Charlotte 49ers headed to Conference USA

The Charlotte 49ers are heading back to Conference USA.

A source with knowledge of the football-driven situation confirmed to the Observer on Tuesday afternoon that the 49ers will return to the league they played in from 1995-2005. The announcement could come as soon as Friday, according to a report on CBSSports.com, which first reported Tuesday that the 49ers will be joined by five other schools in an expanded CUSA – Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Florida International, Texas-San Antonio  and Old Dominion.

49ers athletics director Judy Rose neither confirmed nor denied the move on Tuesday, but said that Conference USA officials met with Charlotte officials earlier in the day. That was the second time in recent weeks the two had met.

The addition of the six schools would bring Conference USA’s membership to 14. The league – which recently lost Memphis, Southern Methodist, Central Florida and Houston to the Big East – currently has East Carolina, Marshall, Alabama-Birmingham, Rice, UTEP, Tulane, Tulsa and Southern Mississippi as its members.

The timing of Charlotte’s move is not known. The 49ers begin playing football in 2013 as an FCS (formerly I-AA) independent and must stay at that level for at least two years before moving up to FBS. Charlotte’s other sports programs could conceivably join CUSA earlier than that.

And it appears the Atlantic 10, Charlotte’s current league which has recently lost Temple to the Big East, is prepared to absorb another defection as it is reportedly considering adding Butler, Virginia Commonwealth and George Mason.

And more news is probably coming: It is expected that Conference USA will merge with the Mountain West sometime later this spring, forming an alliance that would span the country.

Charlotte played in Conference USA from 1995-2005, but had to leave the conference because it didn’t have a football program. The 49ers had men’s basketball rivalries with schools like Louisville, Memphis and Cincinnati at the time – but they’ve all left the league for the Big East since then.

Conference USA future?

New 14-team league could be split into two divisions:

EAST: East Carolina, Florida International, Marshall, Southern Miss, Ala.-Birmingham, Charlotte, Old Dominion

WEST: Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Texas-San Antonio, Tulane, Tulsa, Texas-El Paso

@Anon 6:01pm

clearly you weren't in Charlotte back then. They were rivalries. We havent had any since we left CUSA.

Louisiana Tech is not one of the current C-USA teams and they never have been. They are another team that is rumored as being brought in with the other 5 you mentioned.

As a diehard ECU fan I like this move. FIU, UTSA, North Texas and ODU have solid fanbases and new stadiums. Charlotte wont be far behind.

UTSA averaged 35,000 fans in their first season. FIU is a solid program also. Beat Louisville last year for example.

The Big East will lose Louisville, Uconn and Rutgers sooner rather than later and be left traveling out west while C-USA has brought teams closer to ECU for travel purposes.

He does not understand what a real rivalry is. App only can play D-II football. They don't understand what it's like to be at a real school.

This is where we belong, with big public schools in the south, not small private schools in the northeast. Glad to have ODU coming along,

Now is the time is use the correct birth name:

Rice and Tulane!? I wonder if Charlotte students can fully appreciate how fun a long weekend at either of the schools would be. You definately dont want to drive it, though. Too bad SMU went to the Big East. Dallas would have been another great trip.

Right, says the guy who's stadium is under construction. App has more national titles than Charlotte has first downs. Don't go raising your nose to a program when yours has yet to take the field.

For all the level-headed posters, good move for Charlotte and ECU. The addition of App would've been nice to go with it, but there's no way C-USA was going to slant the conference that heavily to the Mid-Atlantic region.

@Anonymous 6:23: Aww, another butthurt Appalachian State fan. There isn't enough salsa in all of Mexico for all the chips on y'all's shoulders. Seriously, congratulations on the 3 national titles. But, face facts...even when the Mountaineers are at their best, they're (at best) only the 4th best football team in the state. NC State, UNC, ECU can always take App. Give UNCC the two years, then a year or two in Conference USA and they'll be smacking UNC Boone all over the field too.

But seriously, congrats on beating all those glorified high schools...great talent out there, Armanti Edwards is crushing it in the NFL.

.........or add a market like Boone. Face it, this move, like all of the other conference changes, is all about TV market and money. For this I'm glad Charlotte is in a top 20 market. GO NINERS!!!!!

Maybe the A-10 should go after Creighton as a new 16th team,
now that Butler, VCU and George Mason are joining the A-10.

Joe said...

Kiss any chance of basketball doing anything good bye for awhile. If basketball was somehow left in A-10 (I know there is no way that would happen) I would be excited. The A-10 is about the add VCU, George Mason, and Butler to become one of the basketball leagues. Just as we are about to leave.

