Charlotte 49ers' Mayfield out of exhibition

49ers junior guard DeMario Mayfield will miss Charlotte's exhibition Nov. 1 against Pfeiffer at Halton Arena with a high right-ankle sprain.

Mayfield sustained the injury in practice last week.

Mayfield, perhaps the team's most versatile player, averaged 11.2 points and 7.0 rebounds last season.

Any idea when he will be able to play?

Better question: When does football season start?

Another question. There is yet another development on the academic scandals at UNC-Chapel Hill and stories appeared in the Raleigh paper, USA Today, and other places a couple days ago. Let me guess. The Observer pulled the story again and did not print it. WHY? The Observer would be better off making or selling makeup ("COVER UP") than it is at reporting actual news stories.

Anon 11:48, the Observer only prints negative stories about the school in chapel hill when it is forced to to do so by their parent company. That policy makes no sense when you consider their main objective is to sell papers. Ironically, they never hesitate to smear any other school's reputation any time they get the chance.

i'm a 49er fan who wishes ya'll would give the whole "observer favors Chapel Hill' theme a rest or at least, bring it up less frequently. Anyone who hasn't figured out the CHARLOTTE observer's bias is so idiotic they will never be convinced and our constant comments of the subject seem like whining. We aren't going to convince the mouth breathing sports editor to give fair coverage to his precious alma mater.

"mouth breaking sports editor"?

Anon943, breaking news for you. It is not just us that complain. State fans and USC fans and others complain too. I assume you don't want the Observer covering all the cheating and fraud taking place in Chapel Hill. Why not? Are you a closet heel fan?

Learn to read. "Mouth BREATHING". It's a euphemism (look up the word) for a stupid person Your assumption that I don't want coverage of the Chapel Hill follies is incorrect. I'd love to have honest local coverage for a change, but it isn't going to happen with a Chapel Hill grad as sports editor. It also isn't going to change by our complaints in this blog. How about if we inform people in person in a matter-of-fact and friendly manner every chance we get? Do you think that might get better results? I do.
Most people, including and especially Chapel Hill grads, are disgusted by the goings-on in UNC-Chapel Hill's athletic dept. That is, most people who aren't mouth breathers.

^^^^ Carolina fan or complete moron. Maybe both. Do you really think spreading the news by word of mouth works better than publishing something in the local paper? How stupid is that? I guess you qualify for your own definitition of "mouth breathing".

State grad here and you Niners definitely have reason to complain. We do too. The Observer finally published another story on the scandals but it is not the one they had omitted a few days ago. The new story is much less accusational than the story published in the Raleigh paper a few days ago.

The Observer can't claim this latest omission is because UNC is not a local school. You can't read the paper without seeing 5 or 6 new stories a day on the fictional greatness of UNC.

By the way. The idea to spread this news by word of mouth is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of. No one will believe this story unless they see it in or on the news.

Did I say word of mouth is better than the Observer giving us fair coverage? No, I did not, What I said was that us complaining constantly will not make the O shape up. Hey, if bitching and moaning in the blog makes you feel better than talking to actual people, then feel free. You will be wasting your time.
Exactly what part of "I'd love to have honest local coverage" did you not understand?
Exactly what part of my saying that any smart person if disgusted by Chapel Hill athletics leads you to believe I am a moron Tar Hole fan?
Let me say this in a form you will understand. The Observer sports coverage is rotten, has always been rotten, and will continue to be rotten. It is geared toward people who root for Carolina and always have rooted for Carolina and know no other way but to root for Carolina. These are people who never change, never think, and can not see the parallel between learning not to soil one's pants and learning that Chapel Hill's streets are not paved with gold.
We will not change these people's minds and we will not change the Observer's rotten biased coverage. There are , however, some other people who are open to learning that there is something right here in Charlotte more worthy of their support than the corrupt athletic dept. over there in Orange County. These are the people I will speak to whenever possible. If that makes me a stupid moron, so be it.

I think talking to people is VERY stupid. We should remain silent and just complain a lot to the Observer. This has been effective in the past, as they now devote just as much coverage to Charlotte as Chapel Hill, Oh, wait....

