Charlotte 49ers call Friday news conference

The Charlotte 49ers will have a news conference Friday to "discuss conference affiliation" -- in other words, to announce they're leaving the Atlantic 10 for Conference USA.

The news conference will be at 11:30 a.m. on the third floor of UNC Charlotte's student union. 49ers coaches -- including football's Brad Lambert, men's basketball Alan Major and women's basketball Cara Consuegra -- will be there, along with chancellor Phil Dubois, AD Judy Rose and board of trustees chair Gene Johnson.

The news comes the same week that the Atlantic 10 announced the addition of Butler. Also, it's been reported that Charlotte will be joined in an expanded CUSA by Florida International, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Texas-San Antonio and Old Dominion. UTSA and ODU, incidentally, have recently started football programs, as Charlotte will do in 2013.

Good for UNC Charlotte! I'm excited for them, but more excited because Louisiana Tech will be in C-USA.

Now can I can see my Dawgs and Techsters here in CLT and regionally.

I'm still not sold on this. Going to a set-in-stone, 1-bid basketball league will make it difficult to get back to the NCAAs. So if, in a couple years, Major gets us to a 22-5 record and we lose in the conference final and end up in the NIT, all the haters will keep screaming for Major's head.

In football, I'm glad we have a super-weak schedule the first 2 years, since it's going to be tough to get good players by playing the first 2 years in a lame-duck situation.

This is a step up in all other sports, though, as the A-10 is rotten at everything but men's hoops.

Conference USA...Here we come! I can't wait to play these teams...49ers will roll them all!!

This move means that Charlotte without even playing a down is better than ASU in football. Soon we will be on par or surpass ECU as well.

Yes we will lose some of our games. But I rather lose a Div-I game than win a Div-II game lik App!

Anonymous said...

ASU and ECU are bum schools...UNCC will soon be the largest school in the state. GO NINER NATION!!!

Win for all sports. What we dont get in NCAA bball tournament revenue we will more than make up for with money from a bowl game. Not to mention what has to be a better TV contract.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above comment. It is a win for all sports, and as we ALL know UNCC will NOT be in the NCAA tournament anytime soon or the NIT for that matter. Bawhahahaha!!! Lol...

Yes, Charlotte did as well Metro, during our 10 years in C-USA. Expect that to become the norm again.

Go Niners. Honestly, I'm kind of shocked how this all went down. Until this, I had little confidence in AD, Chancellor. That's changing somewhat. Lastly, I've resented the hell out of being in the A10. An O.K. basketball conference but makes zero sense geographically, culturally for UNCC to be in it.

Anonymous said...

Make no mistake about this - Judy did not get us into CUSA.
The city of Charlotte and its TV market did. And if we started football 10 years ago we would have stayed in CUSA. If we started 15 years ago we would be talking about going to the Big East.

UNCC 49ers have already lost 50% of its supporters and donations due to Roses idiot name change pumped by the Disturber of course who always gets everything backwards and looks stupid.

Stuffing some bastarized bogus sports gimmick name down throats will lose the rest of the donors and support now.

Alumni will pull for the other team although last place is a certainly for at least about 99 years.
Just keep the scores close by at least 40-50 pt margins.

If App.St. and ECU were to play the 49'ers in the Queen City 5 yrs. in a row you guys will not have a win over those two schools so close your traps and face the TRUTH!

Anonymous said...

^^^^You may be right about ECU. They are established and it could take 4-5 years to challenge and beat them at the FBS level.

I think if we would not have a win against App. St. in 20 years. Largely due to the fact that there is no reason for Charlotte to play a Div-II school.

GO PIRATES!

I largely agree with the above except in one respect. Can we PLEASE call UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Chapel Hill? It is their name! THERE IS NO UNC! Period! It does not exist! There is also no "flagship school" Wich is why their diploma's say "at Chapel Hill" on them. If they were really the flagship school this designation would not be needed.

Hey Editor! Yeah I am talking to you! I have this comment saved! So delete all you want b/c I will post it again!

I hate that name and it sucks that if our professors get quated in the WSJ or win Nobel Prizes MORE THAN HALF THE TIME it gets reported as a UNC accomplishment. Sure it gets fixed the next day on the back of the editorial pages but the damage is done by then.

App. St.'s AD stated yesterday what everyone already knew. That App. is a dirty little hippie college and is not a real school. That's why they were passed over. Now if only we could get the people that post on here to follow their leaderships example!

Anonymous said...

Seriously - What kind of loser wakes up every morning at 7am and the first thought on his or her mind is to log onto the internet and post some psychotic rant in a blog few people outside the school read about some dead queen? An absolute nut job! If changing the name to UoC will run this nut case off - do it now before he hurts himself or others. Seek help dude.

Anonymous said...

The greatest thing about the nut job is that he hits page refresh on this blog constantly rather than do something productive such as play World of Warcraft 24 hours a day.

I hope he never leaves. I kinda enjoy it. It's like watching an unemployed bum shout obsenities at no one in particular while you are gainfully employed. It makes you appreciate what you have even more.