I know a lot of people are saying to trust the AD taking a step back in basketball right now so it will be better in the future. I am glad that some of you have that faith in the AD I know I don't.

In all the years I have been associated with the university I have never seen anything from the AD to inspire that kind of confidence. I hope I am wrong though as it seems to be the way we are going.

This confirms what I have always known. App. St. should never be considered in the same level of Charlotte. App. St. is a div-I wanna be.

Also App. St. has NEVER won a National Title. Look up who is the Div-I national champs during those years.... The school that won the BCS would be named. Nobody cares about Div-II football.

Anonymous said...

App state is division 1....not division 2. It is the football championship series and then there is the football bowl series. Both are division 1. App State has won more national titles then the amount of years UNCC has been playing football. And the amount of conference championships.... well lets just say uncc will have to play well over a decade of football to even match the number of years to how many conferences championships app has won. Charlotte has to play on the FCS level with Appalachian State. Appalachian State had the best recruiting class in the FCS and even beat out many FBS teams. The new recruiting class rivals that to ECU, which is in conference USA. The charlotte 49ers have recruits that are few and far between and have no guarantee of actually moving up. You have to prove you can win games before you appear in the big leagues. Im not saying they have to do amazing but if you only win one or two games in your first two years you can bet your ass you will have to wait longer to see the jump.

Appalachain State far surpasses the attendance requirement to be and FBS school and even beats out many lower-tier fbs schools in attendance. Just because charlotte has more students what makes you think you can average over 30,000 fans every home game? Just like any charlotte sport it will be fair whether and will only be sold out when a team like Appalachian State comes to town (asu would out number the amount of charlotte fans as well, even though it would be a charlotte home game).

Just some food for thought.

Anonymous said...

What a stupid and unfounded comment " uncc's recruiting class rivals ECU"! Not even on the same planet, go read rivals or scout. So bad!

Awesome go Niners! Just in time for my move to Houston!

Nothing is more funny than listening to UNCC alums beating their chests over how big and bad they are. It's not that easy having a good football team. If it were that easy than everybody would be good. Why is it so bad that App State talks about winning three national titles in I-AA. UNCC fans still talk about going to the Final Four in the 70's and how that still makes them a basketball powerhouse. Oh I forgot, they beat an ACC team in baseball in a midweek game several years ago. And the big public schools in the south aren't in CUSA. They are in the ACC and SEC. CUSA is basically every worst public school in their state and then Rice and Tualne, both of whom have abysmal athletic programs. All this guarantees is that will UNCC not only be a punching bag in basketball and football, they will now also be one in soccer, baseball, track, and golf.

Anonymous said...

I love how ASU fans run on here and talk about how FCS is also Div-I....WHAT A JOKE!!! Are you actually telling me if we ask ANYONE who was the national champ last year that roughly half or more would answer ND State instead of Alabama?!? You guys are a hoot!

FBS = Div-I = Charlotte = Relevant
FCS = Div-II = App. St. = Parents Basement!

Anonymous said...

Probably time to by my PSL's now that they will be joining a real league! I am a fan of the A-10 but the 49ers didn't fit there.

Looking forward to the first game.

Just think, if Judy Rose was not in charge we could have added football 10 years ago and we would be in the Big East right now.

Reasons why UNC-Boone will never become an FBS football team:

1. Sure, Appalachian meets the requirements for attendance at their games. What else is there to do on a Saturday in Boone? You can only make so much granola. Point being, attendance is irrelevant when you bring no viable market to the table. The ACC, SEC, Big East, Big 10, etc. all want one thing: money. The money comes from ESPN and other TV networks, and they pay big dollars for large markets. Boone has a population of 17K people and ASU has 20K students. That simply does not provide a large enough market. Strike 1: Lack of a market.

2. Suppose ASU moved up to FBS and started playing in Conference USA. Now, assume the first game of the year is a home game against Marshall. Do the Thundering Herd want to board a plane with all of their players, staff, equipment, etc. and fly into Greensboro, NC- just to unload the plane onto multiple buses and drive 2 hours up the mountain (football is a winter sport!) into Boone, NC? No they do not. Strike 2: Proximity to airport.

