49ers advance to College Cup

STORRS, Conn. -- The Charlotte 49ers advanced to the College Cup for a second time in school history, getting past Connecticut on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie.

Charlotte will play in this week's national finals in Hoover, Ala.

Charlotte trailed 1-0 late in the game until freshman Giuseppe Gentile's equalizing goal with three minutes left.

After a scoreless overtime, Charlotte made four of its five penalty kicks, with senior Charles Rodriguez making the clinching one.

The Charlotte (16-4-3) will play the winner of today's Creighton-South Florida in the semifinals Friday.

Was the statement about running into Carolina made in jest? The 2 teams played a practice exhibition match before the season officilly began and the game ended in a 1-1 tie before being called with a few minutes remaining for bad weather.

Charlotte has improved since then. Carolina has not.

@9:54
Chapel Hill scored twice in the preseason game. I haven't seen them play since then, but I'd be very surprised if they haven't improved. Anyway, I think they have UCLA and we have Creighton, which aren't exactly a couple of cupcakes. Go Niners!

Awesome game! Go 49'ers

If any of you expect us to walk over Creighton, you are crazy. It will be just as challenging as Akron and UConn, both skilled teams with great technique and speed. Focus on that one and forget Sunday until Sunday gets here. If it does!

Found UNCC in Final Four mens soccer more or less buried in side stories. How about a freaking headline, once, Charlotte Observer? Observer coverage of Charlotte 49er sports is horrid. Virtually non-existent. Pitiful. Go Niners. Beat Creighton.

UNC 49ers finally have a sport worthy of the UNC label. You can ditch that weird cookie cutter sports only label anytime now and change the colors to green and blue to correct past mistakes.

earth green & sky blue University of North Carolina 49ers

our poor chancellor, who is he going to root for? this must be killing him!

UNC is laughing as they begin engraving their name into the trophy. UNCc has no chance. It was a cute story while it lasted, but it's over.

^ Yo,dimwit. I hope they are. Here's a news flash for your sorry self: UNC is playing UCLA.

Give it a rest. You are coming across like a hysterical teen aged girl. Thanks for you concern., though, because we really, really give a rat's behind about your opinion.

@9 07
If you had the courage (which you don't) to call one of our players "cute" to his face, he would laugh at you and proceed to engrave the outline of his foot in a spot other than a trophy. Chapel Hill's players and coaches are not laughing at anyone in Hoover because , unlike you, they are not stupid buffoons.

5:31.....wth do you mean by a "bigger school"? Charlotte IS a big school and if you mean big name, please explain to me why UNC-Chapel Hill's soccer coach quit the Tar Holes last season and took the job at Creighton.....is Creighton a "bigger school" than UNC-Chapel Hill?

Now that's what I call a rational and well organized comment. BTW, don't forget your sunglasses out there in left field.
