Lamar observations (from afar)

I wasn't at the 49ers' 72-54 at Lamar on Saturday, but here are a few observations from afar:

-- If there were any doubts how important Chris Braswell is to this team, they should be erased. Braswell, the 49ers' leading scorer and rebounder, missed the game with flu-like symptoms. Without him, the 49ers' thin front court was exposed. Lamar outrebounded Charlotte by a staggering 52-28. Osas Ebomwonyi, a 6-11 center, blocked six 49ers shots. The 49ers, incidentally, had no blocked shots.

Braswell isn't a physical force underneath, but he knows his way around the basket. Not saying the 49ers would have won with him in there -- there were obvious problems elsewhere -- but no way does Charlotte get pushed around like it did with Braswell in there.

-- The closest thing Charlotte has to a pure shooter is Javarris Barnett. So if he's off (he was one-for-six) and if Braswell isn't there, points are going to be hard to come by. The 49ers were 32.8 percent from the floor (they actually shot better from 3-point range at 36.4 percent).

-- Derrio Green is a good example of that. Green was five-of-nine from 3-point range, but missed all seven of his other shots. Green, incidentally, passed Byron Dinkins for 11th on Charlotte's all-time 3-point list on Saturday.

-- Coach Alan Major said on his post-game radio interview that Barnett (hip) and K.J. Sherrill (knee) are being bothered by minor injuries. Sherrill still has some soreness in his knee, which he injured in the preseason a year ago.

-- Deuce Briscoe has fallen to a distant third on the point-guard depth chart. He played five minutes Saturday, behind freshman starter Pierria Henry (27 minutes) and Luka Voncina (21).

-- Next up is a home game Tuesday against East Tennessee State and then three straight on the road (Wright State, East Carolina and Radford).

Lamar?? Seriuosly, UNCc sucks bad. And if you are a reporter and not at the game, Why report? THe entire UNCc program is a mess. Major sucks, campus sucks, reporting on UNCc sucks, Judy Rose sucks, President Dubois sucks, get rid of em all.....

The rest of the athletic department sucks as well. Blow it up and start over.

The above "anonymous" poster obviously doesn't know squat about UNC Charlotte, its Bball Coach, its athletic dept., or anything else for that matter - - - obviously was rejected by the University and had to go somewhere like ECU, UNC Chapel Hole, UNC Pembroke.......what a putz

This is so embarrassing...

Obviously you don't know much about UNCC either if you think somebody who got denied from there could get into Chapel Hill. ECU is harder to get into than UNCC. UNCC might be a half step above Pembroke, but that's it.

Niner dorks are so delusional. Is the face paint you use lead based?

actually ECU's acceptance rate is 74% and Charlotte's is 71% both of which are kind of embarrassing. That said...look it up, with the exception of men's basketball, Charlotte athletics have destroyed with A-10 since joining the conference in 2005

So, non-revenue sports? Awesome.

NCC lost to some guy named Lamar? Anaon @ 11:23 is right - campus sucks - make it a CPCC campus and let the UNC system put the $ into something more useful in Charlotte.

To all the anonymous posters - thanks for taking the time to ready the Gold Mine blog and supporting coverage of Charlotte 49ers athletics. We appreciate it.

UNCC is to North Carolina as Lamar is to Texas. It's a fairly large public school that people usually end up at when they don't get into any of the larger state schools (UNC, NCSU, Texas, Texas A&M). Lamar's best sport is also golf, and they have recently reinstated football.

If an anonymous detractor with nothing better to do posts a hate filled negative comment about UNC Charlotte and no one cares, is he still an a-hole?

Anonymous said...

So if you do NOT go to UNCc, you're uneducated? Yeah, that sounds about right.

To all of the negative people out there this evening. UNC-Charlotte bring in over $500 million a year to North Carolina's economy so it means a lot to the state. It has also created more businesses than any other college in the state so again it means a lot to the state's economy. As far as non-revenue sports are concerned. All sports program bring in money or the school would not have them. There are some sports that are more popular than others but they all bring in money to the school. As far as the campus sucking the campus is pretty good (Over 25,000 students can attest to this, and several athletes from various states such as New York, Georgia, Maryland, New York, California, Virginia, South Carolina, and various other states can agree. And to all of those other people who hate the university; "Who cares what you think. Some of us are pretty proud of the university and we thinkt that it is great (Non-Sucky to you). Oh, and one last thing, there have been students who have been rejected by Charlotte that have gotten into Chapel Hill and Wake Forest (just thought that you should know).

@7:33
As a graduate of UNC Charlotte, I'm glad you are proud of our school, as you should be. However, not all sports make money at Charlotte or anywhere else for that matter. They are paid for by voluntary contributions from people like me and not-so-voluntary student fees. The non revenue sports have a value that will never be understood by some of the idiots who post here.

You are an idiot. On behalf of all alumnus of UNC Charlotte, I apologize for this ignoramus.

To Anon 7:59. I can tell that you are not an alumni of UNC-Charlotte or else you would not have written that comment. To Anon 7:44, whether through voluntary donations or through student paid fees the sports program still bring in money ( All income regardless of the source is counted as income). The basketball programs and football programs at the top ranked programs receive more in donations than student fees. The point that I am trying to make is that these programs do earn money and if this was not so then they would not be around. The wrestling program at UNC-Greensboro was canclled recently because it was not bringing in any money to support the program. There were many people who showed up in an attempt to get the program back but at the end of the day it all came down to money. There was not enough financial support for the program. And by the way, I am an alumni of UNC-Charlotte, as well as, UNC-Greensboro.

All these proud alums are right. UNCC is great for a lot of things. It's a great way to meet new people from Gastonia, for instance. It also is a great way to gauge how our community college system is doing, since 65% of your classmates will have an AA from CPCC. And evidently, it's a great place to develop thin skin and a Napoleon complex.

You trolls have no idea! The University of Charlotte is a big time program and no matter how much we lose, we will never get the respect we deserve! Niner Nation is awesome! Yeaaaaaaah! Face paint for everyone! Quick everyone! Get in line six hours before the game! We want to make sure we get the first row opposed to waiting till tip off and sitting in the fifth row! We are the real fans! Yeaaaaah! Face paint!

Losers.

To Anon 12:11AM-I like your comment and though that it was very nice. However, I disgree with your last statement. There is a difference between having thin skin and a Napoleon Complex, and having pride in your college. I am very proud of my school and I will stand up for it just like you have interests that you like and will stand up for.