3. Money. Appalachian simply does not have the endowment or revenue that larger Universities have. ASU will need to expand their stadium to a capacity of 35-40K, plus be able to spend another $6-10 million a year to make the jump. It is hard for major Universities to turn a profit on college sports, even though football will almost always make money. Because of gender equality laws, women's sports and smaller sports will have to receive a bump in scholarships and funding as well. ASU football simply does not make enough profit to pay those expenses for other ASU teams. Appalachian has a very small endowment and can not afford being in the red at the end of the sporting year. Strike 3: Lack of funding.

Three strikes and you're out, UNC-B.

Why any Charlotte fan would want to known as UNCC is beyond me. That name has no respect statewide and certainly not nationally. Staying UNCC assures you will always play second fiddle image wise to UNC-CH.Changing your school's name to the University of Charlotte would best thing you could ever do.

Anonymous said...

First UNCC is just a bunch of of graduate students. Second the sport they are good at is being fans. They got lucky to get to the NCAA soccer championship.

Go Niners. I've never liked UNCCs affiliation with the A10. Never made any sense. None. At least there's a semblence of geographic synergy with ODU and ECU. In the A10 what was there UR? OK, but that was all. The A10 sucks. I would advise VCU and Mason to look elsewhere or keep CAA intact. Again the A10 sucks. And who cares about Appalachian State? I don't. They can pound sand for all I care. UNCC is twice the school Boone CC is.

If David reads the comments ... I'd love to hear some commentary or insight into what the advantages of an alliance or merger with the WAC would be. I don't see what that really brings to the table - I think that made more sense if they're trying to say the alliance champ would get a BCS berth. Bu I sounds like the auto bids are going away in the next revision o the system .... So what's the point?

It's a shame to see conference affiliation is all about money now. It would be nice if the schools that showed they could recruit, compete, and draw a crowd at their level got a shot at moving up. Schools like Appalachian State, James Madison, and Georgia Southern, who have a combined 11 national championships at the FCS level, are completely ignored because they are in small markets. Maybe I'm naive, but it seems like a broken system. Oh well, let's hope Charlotte and ODU can maintain attendance above 15,000 playing teams way out of their league.

Anonymous said...

CUSA is a pretty competitive conference and UNCC will be very unlikely to win for the first few seasons. UNCC teams have not gotten a lot of support historically, it seems like attendance is going to be a serious issue. Hopefully Charlotte will be allowed a few seasons at the FCS level to build a program so they don't get steamrolled and then kicked out for attendance issues.

Just sayin, this seems like a bad idea.

I'm still not sure about this. This new C-USA will be like the Southern Conference in basketball, in that only the conference tourney winner will get an NCAA bid. The other sports, it's an upgrade (we have been to the A-10 what Florida St was to the ACC in all other sports). But in order to go to FBS in year 3, they're going to have to expand the stadium as soon as they finish it. Where is the money for that coming from?

It will be nice to be in a league with nearby schools, and it will nice to be back in a league with UAB, where my brother went to school, and whom we could beat right now with our 28 redshirt freshman. But I'm just worried about the logistics and the money.

Anonymous said...

One more thing, for the Rose haters - you do realize that she has hired nearly a dozen coaches that have taken their teams to NCAA tournaments, don't you? And you do realize that Title IX is a FEDERAL requirement, not up to the discretion of a school's AD, don't you?

Of course you don't. You're not intelligent enough to realize that.

CUSA is on life support and the real fans know it. La Tech is a legit program and a case can be made for UNT & FIU, but adding three start up programs is grasping at straws. 49er fans at least be honest with yourself. This has nothing to do with quality of program and everything to do with the league attempting keep a TV deal. CUSA has taken hit after hit and is a shell of what it once was. The loss of the Dallas/Ft Worth, Houston, Orlando, and Memphis markets was a huge blow. The TV boses demanded they land some replacements or the conf was done. Enter San Antoino, Miami, Tidewater Va & Charlotte. UNCC fans can make as many asinine statements as they want, the truth is your school and program didn't get you in CUSA. WBTV, WSOC, WCCB & WCNC did.

Every Rose has its thorn is a obviously a communist dictator tyrant who abuses her authority.

Otherwise before getting kicked out of CUSA the 1st time in 2005 for the confusing name change, she would have used the democratic process and allowed 75,000 UNCC grads a vote as to whether they wanted to keep the original NC Legislature approved UNCC 49ers since 1965 for ALL the UNCC 49er departments. The Athletic Dept is not an exclusive entity to itself.

Maybe Judy Thorn will reconsider her stupidity and ignorance now and use UNCC 49ers exclusively as a new old conference member to avoid getting booted out again and stop abusing her authority without a democratic vote for grads only.

