Conference news could come soon for Charlotte 49ers

The Charlotte 49ers’ inevitable move to a Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly NCAA Division I-A) conference is picking up steam.

A person with  knowledge of the situation told the Observer that UNC Charlotte Chancellor Phil Dubois informed the school’s Board of Trustees in a closed session on Thursday that a decision can be expected “soon” on where the 49ers – who will begin playing  in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) in 2013 – will land.

That new league could well be the 49ers’ old stomping ground: Conference USA.  Charlotte athletics director Judy Rose confirmed  that CUSA (where Charlotte played from 1995-2005)  has contacted Charlotte about membership. The Sun Belt has also done the same, although that league recently added Georgia State.

“We’ve got a lot of options,” Rose said. “But we’re not there yet.”

Conference USA – which is losing Memphis, Houston, Southern Methodist and Central Florida – is expected to announce later this spring or early summer that it has formed an alliance with the Mountain West.

A newspaper in Huntington, W.Va., (home of CUSA member Marshall) reported earlier this week that the 49ers could be the new league’s top choice when it expands.

That makes sense. The new league would be heavily tilted to the midwest and west and could use more schools from the east. Charlotte (and its TV market) would help balance things geographically with current CUSA members East Carolina, Alabama-Birmingham and Marshall.

If an invitation  comes soon from an FBS league, Charlotte would not be able to join in football until 2015 at the earliest. The 49ers have to play at least two years in FCS until they can move up. They also have to average at least 15,000 in attendance for two seasons to be considered by FBS.

Charlotte’s stated goal when the football startup was announced was to eventually move to FBS. That’s been accelerated by the ever-changing landscape in FBS conference expansion. But Rose also said that after failing to find an FCS conference to play in, being an independent (Charlotte will be the country’s only FCS independent in 2013) was not sustainable.

“That is not a good model for us,” she said.

Is the Charlotte tv market really what CUSA wants. I would imagine there are a lot more ECU fans than UNCC fans in Charlotte.

Go Niners! Charlotte University (aka UNCC) will be a bottom feeder in football, basketball, baseball, etc. regardless of what conference accepts them. Good luck in football! However, look at the bright side...the basketball team had a better record than the Boobcats. Bawhahahahahah!!!

It goes to show, that the FBS is ALL about the tv market,& NOTHING about football.

This would be GREAT@! Rivals such as ECU, UAB and Marshall WOULD BE 100 TIMES BETTER THAN THE A10. We absolutley have to jump on this - in all sports - ASAP. I wonder if we can move everything but football now?

Anonymous said...

If CUSA takes the University of Chapel Hill at Charlotte, it is only out of the illusion of media market. USC, UNC, NCSU, App St, and ECU all have more fans in the city. No one is going to care about UNCC's crappy football just like they don't care about UNCC's crappy basketball.

I wouldn't be surprised if CUSA invited Charlotte though. These low end FBS conferences are blinded, trying imitate the media market trends of the big leagues. Charlotte will be a doormat in CUSA just like they're a doormat in the A-10. After a couple of huge losses to FCS teams, there won't be but 7 fans in the stands to watch the train wreck.

Sending the tennis team to Texas should really help athletic funding too!

Anonymous said...

Sure, more ECU and Ap fans around here than 49ers.......yeah right.

Anonymous said...

To the person who said something about "more ECU fans than Charlotte fans" - dude are you an idiot? UNCC has almost 25,000 students! Don't get me wrong - ECU is a good school with great alum and fans but you clearly know nothing about UNCC. If our teams were good then you would be shocked at all the alum coming out of the woodwork to pull for them. But - since they are terrible at Basketball most of the fans are quiet. UNCC got more support for soccer than UNC did - check it out - and if the basketball team was decent Halton would be sold out. Same will be true for football.

Time for your shift at Wal-mart

A school that offers no college experience what-so-ever will never have that many true fans, regardless of enrollment. UNCC's graduate:fan ratio of pathetic. A start up team will have to weather some rough seasons at first. There is no way UNCC's transient "fanbase" will stick around long enough to make a difference. App and ECU have more fans in Charlotte than UNCC and this will always be true.

My shift at Wal-Mart starts in 10 minutes, but just wanted to say...GO NINERS! I actually graduated from UNCC, and this is the only job offer I could get...I must be bad at interviews...Oh well! Go NINERS!!

these trolls are hilariously frightened.