Can we get Alan Major to sit out the season?

No article anout the nationally ranked 49ers soccer win over nationally ranked St Louis. Thisa win puts the Niners in a tie for first in the A10, a league having 5 teams currently ranked in the Top 25.

BTW, telling people by word of mouth about the cheating going on in chapel hill will only make those people look at us and shake their heads. The HAVE to officially see it in print or they will not believe us.

Anonymous said...

8:15, you sound like a bad fan. Don't you know Major will takeus to the Final 4 next year. If you don't believe me just go on Niner Nation and they will tell you.

@5:07
The observer does not control the print world. Point out to people that there is now an internet where they can go to access national stories, as this story surely is everywhere except in the land of the O. Many of the people who shake their head and do not believe are the same ones who would not believe if they saw it in the Observer, anyway.
You aren't going to change closed minds, with or without the local rag. Anyway, it is more important to me that Charlotte athletics never stoops to Chapel Hill's level of sleeze than pointing out the sins of the Tar Holes, as fun as that may be.

Observer website had "coverage" of the St Louis win by the 49ers. It was cut and paste from Charlotte49ers.com.

I like the idea of the "UNCC fan(?)" that the Niners should spread the word by telling others. Let's do this. All Niners call 5 people they know and tell them the Observer is biased toward Chapel Hill, tell them cheating is taking place in Chapel Hill, and tell them the Observer often refuses to acknowledge UNCC successes. Then tell those folks to call 5 people they know and tell them the same thing. Talk about being laughed at. No, of course that won't work. I sourt of doubt the "UNCC fan"(?) suggesting calling everyone is a true Niner fan. He probably works for the Observer and wishes Niner fans would all disappear so everyone in Charlotte would bow down to "his" Tarheels.

Hey. moron, the original poster did not propose word of mouth as some grand scheme. Of course "cold calling" would not work. Seems to be a common tactic in this blog to set up straw men to tear down.
If you can "convert" one person you actually have some contact with from being a die-hard Tar hole fan by talking to them honestly, that is one more than you will by pointing out in this blog the Observer's failings. Of course, that would require you to actually DO something, as opposed to pissing and moaning. Stop enjoying tilting at windmills.
Get this through that thick head: Media coverage is more effective than word of mouth, but word of mouth is more effective than nothing. Media coverage is not sensitive to what is said in this blog.
IF you are serious, then do some research and complain to the CEO of the Observer's parent company, but do it a way that makes him realize his sports editor here is hurting his newspaper. Hell, maybe we can't get Mikey fired and that would be a good thing.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 11:33, how do you know media coverage is not sensitive to what is said in this blog? You must either in management at the Observer or you are speculating or trying to act like someone you are not.

Anonymous said...

^^^
Empirical evidence, my friend. Yes, I am speculating that their future behavior will match their past behavior. That is, that our whining will result in them ignoring it. Are you speculating that they will change?

We lost to Wake Forest. Its going to be a looooooooong season.

Without our 2 best players (Braz or Mayfield).

Great. High ankle sprains take 2 months to heal. At least we'll get him back in time for A-10 play.

Anon 8:26 PM - the first football game is in 306 days.

Speaking of football, where are all the UNC-Greenville trolls? Trying to figure out how they lost to Navy, I guess.

@10:15
It was a preseason scrimmage. Try not to hyperventilate about it, sokool.

Anonymous said...

Regarding basketball stinking and the Observer coverage, one thing is definitely true. They give us better coverage when we stink than when we are good. I guess we can thank Major for getting us better coverage. Gone are the days when a NCAA bound top 50 rpi Niner team defeating a top 20 ranked team either has no print or is relegated to page 9.

Anonymous said...

Hey Dave - Why dont you do some real reporting and tell us why Braz didnt play??????????

More academic issues??

Anonymous said...

If thats the case it would be the first time Majors has gotten tough with academic issues.

Anonymous said...

IF Braswell was held out, the most obvious reason would be to avoid reinjury during a meaningless scrimmage. Hey, don't let that hold anyone back from an opportunity to bash Major. Just because he has many REAL problems doesn't mean we can't make up a few more imaginary ones.
