Observations from Xavier

Observations from Charlotte's 74-70 loss Saturday against Xavier:

-- The loss, the 49ers' fifth straight in the Atlantic 10, plunged Charlotte (10-10, 2-5) into the Atlantic 10's danger zone. They're tied for 12th with Fordham and just one game ahead of last place Rhode Island, which won its first league game Saturday with an upset at Dayton.

-- Freshman Terrence Williams started for a second straight game ahead of Derrio Green at shooting guard. Why? Defense. With point guard Pierria Henry still out with an injured knee, the 49ers backcourt is small and limited defensively (remember last season?) with Deuce Briscoe and Green back there. Williams, at 6-4, is longer than Green (6-2) and helped limit Xavier guards Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons to a combined eight-of-26 night.

-- Javarris Barnett's 27 points were a career high and he made seven of eight 3-pointers. The school record is 10 made 3s, by Brendan Plavich against Syracuse in 2003. But the 87.5 percent is a school record for a player who took at least eight 3s (Plavich made 7 of 9 (77.8 percent) twice -- against Louisiana-Lafayette and Davidson in 2004)

-- Don't be surprised to see Henry back either at La Salle or Fordham next week. Major said that, although Henry isn't practicing yet, he's been improving quickly.

-- Small forward DeMario Mayfield (13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, one steal) had a good all-around game. How good? Mayfield, who entered the game a 44.0 percent free-throw shooter, made six-of-eight against Xavier. Musketeers coach Chris Mack said his team turned Mayfield "into Mark Price." Price is the NBA's career free-throw leader.

A much better performance than the other night against Temple. Can't wait to get Henry back the offence runs smoother and his defense is top shelf. Need more production from the guards who only accounted for 10 points in 68 minutes of playing time while shooting a meager 21%. Balance of team shot 47%.

FIRE judy.

Was our RPI (or RIP) ever this low under Lutz? It really looked like Wisselball. Players standing around wanting a 3-pointer. This team has no character. Fire Judy and it looks like Major needs to go. What is Mullins up to these days? Time to rebuild, again.

10 seconds left, down 3, with possession of the basketball?

Better make sure our athlete is in the lineup for his . . . uh . . . defense?

Losing seasons since 1986:

1986 (Mullins) 8-20 (RPI: n/a)

2003 (Lutz) 13-16 (RPI #94)
2007 (Lutz) 14-16 (RPI #146)
2009 (Lutz) 11-20 (RPI #209)

2011 (Major) 10-20 (RPI #217)
2012 (Major) ? ? ? (RPI #134)

11:56 - Obviously the person who scouted the Temple game did not scout the Xavier game. I like the way Henry play defense also but he has not proven himself to be able to run the offense well enough to win against quality opponents. Last year we beat Tenessee, Georgia Tech and Xavier with Briscoe and Green. We only have one quality win (Davidson) with Henry running the offense.

All of you should seriously GET THE FUCK OUT. We don't need fans like you in Halton. Just leave and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Oh, oh, you fired Bobby Lutz! Oh, oh, Judy Rose is a bad AD. Oh, poor me, I have to watch losing basketball! Boohoo.

Just stop going to games, stop "suppoerting" the program, and stop having me toleratel all your stupid asses.

We have a watchable team with a smart offense that isn't just a bunch of guys shooting 3s, we have the best group of recruits in 15 years, and we're ncaa bound once we cycle out the juniors and seniors. We finally have LEADERS and noone's happy. SUCK IT UP OR GTFO!

Good effort by the Niners.
Great spirited crowd.
Team still lacks mental toughness to win consistently.
X will beat you by 15 in Cincy with or without Henry.

Your best player is a 5th year senior, JB... He scored 27. When he "recycles" out what you going to have then??

Anonymous said...

Uh, I love JB but he is NOT generally our best player. Although he was vs. Xavier. If he could play like that all the time....wow.

The Xavier radio announcers described Charlotte's offense as a "bunch of individual gunners" early in the first half. Until it started getting scary close in the second half, XU radio was pretty critical on the offense they saw.

you wannabe fans want respect? you want the local paper (in acc country) to express interest and cover your school? WIN. oh but when we were good 10 years ago or when we got to the final four 40 years ago... SHUT UP. you guys are pathetic. your school will always be a last option for fuck ups around the state and the dumb fucks around the piedmont area that are going to end up back on the farm or working for their daddys construction company. oh but we have winning teams in all the other sports... SHUT UP. nobody gives a fuck about olympic (non revenue for you uncc morons) sports. stop with the jealousy and bitterness towards the acc schools. they are better than you in sports and school. they will have better jobs and better lives, and will always look down on you.

have a great day!

Major is clueless !
Nickerson shoulda been redshirted until next year and never stepped on the floor. He's a turnover machine.
Barz has improved his paint game, but stand around and watches if he doesn't have the ball. THeres so much room for improvement its ridiculous !

BRAZ !

We were in the last game because one player had the game of his life. And we still lost! A successful program has to have a coach that can recruit, teach, coach, and develop a strategy.

I think Major is a nice guy, but in over his head in the four listed areas. I think he would make a great assistant for numerous programs.

Judy at best should be placed over the Olympic sports.

Thank you for your superb input. Your clear demonstration of critical thinking and superior literary skills is much appreciated. Clearly, you are a genius! Was that your brother who posted one minute after you? Surely, anyone with your keen intellect would not post twice to pose as two people.

I just love how anonymous blog-posting experts can decree a last and final decision on a college coach's ability in 1.5 seasons. Consider a few things: it is very rare that we have a "1 and done" player; we're on the next level down, with guys who you know are going to play college ball 4 years. Knowing that roster composition, exactly how can you declare a coach a failure in less than 2 seasons? Shouldn't a coach in that type of program get a 4-year pass, until the roster is completely composed of his recruits who have been completely trained in his coaching style? Get back to me after the 2013-14 season. If the team still sucks at that time, we'll talk.

As for the AD, she has hired 2 hoops men's coaches who took the team to the NCAA tournament, a soccer coach that took the team to the national championship, a baseball coach who has made multiple NCAA tournament appearances, several golf coaches who have made NCAA tournament appearances, and a football coach that is building a brand-new program, and so far appears to be doing it well and smartly. She has had more successful hires than failures. It's OK to question her philosophy (I can't figure out why once Lutz was fired, she had already made up in her mind that the next coach was going to be an assistant getting his first job), but at least we can give it time to pan out. If it turns out that Major can't bring the team back, and Lambert turns out to be a dolt, then you probably have justification for going after a new AD. But Major and Lambert - and Rose, given the number of successful hires she has made - need to be given the proper amount of time.

"Blah, Blah, Blah. Get a clue"
Very intelligent and well reasoned

12:56 poster------guarantee this guy never went to college anywhere (judging from that post there is a good chance he didn't spend much time in high school either) but he probably watches "his Heels every game" and when they win he says "Yee Haw WE kicked your a$$".....What a freakin' dumb a$$!

This basketball program needs an overhaul. A new conference and a new coach. This coach is not living up to expectations. At least Bobby Lutz would have this team winning near 20 when bouncing off a bad year. This guy doesn't look like going to be even close to that this year. I don't see any improvement from last year. He has the secod worst winning percentage of coaches from Charlotte 20-51 next to Hal Wissell.

Judy Rose has been in charge now going on 3 decades. The program is irrelevant. There is no ambition, creativity, charisma from admin, and just an overall feeling of despair.

Judy should resign effective immediately.

Seriously,
Phil Dubois, Alan Major, and Judy Rose...I wouldn't hire any of them to run a high school program but they have the keys to a 25000 student U.
