charleston and opens at home Aug. 24 against Western Carolina. Home nonconference highlights are Wake Forest (Aug. 26), Clemson (Sept. 9) and Davidson (Sept. 13). The Atlantic 10 schedule starts Sept. 28 at Transamerica Field against Virginia Commonwealth, with the 49ers also playing five consecutive league games on the road at one point. The league tournament is Nov. 1-4 at Rhode Island.

Women's soccer schedule

Aug. 11, UNC Asheville (exhibition); 18, at College of Charleston; 24, Western Carolina; 26, Wake Forest; 31, at UNC Wilmington.

Sept. 2, at East Carolina; 7, North Florida; 9, Clemson; 13, Davidson; 16, at James Madison; 25, Francis Marion; 28, Virginia Commonwealth; 30, Richmond.

Oct. 6, at George Washington; 12, at Fordham; 14, at La Salle; 19, at Massachusetts; 21, at Rhode Island;, 26, Saint Louis, 28, Butler.

Nov. 1-4, Atlantic 10 tournament, Kingston, R.I.

THREE Teams Receive APR Honors. Will this story actually be printed in the Observer, or is it relegated to the blog "For Niners Only"? My guess is it remains for Niners only while the Observer instead publishes a series on what Roy Williams has for breakfast each day.

in other news, Alan Major will obliterate APR graduate rates for hoops

Anonymous said...

Yes, this must be for Niners only because most UNC-chapel hill fans have no idea what the word "obliterate" means.

Reportedly Judy Rose as alumni of The University of South Carolina at Rock Hill or Rock Hill Eagles sucked as a girls basketball player and was dumb as hell so she changed UNCC 49ers to Charlotte
49ers to avoid confusion? ROFLMFAO
Is her IQ at room temp?

The "Ch" factor has been a wad of confusion for ages or has she been living in a cave? Thats why "N.C." is always REQUIRED on the end of Charlotte N.C.

When they passed out brains did she think they said trains and miss hers?

Millions are demanding a return to UNCC 49ers IMMEDIATELY and stop embarrassing the UNC system with such uneducated ignorance.

Otherwise call it Charlotte N.C.
49ers.

Judy Rose also really needs do something to try to fix being such a BIG DUMBAZZ ...

The Charlotte N.C. 49ers? humm ..

It does a nice clarifying ring and no confusing aspects.

Anon 10:27, yes this news is for Niners only. No way the current leadership at the Observer does anything that recognizes the Niner's accomplishments. That is why I cancelled my subscription 3 years ago.

I just want to test something out here...
The sAints are horrible and Cam Newton is a future Hall of Fame QB!

I cancelled mine too. There is no need to read the printed version when the only 49er news they print is in the form of a blog. I am tired of them pimping UNC and their shady athletics department.

I got a bottle of carbonated black sugar water that somebody wants to call Pepsi! Are they to dumb to realize that its Coca Cola????? ROFALMFO!

Millions of idiots demand to change the name of this carbonated black sugar water back to the original Coca Cola!

David Scott should be embarrassed to have his name on this story. Yes, he'll write about 3 UNC-C teams receiving this recognition when he knows but doesn't write about 13 Davidson teams receiving the same NCAA recognition. No fairness in sports news coverage by Scott and Charlotte Observer ... but then that's the way CO does business -- fairness doesn't matter!

@8:48
Davidson students may be very smart, but you are not. This blog is about CHARLOTTE, not Davidson. Additionally, please do not compare a public school to a private institution. Typically the public school will have better athletics and the private school will have better academics. Just for the record, NO local school gets proper coverage from the Observer, whose business is business, not fairness.

Anonymous said...

8:48 got us confused with Crap pill hill. UNC-CH dominates the Observer coverage.
Another reason we should make the CHARLOTTE 49er name more prominent.

Anonymous said...

The statement from the Davidson fan cannot be true because Davidson does not have that many teams. Well, maybe if you count Goose Clubbing, a favorite pasttime of the Davidson students. Will Davidson once again use high school cheerleaders, a high school pep band, and have no graduate programs again next year?

I know for a fact some 49er stories were read more than some UNC-Chapel Hill stories in the Observer, which is one of the reasons the Observer tries to hide stories about UNCC and leave them in the Niner blog. True story. The reason why, I have no idea. It makes more sense to publish those stories about the hometown team and sell more papers.