UNCC has alot of students, but 75% of them could care less about the school when it comes to sports, as that 75% has another favorite team from a "Power" conference school from the ACC/SEC/Big Ten/Big East/Big 12/Pac 12, etc.

Anonymous said...

To you losers who likely never went to college anyway - go visit UNCC sometime and then ask yourself why they might end up back in CUSA. Facilities are great, campus is growing (already >25K) and academics are better than ECU or App State. Sorry - facts are facts. The only thing that has held UNCC down for years is the lack of a football team. Once they have that established they will rival UNC and NCSU for State supremacy. Not ECU or App State. Those two have gone as far as they can go.... Sorry - facts are facts. Again – good schools and I love them both but UNCC will soon be the largest school in the state and the facilities are incredible.

Anonymous said...

The A10 is a great B-Ball conference, but CUSA is a much better fit for all of Charlotte's sports. I fully expect it to be a rough and ugly transition to FBS in 2015, but all of our other sports will be immediately competitive in CUSA. If this works out, our AD and Chancellor deserve tremendous respect.

Really? Do some research about the programs and where they rank in the US. Look - I am not trying to bash App State. I love the school - but the people who come on here and bash UNCC have no clue what they are talking about and what i really want is for those clowns to do some research before they talk smack.

MyDixieWrecked said...

You are fooling yourself if you don't think Charlotte has the support to make this happen. I am as much of a critic of our fan base and alums as anyone, but we brought 8,000 fans to a soccer game in Alabama last year. 8,000 to a soccer game is unheard of among non-BCS schools. ASU and ECU have great fans, and there is absolutely room for all of us.

Anonymous said...

Anon 3:30pm...UNCC may end of being the largest university in the state some day, but please don't compare UNCC to either UNC or NCSU. No comparsion from either an academics or sports standpoint. Both UNC and NC State are on a much different level than UNCC.

Not talking smack, just correcting a fallacy. While UNCC has much more post-undergrad opportunities than App State, the admission standards of Appalachian are much higher. Therefore, the statement that UNCC has better academics than App is false.

Both fine institutions. Best of luck to you all on the grid iron. I hope App/ECU/UNCC will all be in a conference together very soon. It will give all three schools a fighting chance to compete with the big boys in Raleigh and Chapel Hill.

Anonymous said...

If there was demand to watch UNCC games from fans, they would show them locally. They don't.

It's not worth arguing if UNCC, App State, or ECU is a better school. None of them are very good. Sure, they all have a good program or two, but none of them are a top 100 school in the country, and probably not even top 200.

Anonymous said...

Anon 3:52pm...you are 100% correct! When major conference see those teams on the schedule, they chalk that up as a win. UNCC/ASU/ECU...consider them the mid-majors of North Carolina...Bawhahaha

I hope Appalachian, Charlotte and ECU are working together, and that they all get into the same league. Which school is better? Which school is better suited? Who cares. ASU draws 30,000 fans to regular season games, with 8,000 of those settling to sit on a wet, grassy hill 50 yards away from the goal line. Charlotte has potential out the wazoo. Appalachian doesn't need Charlotte to prove its success, and Charlotte apparently doesn't need App to get to FBS. However, the best chance for any of the three schools to gain a big chunk of the football interests in this state will be for all three to work together. Sell a market of 10,000,000 NC residents, not three different ones.

To those hater posters who are spewing venom at App State: We routinely rank in the top 10 of US News & World Reports Best Schools. We beat Michigan, albeit back in 2007 and we have 3 straight champs, so don't call us a push-over (Adam Sandler). For those who are afraid of App State in the FBS, don't worry; Upper Echelon in Boone will realize a jump to FBS is not in the best interest for the Mountaineers.

I graduated from App and went 1 year to UNCC for grad school. ASU is definitely better, hands down.

CUSA would be awesome for football and baseball but awful for basketball. Especially with the A-10 primed to add VCU, Butler, and George Mason.

I would rather just go Sun Belt (or CUSA)for football only then join CUSA all sports with it's horrid basketball league.

I know we haven't been good in basketball the last few years but I would rather suck in one of the top conference then suck in a terrible one.

We'd all rather take football only to one of those conferences I'm sure, but no FBS conference is going to offer our program a football only invite.