ECU is no slouch in football. Neither is Southern Mississippi. If the 49ers can make the same splash in college football that they did when they started playing D1 basketball in the late 60's (Final Four in the 70's), we are all in for some good games here in Charlotte.

Anonymous said...

Rice is the only school in C-USA. This conference sucks. Fire Rose and Major who too.

Anonymous said...

at Anon 12:44, that dirty little hippy college puts Concrete Community College to shame. Instead of U of Charlotte, why not just add more C's for concrete and community college. UNCCCC or better yet, CCCC. Has a nice ring, huh? I'm glad you moved up (good for the Charlotte area and your alums/fans) but, you guys have nothing on App State as far as academics and atmosphere. I've attended both schools. Not much intellectual activity down there. Also, I'm sure that there are plenty of App fans posting on here who appear jealous (there's more support for App in Charlotte than UNCC). But, I would hate for ASU to end up in the Sun Belt or MAC or some lame FBS conf. They all seem dumbed down and not respected. To me, there would be more excitement and game day atmoshpere at the FCS level ASU is already in than there would be playing Troy or Western Kentucky on a Thursday night.

Anonymous said...

To the App fan claiming he went to UNCC, you need to try again. You have obviously not stepped onto the UNCC campus. If you had, you would know it is predominently brick.

Now, what is Bruce's problem? My guess is "Bruce" is still in elementary school. He has no idea how to construct a sentence using thought and logic to convey his true feelings.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if Bruce is in elementary school or not, but I am pretty sure he is not and has never been a student at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 9:24

You could not be more wrong. I have seen App st. and all of its supposed "glory" I believe the "dirty little hippie college" statement to be fairly accurate. Charlotte is an impressive university in both it's size and its apperance. App is just....sad. Seriously why would you go there? For the moonshine and the hiking/skiing after class? No one will hire you from that place except maybe to be a park ranger/ski instructor. Another reason Charlotte is > than App....CHARLOTTE HAS DIV-I FOOTBALL!!! Compared to App's DIv II thing they call football.

appfan said...

ENOUGH!

You, all of you, are beneath me! I AM A GOD! Now kneel before me, you dull, green, ugly creature-

Anonymous said...

^^^^well it finally happened. One of the App kids just could not handle the fact that Charlotte > App. St, and his mind snapped. Sad really.

Anonymous said...

The UNCCC campus went to more brick fairly recently, though. That's actually what NC State has always had throughout campus, and it's not known as one of the more scenic campuses. I would venture to say that there are many more alums who are working, respected professionals in various fields from App than UNCC, just basing it on experience. That includes business, education, and communications, and of course sustainable development, technology. Outside of engineering, ASU is generally more respected. Their grads are sought after by many organizations. Also, after working with teenagers for years, there is know argument for which school is more appealing to attend. ASU takes the cake in NC, right behind UNC. The only issues are the lack of diversity (which UNCC far exceeds us) and the sometimes harsh winters. Otherwise, people just like it there. Students are happy at App State.

Anonymous said...

oops... should have read"no argument"

Anonymous said...

Charlotte my top choice for college. I feel like I made the right choice and I got a good education and a good job.

If App grads think that their school is/was right for them - that's totally fine.

But App grads might be missing the point a bit when it comes to the topic of conference alignment.

Let's look at the national universities in North Carolina: Duke, East Carolina, Charlotte, NC State, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest. Now let's look at the regional universities in North Carolina: App State, Campbell, Elon, Gardner-Webb, Montreat, NCCU, Pfeiffer, Pembroke, WCU, Wingate, WSSU. See any difference?

If App looks at Charlotte and decides that they want to play with the big boys ... then they should put up or shut up. Get the accreditation needed to advance to a national level university.

Otherwise, App is just another regional university from the South ranked below #1 Rollins College in the US News Report college rankings.

Anonymous said...

Davidson is better than every school you mentioned for academics and they are a liberal arts school. UNCA is considered better than probably all but 3 or 4, they are also a small liberal arts college. The national, regional, liberal arts etc. has zero to do with conferences and FCS vs. FBS. It is all about tv market, my friend, period. Also, Rollins College is also a very good school, and more academic than almost every school you mentioned. As far as academics go UNCC and ECU are easier to get into and not as well respected as as at least 3 of the regional schools you mentioned, as well as several smaller liberal arts schools. My brother went to UNCC and thought it was just "ok". He went there because he worked fulltime in the area at the time. But, he thinks that I got a better education in Boone, and so does my brother in law, who attended UNC. Probably because I had smaller classes, and ASU doesn't feel like a factory or huge company, although they are fairly big...they've still maintained the smaller college feel. But, back to my point, the status of the school has nothing to do with getting an invite. Most of the Sunbelt schools are "regional".

Anonymous said...

Well, then, I'll just have to be jealous of App. When we're in FCS together, Charlotte can sell kids on Conference USA, market and parents getting to watch their kids on tv, new facilities, and future rivalries with big, nationally accredited universities.