Anonymous said...

8:48 should grow up, quit acting like a baby, and spend his/her time commenting on the story (intended purpose of "Comments"), and not calling names re: the comments of others. But then again, perhaps he/she has trouble focusing on anything other than the most recent item that traipses through his/her mini-brain...

Agree 100% with 10:27 (first comment) and 10:53 (most recent comment).

Its much more fun for us to make comments in the anonymous blog format. I am so glad nobody screens or filters my comments.

So anonymous can only be trolls? What an idiot. Trolls are smart. They cast their hook line sinker and bait and catch the ignorant gullible dumb sucker fish.

If trolls were so damned smart, they'd be doing something other than trolling. #wastedlives

Do any of you 49er fans or non49er fans have a clue about how to get the Observer publish the score of South Carolina in the College World Series? They played last night but there is nothing from that game listed, only yesterday's afternoon game is listed. It would have been smeared everywhere if it was North Carolina that was playing.

Those of you criticizing the Observer for their overly biased coverage have a valid reason to do so.

The O covers only the Tar Heels, with an infrequent bone thrown to fans of other teams. At least Carolina fans can get coverage of their team in the Columbia paper (The State?) . Charlotte fans take whatever is given and that ain't much. Chapel Hill has done a fine job over the years of hiding the true nature of their athletic program due to their monopoly over the education of journalists, but the ugly truth is getting out there.

Anonymous said...

The ugly truth about UNC may be getting out there but it is not being put out there by the Observer. Other newspapers in the state and even the nation are giving the absurdities in Chapel Hill much more coverage than the Observer. They love to brag on their beloved Tarheels but they hate it when the Heels get caught cheating.

Congrats to the those incredibly tough USC Columbia Gamecocks aka Columbia Gamecocks (sports only using idiot logic)
for defeating Arkansas and now its back to the Finals Baby for a THIRD NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP College World Series at Omaha.

Dont you know Arizona was pulling for the Razorbacks. hahahaha

Nobody wanted to face the 2 time consecutive champ Gamecocks ...
who have the Wildcats totally psyched out BIGTIME shaking in their cleats ... HAHA

GO COCKZ

USC grad here. We have 4 times the number of baseball fans living in the Charlotte area than UNC does. Anyone reading the Observer would never know it. I have lived in 5 major cities and have never seen any paper pimp a team the way the Observer pimps UNC and UNC is located over 100 miles from Charlotte. The UNCC/Charlotte fans have a right to complain. So do USC fans. Columbia is closer to Charlotte than Chapel Hill.

There is only one USA and it is in California! There is a pretend one in SC but nobody cares about that one.

Anonymous said...

darn phone...

There is only one USC and it is in California!

Anonymous said...

Fact: The University of Southern California is NOT playing in the Championship Series.

Fact: The University of South Carolina IS playing in the Championship Series. Those initials look like "USC" to me.

There are 2 "Carolinas" though. The main one is in Columbia and there is also UNC-Chapel Hill (just calling them by their official name).

Anonymous said...

^^^You could not be more wrong. There is University of Soutern Cal (USC). And then there is "I wish I could have gone to the real USC or Carolina. But I was not smart enough to get in. I will just wear this USC T-shirt and hope nobody asks about it"

Just the truth that's all....

Anonymous said...

"USC" is the official abbreviation for the University of South Carolina. Anon 8:57 needs to take a class in remedial spelling. My guess is he/she probably needs to take remidial classes in other subjects too.

Anonymous said...

^^^^^^ remedial (typo the 2nd time)

Anonymous said...

"USC" is the official abbreviation for the 8 schools in the University of South Carolina SYSTEM!

The branch of the school located in Columbia should always and forever be referred to as USC-C or USCC!

Anonymous said...

^^^ I don't care what it abbreviation is. It's not real! By your logic if you went to Horrid Association Realizing Very Awkward Revolting Dummies, you went to H.A.R.V.A.R.D!!!!

On second thought are you sure that is not your alma-mater?

Anonymous said...

Im confused... which is the condom and which is the cock???

Anonymous said...