Lets be honest with ourselvesour school is a commuter college for people who didn't want the real college experience or couldn't. Why would we care about sports, we just want the degree so we can move on. So what if I still live in my mom's basement in Concord. (about five minutes from class!) The student fees we are paying for this stuff is what is driving me crazy, I just want to go to class I don't care what a 49er is.....

Here's a question for everybody puffing their chest out over how strong both UNCC and App are academically. What do these two schools have in common with regards to academics? They are both worse than Queens.

Anonymous said...

Queens? delusional at best. Coming from someone who has worked with kids entering college, and knows kids who have gone to all colleges in the state...sorry, but, yes, ASU is better academically and has tougher admissions than UNCC, ECU, and Queens (not even in the conversation). UNC and maybe NCSU have tougher admissions, but ASU is better than State in many areas academically. As far as admissions go, UNCW and UNCA are tougher than UNCC for acceptance. Charlotte is a commuter school that is decent for engineering and architecture (if you can't get into NCSU, VT, GT, Clemson, etc.) basically a big community college. My brother is a grad and he even says so. Now, back to talking football...

Anonymous said...

UNCC's Engineering Program is right up there with State's. Anyone in the field will agree with that. No way App is tougher to get into that UNCC....I personally know people who barely cracked 800 on the SAT's that got into App. This was a few years back but a fact.

Anonymous said...

Anyone making these "commuter achool/community college" claims about UNC Charlotte are clueless. You clearly have not set foot on the campus in decades. As for academics, ASU is SLIGHTLY tougher to get in (statistically) but Charlotte actually ranks higher in virtually every other measure including salaries for grads and nationally ranked degree programs. Anyone can look this up. It is also considered a "National/Tier 1 University" by the Carnegie group, ASU is not on either count.

Anonymous said...

Proud graduate of Charlotte and this is potentially great news for our Football program! Looking forward to creating a rivalry with ECU and Marshall and tailgating with all of Niner Nation! As far as debating academic/admission standards among all the other in-state schools...I could care less. Charlotte provided my wife and I a wonderful education and a great college environment! Charlotte was a tremendous school when we were there 16 years ago and continues to get better. The future is bright for Charlotte and I can't wait for 2013!

Anonymous said...

I'll put my UNCC Engineering education up against NCSU, Va. Tech, or any other major University outside of MIT. Actually, I have and I have never met another Engineer as prepared for success as I was. UNCC Engineering is a top program.
This move would show just how much football is superior over basketball even without a game played. Smart decision if you ask me. Also, ECU, App, and CLT could become the football schools in a basketball state.

Anonymous said...

I'm not interested in salaries for grads, national vs. regional, etc. Just talk to an alum from App vs. pretty much any other school listed in these posts and tell me who sounds more educated. Charlotte is good for certain trades....and maybe trades that have good salaries. But, I'll take the well-rounded educational experience and close knit college environment that I experienced from Appalachian State over any school in the state. My extended family agrees as well....that included graduates of UNC-CH and UNCC.

Anonymous said...

It is truly a "bad day" when we feel compelled to bash institutions of higher learning in the shadow of sports. I am a major college sports fan, but lets remember what these institutions are for (including our Community Colleges)...preparing students for better future then many of their parents.

Congrats on any invites you get (FBS or not), but please, leave any cracks about the academic nature of schools out of this conversation.

PS...I would like to give a shout out to ASU's Brian Quick who was chosen as the 1st pick in the second rd. of this years NFL draft. Well done, young man!

You mean that engineering school that US News (which granted, has flaws) has ranked behind NC A&T? I actually think US News ranks the entire university higher than they rate their engineering school. I'm sure whoever said Queens was joking.

If you're just looking at reading and math SAT scores, the average incoming UNCC student scored a sterling 1072. App's is 1141. That's a pretty big difference.

As a proud member of Niner Nation who lives in his parent's pool house in North Charlotte, I got a great education while not having to grow up and go to a real college. Now I am currently 24 years old and thanks to our great leader president I plan on staying at home for years on end. I will stay on mom and dad's healthcare plan till 26, I am getting my disability and unemployment checks in the mail on the first of the month....and we will have FBS football soon. I though it was great that my dad purchased a PSL for me in the new stadium so that we can try and create a college experience that I must say till now I thought was a bit lacking. It was tough going to class with working moms, and janitors taking night classes, just really didn't get me to motivated in my school ya know?

This conversation has gotten off subject. It's now sounding like a family squabble between 3 brothers "I can pee higher up the wall than you can".

