Charlotte 49ers news, notes

Charlotte 49ers news and notes:

-- The men’s basketball game against Florida State at Time Warner Cable Arena will likely be played Dec. 22. There are still a few other non-conference scheduling issues to be worked out:

Because of scheduling conflicts, Charlotte won’t host Oregon State until the 2013-14 season (a return game from 2010-11).

The 49ers will make a pre-Christmas trip to Miami and Kennesaw State, but those dates are still being finalized (will probably be in the Dec. 14-16 range).

The 49ers still don’t have their season opener set. They want that to be a home game.

So, here’s what we know about the non-conference opponents (the Atlantic 10 schedule begins Jan. 9): Texas State in the Great Alaska Shootout opener, Nov. 22-24 (the field also includes Oral Roberts, Tulane, UC Riverside, Alaska-Anchorage, Belmont, Loyola Marymount). Charlotte and Texas State are in the same bracket as Oral Roberts and Loyola Marymount.
Home games against Florida State (Time Warner Cable Arena), Dec. 22, East Carolina, Central Michigan, Lamar and Radford. Away games versus Davidson, Kennesaw State and Miami. There is no return game for last season’s game with East Tennessee State.

Also, Charlotte will play three exhibitions in the Bahamas in August (the team’s freshmen will be allowed to play) ...49ers senior center Chris Braswell will participate in a big man’s camp in Chicago later this month sponsored by Nike. The camp is run by the New York Knicks’ Amar’e Stoudemire ... Although most of the 49ers are in summer school’s first session, they will all be enrolled in the  second session. They’re also taking advantage of a new NCAA rule that allows coaches to work with players for two hours per week over the summer.

-- Here are the women’s basketball conference matchups. It’s a 14-game conference season, with each team having single-game matchups with seven home games and seven away games, while not facing one opponent (Dayton, in Charlotte’s case):

Home: Butler, Duquesne, Fordham, George Washington, Temple, Virginia Commonwealth and Xavier. Away: La Salle, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s and Saint Louis.

-- Men’s soccer defender Aaron Weldon will be back with the team when the 49ers began practice in August. Weldon, who tore ligaments in his right knee in the College Cup semifinals against Creighton in December, has just been cleared to run.

-- Charlotte senior catcher Miguel Rodriguez was taken in the 36th round of Wednesday’s Major League Baseball draft by the Boston Red Sox. Rodriguez, the first 49ers' player drafted since 2010, was the 1,111th player chosen.

Incoming freshman Matt Creech, a shortstop from Colquitt County (Ga.) High, was taken in the 35th round by the Atlanta Braves.

David I'd be interested to hear more about the new soccer coach, they made that move pretty quickly without much fanfare. Hopefully he can keep the momentum going

Come on, lets not be so negative. There is always hope in next year.

Seriously though, I'm excited about this years team, I think one more round of recruits will flush out certain talent. Man up Braswell!

Ahhh yes Bruce the troll. Did Charlotte reject you?

Just sayin.

No BB wins until 2014. That new conference should provide a few. It’s just awful. Fire Rose and Major Who too.

Hey erveryone. Go look at NNN where NA made a big deal about Braz attending a big man camp after reading it in the O. Me thinks he and some of the O's staff are still pretty "tight".

My question for David is why does UNC-chapel hill always get all the free promos while all Niner news is relegated to a blog for Niners only?

Anonymous said...

Ummmm b/c the O hates Charlotte and wants people to only think of the ACC schools? Duh...

I love that soon the ACC will become irrelevant in college football and the O wont say anything about it.

ACC and BE things of the past.

Quite a few comments have been removed, but the ones removed have been the ones from the 49er fans defending the 49ers. Why were they removed and why were the cheap shots from the elementary school kid allowed to remain? Has the sports editor been browsing this blog again?

Serious discussion...looks to be AGAIN a 200+rpi non conf sced. Why? And Judy cheap shots Lutz when she fired him that the the OOC gave him easy wins, watch the vid. This athletic dept is rotten. Scary thing is with cusa/football on horizon, its the time to be relevant in THIS market, but write it in stone, Judy/Dubois arent fit to raise funds or generate hype to tap the potential. Alot of lesser known schools have risen up the past decade, but we hang our hat on one yr wonder soccer and a few golf seasons. Sigh....

I saw on the National News where UNC is being investigated again. his time it is for creating gake classes with fake professors for their athletes. I see nothing about it in the Observer. WHY?

Now that I have pointed out the Observer bias, I am expecting to see an immediate response of "UNCC UNCC", etc. That is usually what happens.

Anonymous said...

Anon 10:59, a hundred bucks says the Observer will not publish as much about the new UNC-Chapel Hill Investigation as they did about the UNC-Chapel Hill baseball team during the ACC Tournament.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the O seems biased. However, they HAVE published a story on the fake classes at UNC-Chapel Hill. That's how I found out about them. In the internet age, does it really matter if one newspaper chooses to sweep under the rug the sins of it's sports editor's alma mater?

Anonymous said...

The story about the fake classes in Chapel Hill stayed on the Observer's web page for less than 2 hours. At this very moment they have 4 stories on their web pages about UNC athletics that are designed to make locals think UNC is the only team they should like. They posted the stories about the latest scandel because they had to but they took them down as soon as they could. I have always wondered if the editors of the Observer get some kind of "bonus" for promoting UNC athletics like they do.