If you go anywhere outside of North and South Carolina, the abbreviation USC is used only for Univ of Southern California. Noone uses "USC" for the University of South Carolina except Carolina residents. It's mainly a regional thing.

Anonymous said...

I don't have a dog in this hunt but one thing is obviously very clear.

If USC is not the abbreviation for the University of South Carolina, that means that UNC is not the abbreviation for the University of North Carolina, including the branch university in Chapel Hill. If UNC is not the official abbreviation, then that should solidify the name "CHARLOTTE" for the 49ers.

Anonymous said...

Arizona beats the "other USC"

Hopefully all of you other Usc fans will crawl back in your hole.

Anonymous said...

Fuck you weenie boy. Go find a young kid to molest ...

USC
the real one

Anonymous said...

^^^ Really? Over a baseball game? Nice to see what USC is all about. Also if you went to the real USC you don't have a dog in this fight.

To whomever is the webmaster here:

You should be ashamed of yourself. You delete countless pro Charlotte posts. (I know first hand that you deemed it "unfitting" when I posted about the university changing its name from UNCC, to University of Charlotte.) Yet even in the wake of the Sandusky tragedy, someone uses profanity and suggests lewd action be taken against a minor....AND HIS POST STANDS!!!!

You should be ashamed of yourself... I know I am.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/andy_staples/06/26/presidents-approve-four-team-playoff/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

D1A college football finally gets a Final Four playoff.

How long with it take UNCC49ers to make that football Final Four?

The NCAA better fix itself and clean up D1A football in the process and remove the academically unqualified and those pay for play pimp cheats.

Sports writer filth who promote athletes being paid for playing in college need to all be arrested and jailed.

To fix that prob just perm ban all athletic scholarships and require 1200 on the newer 3 part SAT entrance exam for all athletes and 2.0 GPA.

I would rather have the comment section shut down than have these idiot trolls running rampant spewing this profane nonsensical garbage!

But of course David wants to stir the pot and up his hit count to win points and stay on board his sinking ship. Why are you still writing anyway? You must be like 90 yo. Shouldnt you retire sometime?

Anonymous said...

Agree with 11:10 AM and the terrible damage the NFL Panthers new QB did to taint Charlotte with his criminal laden shenanigans.
Makes certain UNC Charlotte stays away from the likes of his ilk and coach Lambert recruits only the highest quality academically qualified athletes to get the new program off the ground to a proper start with integrity. Get rid of any bogus athletic crip easy majors such as the Tarheels were called out on by the NCAA.
Keep it all clean honest and dirt free and closely screen all recruits. Never compromise high standards.

Go UNC Charlotte Fortyniners

Anonymous said...

Have no fear. If the 49ers even look like they may cheat like UNC-chapel hill, the Observer will do a 10 page special on why UNCC should drop all sports and all Niners should become tarheel fans. For every article the Observer buried about tarheel cheating, they will double it if it gives them a chance to make the Niners look bad.

49er #1

Has UNCC ever offered a H&PE major? Since you turtles finally got peewee football you better develop a H&PE major since UNC is scrubbing AA and women studies via NC Legis to get the NCAA off its back. Nomore free lunch easy dumb and dumber for fems or athes.

UNCC only 200 yrs behind the rest of the planet so what else is is new?

Must be sucky to claim that hole but all confs need a whip boy to rip up and run up stats. C-USA got their guinea pig for the next century.

There's only one ASU and it's in Arizona. Let's start this inane argument all over again. It was SO much fun the first time around
Actually, I like App St. I even rode on their train with Fred Kirby when I was six years old.

Anonymous said...

It's funny that the ASU fan mentioned their infamous "Health and PE" Major. That is what every App student that had trouble getting into other schools winds up majoring in. At App, the crip majors are not just for athletes, they are for the regular students too.

Note to the App fan: Thanks for reading our blog. I have no doubt you follow Niner sports. We have FIVE FINAL FOURs in Major D1 Athletics (1 in basketball, 2 in soccer, and 2 in golf). Perhaps when App decides to actually compete in something other than SMALL COLLEGE football, they may finally get an invitation to compete in post season playoffs. Perhaps App will look into PHD Programs one day too. Being a major university is about stuff other than SMALL COLLEGE football.