ECU doesn't want to be looked down upon by the ACC & BE, but looks down on Charlotte & App. App St says we've won 3 national championships so we're as good as or better than Clt & ECU. Clt says we're the youngest but we're the prettiest.

WOW, hang onto that one moment in your entire school's existence...In fact, make sure you place on the very front of the School's property...wherever the school is located? By the way, why don't you quiz people who are NOT from North Cackolacky and ask them where App State is located; No one knows, as you are irrelevant.

Oh, and App State gets their tiny johnsons handed to them on 8/30/2014, when Michigan plays them AGAIN...don't expect to score any points, Mountaineers.

11:55. Nice try at bashing UNCC Engineering with some crackpot news that nobody has ever heard of. Use that SAT score to get into UNCC's Engineering Program. See if it will happen. SAT scores were dumbed down in the late 90's to make it appear kids performed better.

Anonymous said...

Wouldn't both ASU and ECU be considered better since they both have real football teams.......you really can't counter that statement until Charlotte has a football product to showcase. Charlotte will put a team on the field in 2013 it will lose a lot to schools no one ever heard of, see GaState's problem. People will not attend games to watch schools no one knows exist beat up on a school with "so much potential". Here is what happened to GaState when they started football from nothing: http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2011/10/18/bill-curry-learning-some-things-hard-way-at-georgia-state/

UNCC's academics would rate near the upper half on Conference USA, with Rice and Tulane at the top and UTEP at the bottom

Anonymous said...

yep, outside of Rice and Tulane, C-USA academics aren't hitting on much...part of the reason I hope App never goes FBS to a dumbed down conference like Sun Belt or CUSA. The Southern Conference contains very good small schools like Davidson, Furman, etc. FCS in general contains lots of tucked away, excellent academic institutions, who put academics before football. I'm a big football fan, but there would be something special lost if we (ASU) move up. There is certainly no correlation between big school/big conference and great education....often it might be the opposite. Colleges with 20,000 + students seem like mere factories for pumping out social security #'s with degrees.

Everyone is going to think their college experience at their university is the best. I go to Charlotte currently, so naturally I believe Charlotte to be the best in this little pointless argument. Dear UNCC/Charlotte College (or whoever you are),

Please accept our sincere condolences but Conference USA has decided to reject UNCC or Charlotte College or whoever the hell you are as a member again.

At this point CUSA must make rational decisions to accept only those institutions who do not suffer psychological bipolarism identity crisis schools. We kicked you out in 2005 because of this or maybe you forgot. We do not tolerate schools in a state of confusion of their own identity. UNC system lists you as UNCC 49ers only since 1965. There are no records of a Charlotte College 49ers in UNC system files.

This is why CUSA was forced to extract UNCC/Charlotte College out of the conference in 2005 after 10 years. For the first 5 years you were UNCC 49ers and then your AD Rose switched the name to Charlotte College 49ers for the last 5 years causing great confusion with all our CUSA members and their fans etc. Who the hell are you?

What is even more confusing to CUSA is UNCC 49ers claims to be UNCC 49ers in all departments except the Athletic Dept where it suddenly becomes Charlotte College 49ers. This is very unbecoming to your UNC school and very odd to say the least.

At CUSA we unfortunately cannot tolerate such incomprehensible confusion thus whoever you are, you are hereby rejected from CUSA again.

Please accept out sincere apology on your paranoia schizophrenia mental disorder breakdown of thought processes. We hope you recieve help for it and get your shit together.

If not dont expect to be accepted by any other conferences in America since everyone knows about you whoever you are and good luck with all that.

Very truly yours,

Conference USA president and all member schools.

ps Dont call us we will call you and please keep sharp objects away from AD Rose.

It must really frustrate you to see the success that Charlotte has had in Athletics as well as in Education. LOL. I love it.

