49ers face tough schedule next year

The Charlotte 49ers' 2007-08 men's basketball schedule continues to shape up and it could be one of the toughest the 49ers have faced in quite some time.

The latest addition is an away game in mid- to late-December next season at Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. Charlotte defeated the Pride in the 49ers' season opener this year at Halton Arena.

Hofstra (22-10) advanced to the National Invitation Tournament this season, where they lost to DePaul in the opening round. It was the Pride's third consecutive appearance in the tournament.

Charlotte opens the 2007-08 season Nov. 9 against High Point in Halton Arena, then play in an eight-team tournament that includes Winthrop, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Charlotte will also play a home game next season against Southern Illinois, which spent most of this season nationally ranked.

Also: Junior college star Lamont Mack made an official weekend visit to Charlotte. Although no commitment has been made, sources say his visit went extremely well. -- Jim Utter

Thanks for the info Jim! Sounds like the game at Hofstra will be during Christmas break.

I'm pretty sure that Charlotte had a Strength-of-Schedule that was ranked around #6 in the country about 1998 or 1999. Next year's schedule may be even ranked higher - judging by the opponents' W-L records.

John Chaney must be spending his retirement corrupting our shedule-makers.

Jim--

Good news about another game with Hofstra. Charlotte violinmaker John Sipe once studied the art of bow-making at Hofstra, so the 49ers had better not go fiddling around too much when they take on the Pride.

And how about that high-profile field in the tournament in the Virgin Islands? The Niners can make a good go of it against the likes of Georgia Tech and Notre Dame. Just so they don't have to go up against Winthrop!

As much as I would love to say that this is a tough schedule. It just doesn't lok liek it is. Other than the tournament in the Virgin Islands and the game against Southern Illinois, this schedule just doesn't seem to tough. Maybe for a team of Charlottes caliber it is and not saying they are a bad team, they are getting there act together but this schedule just does not impress me. Hey you never know, that's is why youplay the game.
