A view from the outside

-- East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo had an interesting take on the 49ers after his team's 62-61 victory against Charlotte on Wednesday:

"They're a program that -- if you take the ACC out of (it) -- has been very consistent. They win 20 games. They're the talk of the state outside the ACC," said Lebo. "(Beating them) gives us some respect."

If that means the 49ers have a target on their backs when they play other in-state rivals (non-ACC, if following Lebo's point), new Charlotte coach Alan Major hasn't noticed it yet. Charlotte has already played Carolinas teams including Gardner-Webb, S.C. State, Coastal Carolina and East Carolina twice. Charlotte also used to be in Conference USA with East Carolina.

"Maybe I  I haven't been here long enough," said Major "Some of that may be because of last season (when Charlotte won 19 games), but a lot probably goes back to days of being in the same conference. A lot of times rivalries spill over when you're not in the same league anymore. So you can see how that sentiment could still be there, because it sounds like there were some pretty good games in the past between both schools.

"A lot of schools you recruit against too. So when you win one of those battles, it can give you something to talk about when you're recruiting."

-- Both teams took good care of the ball Wednesday. Charlotte had just six turnovers and East Carolina had seven.

-- Although Charlotte had just four players on the bench because of Shamari Spears suspension, injuries and eligibility issues, the 49ers' subs still outscored East Carolina's 25-22. Center Phil Jones had 14 points and guard Gokhan Sirin added 11. Sirin's 3 pointer gave the 49ers what were nearly their winning points with 14.1 seconds left.

-- Sirin played 21 minutes, which allowed the starting backcourt of Jamar Briscoe and Derrio Green to get some rest. Briscoe and Green were both averaging 37 minutes entering the game, but played 32 and 33 minutes, respectively, against the Pirates. Briscoe played an excellent floor game (six assists, no turnovers), but was just three-of-13 shooting.

A loss is still a loss and right now the 49ers have TOO many losses. This season is shaping up as the season that turns the program around and starts putting the Niners back in the real hunt. Let's hope Majors can find the winning algorithm SOON.

Excuses. Excuses. This team won 19 games. They had Spears. They still have Braz, Deuce, Derrio, Anjuan and Phil. They have no depth becasue Major's crew opted not to recruit anyone for this year. The one kid he did sign for this year is ineligible. The kid who transferred might be a player next year. He could have signed depth.

Why waste scholarships on players you only have 1 week to recruit?

He was hired too late to land any recruits for the 10-11 season.

Enough with the 19 wins, if it was so impressive why did it get a coach fired???

We are rebuilding, how hard is it to digest...

We should NOT be rebuilding.

Why should we not, a coach was fired for under-performing and under-recruiting. A new coach had 1 week to recruit for this season and is installing a new system.

Do you not get sports in general?

My problem is that Major was given the same contract with the same amount of money as Lutz. I expect the same amount of wins!
If Judy knew we would be rebuilding, we could have rebuilt at $300k/year and not $500k!
Total mismanagement from the AD.

It is incentive based, just like Bobby's contract. He is not getting $500k this season.

I highly doubt that Major's contract is not what the market is bearing at this point in time.

If a coach is fired for performance, the new coach's job is to rebuild. The fact that Bobby's recruiting was so bad over the past couple seasons on top of the fact that Major's system is a complete change in philosophy made it easy for anyone with common sense to realize the transition was going to be rough, but long term it is for the best.

***maybe a dumb question*** What is Major's system? It feels like we don't have one. I openly admit to not making any road games, just all the home ones.

Lebo is right about the underdog residual effect. His challenge is to make basketball a viable sport after football, baseball, and women's sports after last decade's miserable performances. Terry Holland has tried to get a program going at ECU but the 49ers are finding out how it is starting all over again with a newbie. ECU has tried with experienced coaches and found it difficult to get the chemistry. Wait until football rolls around 49ers. A week between games leaves a lot of time to whine.

Anytime you have a new coach with old players there is growing pains. Lutz recruited based on a guard heavy style. From what I've read it is my understanding that Major is a big man guy. A guard that Lutz looked for may have different attributes than a Major recruited guard. Major did not have any time to recruit for 2010, so this season is understandable. They have done a good job recruiting for 2011, and I see promise for 2012. It will take AT LEAST 3 years for Major's recruits to have an impact. I think the Major hire will turn out to be good, but I think people have to re-evaluate their expectations for this year. If you need an example look at the seasons that the Tar Heels had when Roy was hired, and they were bringing in 5 star recruits.

it takes "new" coaches 3 years to rebuild 5-25 type programs, not programs that have won 19 and 20 twice in past three yrs.

Major needs to show he can coach and give Niners hope now, but the 3 yr plan is unacceptable

Major was did NOT find a 'bare cupboard' This season should not be a written off already as a'rebuilding yr' for the Niners. Major needs to find a way to get it done this season.

I couldn't agree more. If you have players that caan win 10-20 games one season and they are stinking it up they next that is showing a lack of an ability to coach. A good coach must be able to recognize the ability of his players and adapt his game plan to take advantage of those abilities.

It is clear that the comments are coming from people who have no ability to analyze a situation.

Alan Major is not shaping up to be a good coach and Charlotte shouldn't be in rebuild mode. Most of the players are upperclassman and Charlotte has no business being 3-5. A 37.5% winning percentage is a joke no matter if your rebuilding or not. Some of you optimist need to look at Charlotte's history in basketball. The only coach that has worse winning percentage than Alan Major 37.5% is Hal Wissel 26.2%. Every Charlotte Coach's winning percentage is higher than 37.5%. He won't last 2 years if his winning percentage don't improve.

He has coached 8 friggin games. If his winning % is in the 30s over 2 seasons then yes he didn't get the job done, captain obvious.

This is a rebuilding job because the system is a complete 180 from the old regime. The roster does not fit the system being implemented, and you can see this being addressed already by his recruiting (6'4" guards instead of 5"10" guards).

It was clear the Lutz's system would not work in the A10, especially with his inability to get the same level of recruit he used to land. The program is going in a different direction basketball philosophy wise, and it is going to take time to install the new philosophy for the good of the program.

I don't understand why this is so hard to comprehend.

Its obvious that Alan Major can recruit, but can he coach? Just because a coach can recruit doesn't mean he has the ability to coach a team into winning season. Lutz had trouble recruiting but got the most out of his players. Will Major get the most of these players, we shall see.