To all of those haters I have to say this. Yes, UNC-Chapel Hill and NCS ranks higher than Charlotte, but these colleges have been around since the 1700's and 1800's. I expect them to be better. However, Charlotte has been around since the 1940's and we are constantly growing. Our academics are constantly growing and our athletic programs are growing. There is a strong probability that Charlotte will be a powerhouse in academics and athletics in the future. Charlotte is the largest city in the Carolinas and is becoming a destination for people to live and work. The school will go along with the growth. I challenge the alumni, students, and fans to continue to support the school because great things are coming. I am a graduate of Charlotte. I got accepted to UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State but I chose Charlotte because I love the city and all of my heroes were graduates of the university. Those other schools are great but Charlotte has always had a place in my heart. The staff was wonderful and they treated me like a person. I even donate money to the school on a monthly basis. ECU and App State are wonderful schools and deserve respect. I agree that if these three schools were in the same conference together and the right marketing was put in place a conference could be created that could rival all of the others. People love a winner, but they also love an underdog even more.

ECU and App St. are and always will be garbage institutions. A home for those that could not get into anywhere else. There is no rational person who would even try to make the argument otherwise.

It does not surprise me that so many EZU fans are worried about Charlotte. I would be too. EZU's campus looks like a homeless village and who on God's green earht actually WANTS to be in Greenville? The answer to that question is nobody. Charlotte is 10,000 times better than Greenville! All ways has been, all ways will be.

I don't know one person who went to UNCC as a first choice. I'm from Concord originally, and every single person either dropped out of State or UNC and went back home or transferred from UNCC (to stay home and save money) to a better school like App or NCSU. Charlotte is not a real college environment. UNC and ASU are. My brother went to UNC and UNCC and says to himself. As an educator, I can tell you first hand that kids who do not get accepted to ASU often go to UNCC and UNCG...not taking anything away from Charlotte (they do have good programs) but, it's just not that appealing for many kids. The admission standards are more similar for UNCW and UNCA to ASU, partly because they are smaller. UNCC is more of a backup plan school for many kids these days...I think more so than it was in the 90's. But, it's not as much of a school to fall back on than ECU and WCU.

Anonymous said...

also, the WSJ salary info that someone posted would be obvious to most intelligent people. Charlotte graduates more engineering types and ASU is well known for education majors (underpaid but smart people, generally). As far as the salary BS goes, UNC Chapel Hill wasn't that high. But, it's well known that you can get a pretty darn good education there. Being well educated has little to do with salaries of graduates. The salary info is merely a correlation (not a cause-effect relationship to level of education) to schools that graduate students in certain fields. You could also argue that UNCC has more students who are interested in just going to college and making money...not really interested in learning and taking advantage of an authentic, engaging college atmosphere. So, many of their graduates might seek out money above all else. Some of the folks I know with lots of moolah are not necessarily the brightest, or most educated, or the most respectable people in general.....mainly people who don't value education very much. You can attend a marginal college and still make lots of money.

To Anon 2:12pm-Charlotte must be doing something right. They have over 25,000 students and they are one of the fastest growing schools in the state. They endowment is growing and they are constantly building better athletic and academic buildings.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 2:42

Of course Charlotte is one of the fastest growing. They were designated around 12 years ago as one of the state schools to expand by a certain # of students by 2010. I think 25,000 was their # to reach (although now the push is to 40,000?).. so were WCU (up to 10,000 and UNCW (don't remember the growth target). But, you could also argue that it becomes easier to get accepted if they need to grow (which is my theory on UNCC). ASU doesn't really have the real estate in Boone to grow much more (other than up). I would also argue that the small college, personable, family-oriented atmosphere provides a better education than the huge, factory like model of many huge state schools. But, yes, Charlotte is probably doing many things right. I'm sure they have embarked on a huge campaign to get more alumni support to increase the endowment, and they have the engineering grads to help. But, I've never thought of UNCC as a school where lots of alumni give back...but, it could be changing. Also, don't forget that when the major flagship schools and more competitive schools become more competitive, the other state schools will fill up with more students very quickly, because they are backup schools. WCU had the largest enrollment increase (percentage wise) in the system last year or the year before. I don't think WCU is known as the most desirable in the system. You have to attribute it to more kids getting rejected at ASU or UNCA and wanting to go to school in the mountains. ASU is often a backup plan for UNC rejects (because they are both in small college towns with an authentic collegiate atmosphere. I would imagine UNCC is a backup for NCSU as well (at least engineering and architecture majors). But, UNCC has always been known as a commuter school...can't deny it. It's a suburb of the largest city in NC....it's only natural. Also, new buildings do not equal quality education. Otherwise, Harvard wouldn't be in the same league as UNCC.

For all you small town bumpkins anyone who has lived in bigger type cities urban centers settings with large concentrations of population knows they all have massive urbanized public universities and 90% commute to save while working part time on the side.

