Unbeaten 49ers take down Texas State

The Charlotte 49ers improved to 4-0 with a 73-64 victory against Texas State in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout late Thursday/early Friday in Anchorage, Alaska.

The 49ers, off to their fastest start since 1995, will face Oral Roberts (3-1) at 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals. The other semifinal matches Belmont and Northeastern at 11 p.m. Friday. Consolation-round games have California-Riverside facing Alaska-Anchorage at 5 p.m. and Loyola Marymount facing Texas State at 7 p.m.

Charlotte allowed a 10-point second-half lead to evaporate against the Bobcats (2-2), before the 49ers went on an 11-0 run in the game's final 4 minutes, 19 seconds. Charlotte overcame 22 turnovers and a dismal night at the free-throw line (13 of 28) to win.

49ers point guard Pierria Henry had a dominant game, scoring 12 points, grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven assists and three steals.

"Pierria had that look in his eye in warmups," said 49ers coach Alan Major. "I don't always know what that means, but tonight it was good.'

Center Chris Braswell led the 49ers with 18 points and eight rebounds; freshman guard Denzel Ingram had 11 points, making two-of-three 3 pointers.

"Basketball is a game of runs," said Henry. "They had theirs, we had ours. We just kept the faith and never got down. We stopped making simple mistakes."

Truly great coverage by the observer.

No story, no photos and just a blog post.

If we don't stop turning the ball over like this, we're going to get destroyed in conference play. Hope we can clean that up.

9:56 - apparently McClatchy has told the CO it is only permitted to cover 4 college basketball teams, and the CO has chosen to cover UNC-CH, State, Duke and Davidson, and to hell with the 49ers. If I said I was surprised, I'd be lying.

Memo to CO - if you want people to actually pay for access to this site, I strongly suggest that you begin covering the closest Division I college basketball team to your building.

It makes infinite more sense to cover the team with more alums and fans. Winthrop isn't much further than UNCC and they have been much better recently.

become relevant, and then you can get legitimate coverage with stories and pics. until then, you're just a blog school. reality check.

If you were relevant, you wouldn't be posting in a comment field for UNCC basketball.

haha, that's ironic.

The Observer has always given us more attention when we lose than when we win. They love telling the public when we suck but they hate publicisizing us when we are good.

^^^^ Correct. Just look back at our success against all those good CUSA teams. The coverage was so bad most people in Charlotte never even knew we were in the same conference with Cinci, Louisville, Memphis, Marquette, etc. The writeups we did get appeared on Page 10 of the Sports Section behind all the used car adds.

OMG - Did 2-8 superboy newton finally win one against a 3-7 bottom feeder espec since the local fish wrap is crowing so big again like he was the 2nd coming of obama ?????????

BTW With Minter hired by Campbell gotta feel sorry for UNCC 49ers in their christening game since Minter was rejected as head coach by UNCC.

Might be another revenge of John Fox who was the only team to let the D-awgs out to ruff up newton.

Campbell must have paid off millions in debt from his Chap 13 business failures