App can sell kids on your brother-in-laws academic opinions and a weakened, watered-down FCS.

Godspeed.

Anonymous said...

I would agree that charlotte will have some good selling points for football. They should actually compete with ASU for the Charlotte area athletes right away. But, I don't agree that they have selling point over App for the regular college student. No way. Charlotte will need to prove themselves fairly quickly or they will start to lose recruits. Lot of kids would like to win titles and play in front of 30,000 every Saturday over playing in a small suburban stadium only to get waxed every week.

Anonymous said...

For the past 10 years, every football naysayer has not been proven to be wrong. They have proven to be SPECTACULARLY wrong.

You acknowledge that Charlotte has good selling points and we've already shown to be able to pick up recruits at a 3-star level and we've already shown we can get a recruit to reject App State and sign with Charlotte. And we were able to do it while App State was telling kids about their 'super secret' FBS invite and while we were an FCS upstart with no conference home.

Fast forward. Now we can tell kids that we'll play a couple seasons of FCS followed by a couple seasons of FBS while App State is acknowledging that no FBS conference has given them an invitation.

That has to scare you, no?

How about ODU playing a light schedule their first two seasons, doing quite well, and then being a playoff caliber team in Year 3? Can you really guarantee that Charlotte will "get waxed every week"? I don't think you can.

You guys are f'ing scared, dude. You don't rag on any other upstart football program because any other upstart football program doesn't spell disaster for you.

You're being petty and bitchy about the quality of education of one of the state's largest research institutions with a wide array of doctorate, masters, and baccalaureate programs. A school whose quality of education is recognized as a rising star while your school remains stagnant. Applications have gone way up with the introduction of saturday football and along with that, the quality of student will go way up, too. All you've got in response is, "but, but, your bricks are recent".

App fans can tell me not to be proud of my school all they want. I am proud of it. App can't dream of moving up. App says that their infrastructure is at full capacity. You've maxed out your minor league championship football team. You have no will or desire to be a better research institution or a nationally recognized research institution. You have nowhere to go but down and your only prayer is to stay exactly where you are.

Charlotte has nowhere to go but straight up. We're at cellar level. And, yet, some see our program as having passed App's without even playing a down.

Anonymous said...

Not interested in a dramatic, whiny debate. I think you should be proud of your school. You have grown tons in recent years. That's great. So have other commuter schools, like UCF, Ga State, ODU, etc. Those are also city dweller, urban, commuter campuses, sort of like Charlotte. It's only natural. In fact, I'm surprised that UNCC has not pushed for a med program, with so many hospitals to team up with nearby. But, I'm not interested in App "growing" to be a national school, nor am I interested in App being in a marginal low-level FBS conference. As many App fans that have complained about admin not aggressively marketing us, I like the wait for a better option approach that they are taking. I feel like we'll join a conference with Ga Southern, JMU, Delaware, and other current FCS schools, as a combo former Southern Conference/CAA deal at some point. The ASU admin seems to want to keep and develop new regional rivalries within a conference for many reasons. Haste makes waste. Hopefully, they'll see it through and wait for the right opportunity. It's not a race. UNCC should get 3 star recruits right away. Many good athletes would like to play near the city, in a warmer climate, with more nightlife. It's only natural. I woudn't disagree. My disagreements have been with the people who get offended by the education, atmospere reality of both schools. Example....this is how much better your "research, national university" is. I work with high school seniors who just finished senior surveys for post high school plans....The one right in front of me shows the shcools where she was accepted, not accepted, etc.
Accepted at UNCC, WCU, Gardner Webb
Not Accepted at ASU, NC State
She will attend UNCC because it's further away from home than WCU. I respect what UNCC has to offer. But, I can present evidence as opposed to many of the naysayers on this blog. I've constantly seen UNCC and UNCG as backups for people who don't get into ASU, and even UNCW and UNCA. Of course, the proximity to a city lures some kids too.

It all depends on what you want to get out of college.

App offers a masters level course in liberal arts courses such as Math, Geography, and Biology. Charlotte also offers the same masters level courses in the university's liberal arts college. A MS/MA graduate from App could find success and a MS/MA graduate from Charlotte can also find success.

But Charlotte will also produce successful engineers, scientists, computer technologists, businessmen, etc. Like me. I consider myself to be successful even without an App State Liberal Arts diploma.

In addition, those App State Math, Biology, and Geography grads could enroll in Charlotte to get their PHD among the dozen or so PHD programs that the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers. App State does not offer such programs.

A non-App State grad could also go to Charlotte to get a PHD in one of the programs offered by the College of Enginering, College of Business, or College of Computing & Informatics. Or, perhaps, an EDD from the College of Education.

If someone has an issue with the level of education at Charlotte, I don't take offense at all! I know what we got.

Anonymous said...

true, true, true. App also has an EdD. That degree is mainly for Educational Administration. But, people I went to grad school with at ASU (for an MA) didn't look at Charlotte for PhD's at all. They went to U of Tennessee, U of Georgia, Auburn, Alamama, UNC, NC State. just sayin....