Most large cities have urban public universities 2-3 times the size of UNC Charlotte.

U Central FL is now has over 60k students mostly commuters from Orlando-Metros 2.5 million.

U South FL in north Tampa and its 3.5 million metro pop has over 50k students and most commute.

to the 2:30 genius, Charlotte graduates more "education majors" each year than ASU and is 2nd in number to only ECU.

NINERsummmey13 said...

You can really tell who the App. State fans are on here. They are just pissed off that UNCC is starting to steal their thunder. App. State is just pissed because UNCC is jumping up already and having more publicity than App has ever gotten and ever will get. It's also funny looking at what people have said on here about the program when it hasn't even started yet. That just shows you are an ignorant moron and scared about 49er football. Another thing for the idiots who talked trash about the athletics at UNCC, UNCC has had some of the sports programs than App state has ever had or ECU. Our baseball team has made it every year to the playoffs and have won many A-10 titles. The track program here is outstanding and they have many people go to the national meets every year and have won many track titles in conference. The Golf team and tennis teams has also been some of the best around compared to App State and ECU. The men's basketball is starting to come back a little bit with the new coach and the girls basketball is great making it to the NIT and NCAA playoffs. Now about the education here, we have some of the best programs around. We have one of the best engineering programs on the East Coast, we have an outstanding nursing program, a ranked business program, an upcoming Kinesology program, and a great education program. So please get the facts straight when you decide to bash my fine school and post ignorant comments that you obviously know nothing about. GO NINERS!

I attended both ASU and Charlotte for undergrad. I'm also from Boone so I'm very familiar with both schools, however my Alma Mater is with Charlotte.
This whole argument of who has a better school is getting old. The overall academics at both schools are very good if not equal, but it depends on the program. Charlotte has one of the best engineering programs in the state under NCSU. Those who apply sometimes have Charlotte as their first choice. Duke, Areva and Siemens all recruit from here and will tell you the same thing. Overall the argument of whether who is better academically, Id say Charlotte is. Remember ASU is not accredited as a PHd research school, CHARLOTTE IS. ASU does have a better accounting and full-time MBA program, but that's it. There is no denying that kids have Charlotte as a "safety" school. The only reason they want to go to App is for the location. If App was located in Shelby, guess what, no one would go there. The landscape at Charlotte is changing fast however. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the top 10 schools in NC in the next decade. The amount of money being poured into the university by fed and private grants is amazing. Private companies are donating millions because they see Charlotte's potential. We are slowly moving up.
And while App does have a better college "experience," that's only because they have football and we don't. That's a huge factor when HS kids decide where they want to apply. Charlotte is no longer thought of as a "commuter" school like it used to be. Considering UNC, Duke and App have been around for over 100 years, Id say our 63 year accomplishment is pretty remarkable. Let's see where we stand in another 50 yrs... will be interesting to find out.

to the 3:59 genius. That's because UNC-Concrete and ECU have more students overall. App has long been known to have the best college of education in the state and one of the best in the region. There is a larger percentage concentration of students in the context of the university population who graduate as Ed majors. ASU also has far more NC Teaching Fellows and graduates in the education practice in the state than any other school in the state, despite being a smaller university than some other schools. Get it right before you post.

Isn't it sad and somewhat ironic that App St. Is supposed to be some great school for education, when clearly the people that attend App St. did not value their own?

Anonymous said...

I couldn't imagine getting a better education in the great north state than I got at ASU. That includes Chapel Hill, where several family members went, and they agree. That doesn't mean I can afford or justify giving tons of money to ASU. But, the Yosef club is clearly not hurting, considering all of the enhancements to athletic facilities in recent years. So, alums give back, alot. In fact, probably more than most state schools other than UNC and NCSU, if you weigh in the # of students, alums, etc. vs. some larger schools.

This is great news for the Niners. I'm not a UNC Charlotte grad but I have NO idea why all the trolling from other fans. Why not be be upbeat for a school doing better for itself and its students? I'll definintely try to attend as many Niner football games as I can. Best of luck Niners!!!

Charlotte Alumnus said...

Hey 2:12, I guess I'll go ahead and debunk that one for you. I applied to only two schools: NC State and UNC Charlotte (I went for engineering). I was accepted to both and chose Charlotte. So there you go, you can never say again you've never heard of Charlotte being someone's first choice. I also have several friends who also chose Charlotte first, none of us from the Charlotte area.

