There has been some sentiment -- OK, maybe by me -- that a great way for Charlotte to open its first-ever football season in 2013 would be against Mecklenburg County rival Davidson.
That's not going to happen. The Wildcats' '13 schedule has already been finalized and the 49ers aren't on it. So unless Davidson pulls a Tennessee (which recently begged out of a contract with North Carolina) with somebody, we'll have to wait a while longer for a 49ers-Wildcats game.
Davidson athletics director Jim Murphy said Tuesday that Charlotte hasn't contacted him about scheduling a football game. Charlotte AD Judy Rose won't comment on who she's trying to schedule but has said she wants the first game -- which will likely be Aug. 31, 2013-- to be at home.
Said Murphy, whose FCS football program doesn't have scholarships: "We'd be interested in the near-term, but based on the number of scholarships they're going to give, not in the long-term."
Morehead State is still the only opponent the 49ers have announced. Expect news of more games to be released pretty soon, though.
Here's a list of first-season schedules for FCS teams that have recently started programs. Remember, at least half Charlotte's schedule must include Division I teams (doesn't matter if they're FBS or FCS):

Nice work David
Nice and much appreciated. Thanks!
I hope we can get Davidson on the schedule early on - it would seem like a great first home game, so too bad that can't happen. We'll have to make sure we sign a contract with money involved so they don't back out though.
any middle school in CMS would beat Davidson
it would be fun calling it the Geese Bowl
Appreciate the coverage David, but I could NOT care any less about playing little Davidson....
Anonymous, your ignorance amazes me. I applaud the 49ers for starting their football program and I wish you success. It would be fun for us to play before you get up to 60+ football scholarships. However, I would like to clarify a few things. Davidson has been playing Division I or 1-AA (FCS) football since 1897. Although we are currently "non-scholarship" (mainly due to Title IX), we have a respectable history of college football. Little Davidson won the SoCon in 1969 and played in the Tangerine Bowl, we have produced numerous NFL players and coaches, and from 1999-2001 we had the longest winning streak (18) in the entire NCAA. Davidson football was mentioned on Sportscenter and even had a Powerade radio and print ad. Although we have struggled recently, the quality of the "lowly" non-scholarship Pioneer Football League is steadily improving and our conference currently has several players on NFL rosters. So, laugh all you want at Davidson football, but I assure you that it is delusional for 49ers fans to believe that they will immediately contend with full-scholarship FBS schools. I assure Anonymous that if he strapped on some pads and ran into a Davidson linebacker, that the violence incurred would exceed that of a CMS Middle School game.
Anonymous must not have been able to get accepted at Davidson. Many in the Charlotte area do not realize the quality level of football played there and the great atmosphere for home games. Plus, they have some great local kids playing this year. TE from North Meck, RG from Christian, LT from Weddington, DT from Morganton (all former Observer all-something players) will all start on Saturday night against Georgetown. Instead of making stupid comments, go up to see some good college football and have a good time Saturday night.
It's no knock on Davidson Football that Charlotte fans think we'd win so easily. It's simply the fact that even a startup FCS scholarship program would 9 out of 10 times beat a non-scholarship program. There's just an entirely different set of talent that a program can get with an athletic scholarship than without. The difference between scholarship FCS and non-scholarship FCS is almost as wide as the one between BCS and FCS.
WOW Adam, that is imoressive......after reading that I must now say I could STILL not care any less about playing little Davidson in football (or any other sport for that matter). After all, Charlotte punks Davidson 3/4 of the time in the sports we play already.
this blog very helpful to everyone,I like so much
Interesting fact that, Davidson athletics director Jim Murphy said Tuesday that Charlotte hasn't contacted him about scheduling a football, is good to read, and the post is great too.
