Spring game rosters, info

Here's a look at the rosters for Saturday's Green-White spring football game. The game begins at 1 p.m., with gates opening at 11:30 a.m. More than 11,000 tickets have been distributed for the game in the 15,300-seat stadium. Tickets are $10 and available on the 49ers' website.

 

Green offense

Quarterback Matt Johnson, running backs Alan Barnwell and Damarrell Alexander, receivers Mikel Hunter, Austin Duke, Jamel Ross and Will Thomas, H-backs C.J. Crawford and Justin Bolus, linemen Mason Sledge, Thomas La Bianca, Daniel Book, Casey Perry and Jamal Covington.

 

Green defense

Line: Devin Clegg, Larry Ogunjobi, and James Middleton; linebackers: Nico Alcalde, Terry Caldwell, Micah Bryan and Rick LeGrant; secondary:  Tank Norman, Greg Cunningham, Desmond Cooper, and Daquan Lucas. Alex Petzke and Ardy Holmes will also play on the white team.

 

White offense

Quarterbacks Lee McNeil (who will also play on the green team) and Patrick O'Brien.  Running backs Quintin Gay and Donjore Gainey; receivers Corey Nesmith, E.J. Rhinehart, Luke Sonricker and Darius Smalls; H-backs Elijah Roberson, Peter Fields and Jason Eury.  Linemen Kyle Hoffman, Joe Wolljung, Jared Barr, Zach Thomas, Zach Bumgarner, Thomas Frazier, Cameron Curlings and Cody Brown.  Zach Thomas and Nesmith will also play for the Green.

 

White defense

Line: Payton Thompson, Hayden Beck, Fletcher O'Neill and Kyle Taylor; linebackers: Jalen Holt, Brandon Rodriguez and Mark Pettit and Kendal Parker (also for Green), Zeb Little, Tyler DeStefani and Robert Williams. Secondary: Jordan Abrams, Cortezz Nixon, Petzke, Holmes, Sam Dexter, Danny Leonardi and DaQuavius Reid. 

 

Here's what Charlotte says the parking situation is (lots open at 9 a.m.):

 

Game-day parking requires a parking permit. Those without a permit will be directed to Cone Deck (enter via main entrance) for cash purchase parking.

FSL account holders who have already paid the parking fee and made their annual giving contribution to the Athletic Foundation received a parking permit for the spring game. That permit is to the same lot that the FSL holder will use during the 2013 season (new permits will be mailed in August). It is important to review directions on the back of the permit to see the specific campus entry route assigned for that lot. Not all entrances are available to fans. Most entrances will allow only fans with the proper parking permit.

Any fan without an FSL parking permit can purchase a permit online at https://uncc.

Game Day Purchase:

Fans arriving on campus without a parking permit will be directed to the Cone Deck via the

main entrance for the $10 cash parking purchase. Parking permits for the tailgating (surface) lots are not available to anyone who is not an FSL account holder.

Students:

With the exception of Lot 25, student resident lots will not be affected by football. Resident permits will be required in any resident lot. Resident students will be required to remove their vehicles from Lot 25 to North Deck on Friday evening. The designated student tailgate lots are lots 5, 5A and 6.

 

 

 

Basketball, football transfer news

-- Freshman forward Darion Clark is transferring from Charlotte, a source close to Clark has confirmed to the Observer.

Clark was a significant contributor for the 49ers for most of last season, averaging 17.6 minutes, starting 18 games and averaging 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. His playing time started to decrease late in the season, however. In the Atlantic 10 tournament, he played just two minutes in a victory against Richmond and five in the quarterfinals against Saint Louis.

Clark seemed to acknowledge his decision on his Twitter account Tuesday, saying there will be a lot he will miss about Charlotte, but a lot that he won't.

-- In football news, slotback Jaquil Capel has left the program and is apparently transferring to Appalachian State. Capel, who originally committed to Appalachian before switching to Charlotte, said on his Twitter account that he will play for the Mountaineers. An Appalachian source said the paperwork to get Capel into school isn't complete yet, however.

Capel, out of West Montgomery High, was one of the 49ers' first significant signings. He scored four touchdowns in the East-West All-Star game in Greensboro in 2012.

Ironically, Jerry Moore -- the former Mountaineers coach who pursued Capel at Appalachian before he changed his mind -- attended a 49ers practice last week and spoke to the team. Capel had already left the team by then, however.

Transfers eyeing Charlotte 49ers

The Charlotte 49ers, who have yet to sign any high school players for next basketball season, might be on the verge of landing at least one transfer.

Ben Cherry, a 6-2 shooting guard who averaged 4.4 points last season at Tulane, told the Observer on Monday that he's interested in transferring to Charlotte. A source close to the 49ers program acknowledged that the interest is mutual.

Cherry, who will graduate from Tulane in May, would be eligible to play next season, with one year of eligibility remaining as a graduate student at Charlotte.

Cherry could bring the 49ers a much-needed outside shooting threat. He made 50 percent (34-of-68) of his 3-pointers last season for the Green Wave.

Cherry is from Charlotte and played his high school ball at Myers Park. He originally went to The Citadel, where he played 20 games as a freshmen in 2009-10. He followed coach Ed Conroy to Tulane the following season, but tore his ACL 10 games into his sophomore year, getting a medical redshirt. He played 20 games as a junior, averaging 2.1 points and making 34.5 percent of his 3-pointers.

Charlotte isn't Cherry's only possibility: he's visiting Gardner-Webb this weekend.

Another player from the Charlotte area might also be interested in the 49ers.

Forward Bernard Sullivan, a former Davidson Day star, is also considering Charlotte after announcing he would transfer from Clemson in March, a source close to Sullivan told the Observer.

The 6-7, 215-pound Sullivan played in 56 games in two seasons at Clemson, averaging 1.6 points and 1.2 rebounds last season. He probably would have to sit out next season due to NCAA rules.

Landing transfers is nothing new to 49ers coach Alan Major, but he hasn't had a whole lot of luck with them. Guard DeMario Mayfield came from Georgia in 2010-11, but was kicked off the team last season for breaking athletic department rules after leading the team in scoring. Forward J.T. Thompson transferred from Virginia Tech, but was lost for the season with a knee injury in January.

The only other new incoming player the 49ers have now for next season is 6-3 guard Shawn Lester, who signed last year but was ruled academically ineligible. Lester, from Mooresville High, is attending Charlotte this year. He is expected to provide extra offensive punch next season to a team that loses leading scorer Chris Braswell.
 

49ers beat UNC in soccer exhibition

The Charlotte 49ers edged North Carolina 1-0 on Saturday in a spring-season friendly at Greensboro's Macpherson Stadium.

The game was part of the Greensboro United Soccer Association's ACC Hall of Champions Showcase at Bryan Park.

The 49ers scored midway through the first half when midfielder Will Mayhew tapped in a rebound after a shot by defender Charles Perez was saved by North Carolina's goalkeeper. The 49ers had chances to increase the lead in the second half. Defensively, Charlotte didn't allow the Tar Heels a shot on target.

The game was a rematch of sorts of the 2011 NCAA College Cup final, in which North Carolina beat Charlotte 1-0.

Charlotte hasn't allowed a goal in the three spring games it has played against college competition, tying South Carolina 0-0 and beating Virginia Tech 2-0 on two goals by Giuseppe Gentile.

The 49ers conclude their spring season at Wofford on Thursday (7 p.m.).
