Denzel Ingram transferring from Charlotte 49ers

Sophomore guard Denzel Ingram is leaving the Charlotte 49ers basketball program and will transfer, the school announced Saturday.

Ingram, who started 10 games last season, averaged 8.1 points and was third in Conference USA in 3-point shooting percentage (44.1 percent).

Ingram would have had to find time in a crowded 49ers backcourt next season, with starting point guard Pierria Henry returning along with shooting guards Terrence Williams, Shawn Lester and Ivan Benkovic. Florida transfer Braxton Ogbueze is a likely starter, and he will be joined by freshmen guards Keyshawn Woods and Torin Dorn, both of whom figure to push for playing time.

Ingram, an all-state player at Chapel Hill High, played in all 28 games last season and scored a career-high 20 points against Georgia Tech.

“We would like to thank Denzel for all his efforts and contributions to our program,” coach Alan Major said. “We want to wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The decision by this player to transfer represents yet one more indicator of the negatives with the mens basketball coaching program/staff and the lack of direction turmoil in the UNCC mens basketball program. Perhaps the most telling public evidence was the recent refusal by Judy Rose to comment upon the future of their coach -- the one that she herself chose when she fired the much better immediate-preceding UNCC mens basketball coach. Bottom-line: Yes, this player is transfer; but the underlying problem is systemic -- Rose's abysmal and arrogant judgment on athletics. It won't get better until there is a full house-cleaning in their athletics program, starting first and foremost with the most serious source of their problems -- namely, Judy Rose.

It has nothing to do with coaching - more that everyone player thinks they can play 30 plus minutes a game. He was not going to play much so decided to move on - wish him well but happens all over country with transfers.

WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!!!!

Expect more to come before May.

To say it has nothing to do with the coach is either a moronic, Juvenal, or misleading statement as could be made. They don't pay Coach K at Duke seven millions dollars a year for nothing.

What have we lost in the past couple years ??? A crybaby in Clark, a marginal player at best in E Vic, a criminal in Mayfield and now a streaky shooter at best that was a defensive liability. Denzel will profit at a smaller school and we can use the scholarship for a greater need. With two good 2 guards coming n next year, this move will benefit both sides. I like Denzel and wish him the best.......hopefully the coaching staff won't screw up the use on the open scholarship !
But......I'm just gonna "Live in the real world" like Judy !

@8:46

Do you're saying Ingram would get more playing
time at Duke under Coach K and therefore would
not transfer? Speaking of morons.

to Anon 8:46: I don't undersand what you are talking about. Coach K loses players almost every year and he may even lose Jabari Parker. Players come to Charlotte hoping to get a lot of time. However, they don't always realize that they have to compete with other players for spots and minutes. They also do not realize that if they are having a bad night, someone may have to come in and play their spot as oppose to them coninuing to mess up the game. I have not heard anything about Tyler Lewis, but if he comes to Charlotte I lot of people will be changing their minds about Rose and Major.

Major is a major hack and a terrible coach. I have a hard time watching Niners play with that moron on the bench. He doesn't teach fundamentals and has no game time skills. A computer would be a better game-coach than Coach Minor, er Major.

The "real world" you and Judy describe: we are 22-42 in conf since Major arrived, our attendance was worst in Halton history. There were many coach changes this March who were given 4 yrs to implement change. Truth is, our world is mediocre or less is the bar. Thats too bad, used to not be as such.

All you have to do is listen to Kevin Ollie for 2 min, and it becomes obvious we dont have a leader.

Gene,
I agree whole hearted ! The "Real World" quote is from Judy at the last coaches show. I'm living there like all other fans because she makes the decisions and we're forced to live there. Truth is we have about 4-5,000 dedicated fans. Its been that way since 1975 when I started attending 49er games. As we start winning, the marginal fans start to show up. Unless we get back to a winning program, we'll stay at that mark. Lutz had started to get us back there, but conflict within the athletic department caused him to lose his focus and eventually cost him his position. Judy brought in an unproven coach and so far it has NOT worked out. I'd be happy if they gave Ryan Odom the job and let Major be his assistant. If he's ever going to learn to coach and run a program or not....no one knows.....but if he doesn't turn it around next year (our battle cry!) and she doesn't make a move....she should be removed ! If you're gonna hire an in-experienced head coach at least hire one with a personality !
* 49er forever! *

To Jeff @ 8:00am Re: What have we lost the last couple years ???

If you dont remember we have lost about 5000 fans, as well as losses to CoC, UTSA, Davidson, Rice,...etc.

To Anon 6:04AM-if no one cares then why are you posting. Obviously people do care or they would not be giving their opinions here.

UNC Charlotte needs a new AD. The basketball program is in shambles with the lowest attendance since Halton opened and the baseball team has trouble beating anyone--maybe Vance HS?

The problem with the basketball program is obvious to any outsider. It is a losing proposition, morally and financially. Any business organization would fire the CEO with results that have been unacceptable for a long time. People are showing their disapproval with their pocket books. How long can the Chancellor afford to prop up a losing program. After 22 years of Judy Rose--make a change!

Would having more local talent along with winning help bring attendance up? We all know that the attendance is not just the student that are at the school. A lot of it is alumni and locals hoping to support the city (Charlotte) college team. I know that one thing is we are about to find out because they have a big push for local talent for UNCC.

Shawn Lester - Mooresville
Williams - West Meck
Braxton - Charlotte
Bernard - Charlotte
Woods - Charlotte
Dorin - Charlotte

And if I missed something forgive. I'm just a local guy who goes to the games. UNCC is a pretty campus with nice facilities. Not Grad though.

can we please get a full time beat writer. There are e reasons I look at the observer 1. Niners 2. Panthers. That's it. My number 1 is beyond disappointing with updates.

Nothing to do with not liking the coach, he knew the coach was leaving for medical issues and wanted to move on.