I'm sure you all know by now, but there are two trolls on the Niner boards: One has consistently said Charlotte would never have a football team ever since the first website polled to see if people would get FSLs, all the way up to saying we'd never make it out of the FCS league. Then there's the second troll that seems to support the concept but apparently slept under a rock in 2001 when the athletics program turned UNCC 49ers into Charlotte 49ers after so many national articles confused Chapel Hill and Charlotte. One prominent one was when Ryan Seacrest told the audience that Clay Aiken went to school at Chapel Hill. Anyone outside North or South Carolina gets the two mixed up, so the administration changed it to Charlotte 49ers. No matter how many times you give this troll this story, she seems to think that it's still UNCC. We've given the Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech metaphors, but that doesn't seem to please her. So she's now officially a troll.

So if you can ignore these two trolls, then you'll be better off.

As an ASU alum, I completely agree with most of Anon 8:15. I'm not really sure why so many of my fellow ASU fans get bent out of shape about our not moving up quickly. It was obvious to me that Charlotte would go up more quickly, given the media market factors. That being said, I'm probably in the minority, but I have never been interested in us moving to FBS in order to play a Wednesday night games on ESPNU with low attendance. Boone/ASU has an amazing Saturday afternoon environment for the size of the school/stadium. However, when I see the MTSU's, WKU's, Troy's, etc. that moved up years ago, it's pretty depressing. Big time media markets and conferences also bring big time issues with players, both academically and behaviorally. What makes Boone and ASU special is the location, and relative isolation from large cities and highways. Congrats Niners! I just hope you can sustain the momentum and not end up in mediocrity like many other low to mid-tier FBS schools.

UNCC did not even sell their mandatory allotment of FSL's. Some donor bailed them out and bought the amount. Let's see how it goes when they are 1-12 their first year. I doubt UNCC will be able to join CUSA because of attendance standards.

I'm really happy Charlotte is finally jumping ship and leaving A-10 for CUSA. I can't tell you how happy I am. The A-10 was a recruiting wasteland for Bball. Recruits don't want to play in a league that is full of northern private schools. The lack of rivals also killed Charlotte. There was no substance to our rivalries. Who wants to drive 12 hours to "rival" Xavier) to see a game? No one does.

I think the addition of football and move to CUSA will finally put Charlotte as a legit national presence in the college sports venue. I'm not saying we never did in the past(2011 Mens soccer Nat Championship was huge) but now we have a reason to be talked about around town. High school kids will be looking at Charlotte as a first choice instead of a "safety" school. Look at ECU's success they've had. If ECU didn't have football, they would just be a crappy community college in the middle of nowhere. Football is going to add something great to Charlotte's campus on saturdays and I can't wait. We are finally getting the college game day experience that other schools are so lucky to have. Just imagine tailgating on sat with the Duke/Grigg/Epic buildings in the backdrop, Woodward hall in the distance, to the taste of BBQ and cold beer... Ahh I can't freakin wait!!!!!

This is such a terrible start to the Charlotte football program! We'll never get as many D-League Championships as App since we'll be playing real college football, and we'll never be at the level of an ACC team since we'll be in an actual football conference!

I wish all the people who actually pushed so hard for this could have a say in the decision so we could start as bad as everyone else in the state and be more irrelevant. It's just awful to step on the toes of so many terrible programs with our commitment and potential.

MomandDadPayMyBills said...

Anon 5:53, why would App State fans hate UNCC? They haven't done anything significant as an institution or athletically to deserve any hate from ASU. There is no rivalry whatsoever. We even beat them in basketball every time they come to Boone and the Southern Conference is no b-ball conference to brag about. Of course, they haven't come anywhere near Boone to play b-ball in quite a few years. You need to have some history and tradition to consider App State a rivalry.

Anonymous said...

Since FCS is such a joke (Div II) and is so weak, UNCC fans should accept nothing less than undefeated seasons and FCS National championships in their two years or how ever long they are there before they move up. I think that's fair.

Anonymous said...

They should have stayed in this conference in the first place. Joining the Atlantic 10 was terrible choice. The basketball program is free falling in the Atlantic 10. Since 2006 Charlotte has done absolutley nothing in this conference. The players seem completely unmotivated against Atlantic 10 teams and this season proves that. The last 4 seasons Charlotte won no more than 30% of their 10 games. There is no wonder why, they moved back to Conference USA. Hopefully, Charlotte will turn back to their winning ways in two sports that only matter to the general public: Basketball and Football. Because 2006-2012 has completely uneventfull for basketball.