Also, anyone who went to Charlotte and says they didn't get a true college experience didn't try very hard. The only thing you can argue it truly lacks is football, and we're taking care of that problem now. The "suitcase school" moniker simply doesn't apply anymore.

Charlotte Alumnus said...

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention. I actually had one friend who started at NC State for engineering, transfered to UNC Charlotte (and no, he didn't flunk out of State) and said he actually got a better education at Charlotte than at State. So that can go both ways.

Anonymous said...

Charlotte Alumnus, if that's the case, then it's good to hear for UNCC, you and your friend. I don't doubt it, really. I'm just going with what I know, and I know much more of the contrary. The majority still rules. I really don't doubt that Charlotte is a good school. There are lots of good schools in the UNC system. But, there are certain stigmas and reputations for schools that don't really die very easily. I mean, ASU was once known as more of a hippy school than it is now. Sustainability and the environment are still very high priorities at ASU, although it seems that App attracts more "normal college kids" now that might have gone to UNC in previous decades. It's all a matter of perspective, bias, and personal experience, right? I didn't even consider UNCC, mainly becuase the campus and area did not appeal to me aesthetically. But, then again, I didn't want to be an engineer or architect.

I also only applied at 2 schools, NC State and Charlotte (engineering). I was accepted to both and chose Charlotte because State was too big of a campus for my tastes, especially without a car freshman year. I have not regretted that decision once and I love my career. I have yet to be turned down for an engineering job I've applied for, and I have The Lee College of Engineering to thank for most of that. Anyone that talks poorly of UNC Charlotte’s engineering programs have no clue what they are talking about.

Go NINERS!

I don't know much about UNCCC's engineering program. But, I do see the US News link above. Of course, it's for graduate programs. Maybe Charlotte doesn't have a grad program.

They probably listed us under Chapel Hill, since they dont have a C of E........happens all the time.

Anonymous said...

nope. UNCCC is listed...just under the "unranked" programs near the end of the list.

Anonymous said...

If I met a Mercer, Kennesaw State, or Houston Baptist grad, I'd be sure to congratulate them on their new D1 football programs. I wouldn't trash their education, either, because my parents raised me to be respectful.

Perhaps App fans are obnoxious towards the schools I mentioned, too. More likely, this is just their own little way of expressing fears of being eclipsed. Either way, they look scared, weak, and overly defensive.

I believe it's, "Those who can do, those who can't teach".

You know the reason that 1 out of every 2 grads can not get a job is because of schools like App. and ECU.

I hope that in time the NC senate and the UNC system will revoke the charters of schools like UNCP, App. St., NCCU, and ECU. Also with this motion they need to retroactively revoke all degrees that were given as the are essentially the equivalent of GED's. That would force these individual to either accept that they never attended college, or force them to attend a real university.

coming from someone who has worked in industry and as a teacher, teaching is one of the hardest jobs in existence. Many of us can and still "do", but choose to teach. I'm not really sure what you mean by "doing". Becuase most educators that I know "do" a heck of a lot more for society than others, especially corporate tools.

I agree with anon 9:03. The UNC system will always be held back by these so called institutions. (I would add WCU to that list as well) The sooner we can either disbanded them, or have them placed in to some kind of official "B" list (as opposed to the rest of the current UNC system which would remain the "A" list) the better. Think of all the funding we could free up if we would only stop throwing down the black hole that these "B" llist schools represent.

Anonymous said...

The "A" list would include (in order of regional and national respect) Just to give perspective, I threw in some private schools as well. Some of these are more respected than some of our doctoral universities in the state.

Davidson
Duke
UNC/Wake Forest
NCSU
ASU (regional, but respected
for value and programs)
UNCA (liberal arts, but respected)
Elon (not necessarily reality..I
worked there for a while)

threshold (could be A or B)UNCC, maybe UNCW

The "B" list

probably UNCC and UNCW
UNCG
ECU/WCU
Campbell (because they offer pharmacy and law)

a bunch of other small, private schools and state schools would be in a category below this. This takes into consideration value, quality of students admitted, freshman retention (are they happy?) UNCC and UNCG are at somewhat of a disadvantage for some becuase of their city locations, although they are "national" U's. ECU has a med school but still has lower undergrad standards than some.

Anonymous said...

