Basketball, football transfer news

-- Freshman forward Darion Clark is transferring from Charlotte, a source close to Clark has confirmed to the Observer.

Clark was a significant contributor for the 49ers for most of last season, averaging 17.6 minutes, starting 18 games and averaging 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. His playing time started to decrease late in the season, however. In the Atlantic 10 tournament, he played just two minutes in a victory against Richmond and five in the quarterfinals against Saint Louis.

Clark seemed to acknowledge his decision on his Twitter account Tuesday, saying there will be a lot he will miss about Charlotte, but a lot that he won't.

-- In football news, slotback Jaquil Capel has left the program and is apparently transferring to Appalachian State. Capel, who originally committed to Appalachian before switching to Charlotte, said on his Twitter account that he will play for the Mountaineers. An Appalachian source said the paperwork to get Capel into school isn't complete yet, however.

Capel, out of West Montgomery High, was one of the 49ers' first significant signings. He scored four touchdowns in the East-West All-Star game in Greensboro in 2012.

Ironically, Jerry Moore -- the former Mountaineers coach who pursued Capel at Appalachian before he changed his mind -- attended a 49ers practice last week and spoke to the team. Capel had already left the team by then, however.

curious to know what the real story is with 49ers basketball team...Mayfield dismissed, Clark transfering after good contribution during the season, then limited playing time when needed....AM odd comments in postgame show (referencing some pro game with critical 49er game ahead)...what's the real story?

Clark wasnt going to get any PT next year with all the talent Major has coming in.

7;35 pm ... bahahahah, that was awesome !

Lets see: Major looses best player (Spears) first year. Major looses best returning perimeter scorer and 3yr D1 starter (Briscoe) end of second year.Major looses best player (Mayfield) middle of 3 year. Major looses his 2nd best returning post player (Clark) end of 3 year. This program is really going in the right direction under Alan Major downhill ... LOL what a joke.

How long will Charlotte fans have to suffer the embarrassment of an AM led basketball program. Get this clown out of here. Judy Rose you should be ashamed of yourself !!!!

I am really worried about next year now. I was already worried about lack of depth but this adds fuel to the fire.

So now we know being short on quality players will be next year's excuse.

Darion was a cancer. Must have picked it up from Brazwell. Damn it Lutz!

And, so it goes. Alan Mid Major loses another player. I thought he was a player's coach. He was at Ohio State because he had no life. he was the pee-on assistant and that's why he should have never been hired to lead a program.

One more transfer coming. Better not let anyone play summer ball for injury

The consistent internal problems--year after year-- with the basketball program are systemic. The University hired a coach with no previous head coaching experience, which reflects poor administrative decisions (Rose/Dubois). You get what you pay for. Charlotte's athletic cruise ship is about to drop anchor in C-USA, the conference of left overs, no-name schools. Any school of consequence got out while the getting was good. The basketball team may have a chance to be competitive in such a weak conference, but who cares. Don't expect strong attendance ($$)

49er fans touted Darion Clark last yr as the next Charles Barkley coming off his ESPN highligh reels. When this kid had 17 at Dayton, national writers were tweeting what a beast he is. Now that he is leaving, the 10 or so 49er basketball fans look the other way like no bid deal. ITS A VERY BIG DEAL.

Major and his assistants consistently lose and mismanage their best players (Spears, Briscoe,Braz,Clark, ect) and then proceed to recruit other teams worst players (Sullivan,Cherry). The Charlotte coaching staff is proving to be more and more incompetent by the decision.Easy to see why no one has signed thus far. Why would anyone want to play for them?

My thought is Major has realized he is not cut out to be a head coach. Its just not for him. He may have already had talks with Judy and said that, when his contract is up, he will just walk away and go back to being an assistant at Ohio State.

Anyway we can get Bobby back??? Please!?! Maybe if they name the court after him??
And maybe he can bring Tyler Lewis with him too??? *fingers-crossed*

Proof this program is DOA? 16 comments. 110,000 alum, 25,000 students, city of 2,000,000.

What else can you say ????? Fans refuse to show up for games...even students, but until people hit the school in the pocketbook and stop donating money, we're gonna get the same kinda BS from the administration and put up with a half ass run basketball program. Didn't like the Major hire when it happened and REALLY don't like it now. 2 words...B Y R O N D I N K I N S !

But our women's program has continued to do better. I give Judy credit for staying with it to make sure we always have a qualified coach.

Women's hoops???? Nobody gives a damn. Doesn't bring one ounce of pub or recognition. Oh but wait...soccer? Bowl games and NCAA hoops brings natl respect. TV. Eyeballs. That's all that matters big picture.

Were you guys at the games this year. Alan Major did a much, much better job this year. The Atlantic 10 was much more competitive than in years past and UNCC went to the NIT.

The players leaving were all trouble. Spears was a pampered athlete who quit at BC and then quit on UNCC. Mayfield was kicked off because he couldnt quit smoking pot.

Alan Major has the team heading in a much better direction and the wins will increase dramatically next year in a much weaker Conference USA.

Were you at the games Charlotte/Major got humiliated (20pt losses 4 in a row) 3 by teams that were not even good enough to make the A-10 tourney. These coming in the latter part of the season when Major's teams should be getting better they were getting worse. CMON man if Charlotte had not of watered down its schedule with 13 200+RPI wins they would have struggled to win 13 games. This team was just as bad as they have ever been, stop fooling yourself.

Repeating the same crap we've heard ten million times. Might accidentally be right, but don't know jack.

We do not have the necessary depth for next season. We were already short on players before Darion announced he was transferring. We have still signed no new players. We don't even have any major possibilities (no pun intended). If another player decides to transfer, we are up the creek. Now someone tell me again how much better off we are.

Maybe we can pad the schedule with some D2 teams to help our record next year. Playing all those 300+ rpi teams seemed to work this year. Better play D2 teams next year to compensate for having fewer players next year.

^^^^^
Did we just hire Jeff Lebo?

Anonymous said...

Rather have Lebo. While Charlotte was sitting at home with no postreason, ECU was on Sportscenter Top 10 3 times in 1 week, 2 of which were the top play, and won their postseason tournament. Crappy tournament or not, Lebo and ECU are going in a much better direction then Charlotte.

Has the E Vic transfer been confirmed?? This would be a disaster! We need E Vic next year!