I think anon 9:03 & 10:01 each intended that Charlotte be in the "A" group. App St. is not a respected university. I know for a fact that several large companies no longer recruit there. Just accept it that App. is a lower tier bottom feeding school and move on.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure I like this. C-USA is terrible (the 49ers could take their 28 recruits and 5 walk-ons and beat Memphis and UAB tomorrow). I understand Rose not liking being an FCS independent, but I'd enjoy going 11-1 for 4 straight years against the soft schedules we are assembling, and getting an FCS playoff appearance or two, which would help build credibility with recruits once we make the jump.

I want to see us get to FBS like everybody else, but trying to get into C-USA in year 3 is rushed and short-sighted.

"large companies" are probably not what the average ASU grad seeks out. Although, to be fair, Bank of America, etc. are loaded with ASU alums from the Walker College of Business.

But, you're right, most ASU grads would probably not seek cubicle jobs. Why go to college for cubicle training? Truly educated individuals are more likely to make an impact on this world through means other than sitting at a desk. App graduates some of the best accountants and MBA's in the state. But, you're probably more likely to see future professors and students who value higher education at App than some of the other state U's. Perfect blend of liberal arts college and somewhat large university.

I do, however, know quite a few ASU grads with high paying jobs. Smart people can have fun in college and balance it all by simultaneously being strong academically and successful. Work hard, play hard. Lots of similar students in Chapel Hill...another consummate college town. As far as pot goes, you'll find plenty at Ivy League schools as well.

To 8:04, you are a moron. That is not proof and does not prove a thing. Your posting information that is false and really can not prove. App. is a great school and so is UNCC. I went to App. State for awhile and hated it, maybe because its too liberal and single minded. UNCC actually the sister school of UNC-Chapel Hill and works with that school. Chapel Hill get some of the UNCC students to go their Graduate school for their law program and in return Chapel Hill sends students to UNCC for engineering, architecture, and teaching now. Get your facts straight and pull your single headed mind out of you butt.

You're telling me to get my facts straight when I just posted real facts (sigh). I'm baffled as to how you can deny that. My post was the only accurate comment in this entire thread with actual facts that were backed up.

My comment struck a nerve and I'm sorry - however it is real data. UNCC is a great school - I have family that went there and loved it. I chose App for their business school. Your comment about UNCC being a sister school - not sure where you are going there. App is a sister school to UNC-CH as well - both UNCC and App are sister schools to the UNC system. Are you translating UNCC to be more of a sister school because you share the same first three letters? It is YOU who must get their facts straight. Rebuttal? Come back with real facts and not blind opinion.

Here is another peace of information. App is ranked in region in the top 10, not nationally cause they don't even have a ranking in the us news today. Also in that South Region ranking NCSU,Chapel Hill, Duke, WF, and many others, including UNCC, were not put in those rankings because they were put in the national rankings and UNCC is nationally ranked. Go look it up if you want facts, under nationally ranked schools. App. might not even be ranked because they are not even a big enough school, but they were not even close to even being put on the nationally rankings for schools.

Anonymous said...

NINERsummey13, now, now, now. I respect your opinion. But, please. You've got to be out of your mind if you think a better education comes from a bigger school. The national rankings simply mean that you offer several PHd programs, and that your admin wanted to go that route, as a primary research school. I know I got a better education than many of my peers who went to NCSU. In fact, my brother in law says my wife (who turned down UNC) and I got a better education than he did at UNC. We both went to App. It's all what you make of it as an individual. But, please don't confuse size, national vs. regional, etc. as a deciding factor. That's almost like saying you get better service and product at Walmart or Lowes than the small local hardware store. They might be cheaper, but they certainly don't offer better quality or a more personable experience. Charlotte is big, possibly massive one day. But, it's not that hard to get accepted, nor is it a school that is really relevant on a national level. Honestly, kids get better educations at the Davidsons, Furmans of the world. Kids have always gone to UNCC for engineering, arch...that's not new. But, those programs are not nationally relevant. App has and still is the best ed program (by far more teaching fellows and people in the profession state wide than any other school in NC). Also, one of the best business schools, exercise science programs, communications (broadcasting), geography, and more. ASU is a "regional" school by choice. That fits the university offerings, location, etc. Although, there could be a push to be a "national" U. That would be a bad decision, though, IMHO. Talk to students, hang out on each campus, talk to graduates to form an actual opinion.
