Charlotte 49ers: What they're writing

The 49ers' 9-0 men's basketball start is starting to get the attention of the national media. Here's a sampling of what's been written since Charlotte's victory against Davidson last week:

Andy Katz, ESPN, on Alan Major and other former Xavier assistant coaches

Ryan Fagan, Sporting News, on the Davidson victory.

Jeff Eisenberg, Yahoo Sports, says 49ers should be taken seriously now.

Brief mention (at end) from Matt Norlander, CBS Sports.

Only Katz gives us more than a snowball's chance in hell of making the NCAA out of those links. And not a single top 25 vote again this week.

Among the most ridiculous peeks into the crystal ball I have seen: The site realtimerpi.com has us with an RPI of 36, and still says the A-10 is the best conference outside of the big 6. They "project" we're going to finish 7-9, 20-10. Now here's the funny part. They predict 4 A-10 teams in the big dance - Temple, St. Louis, Xavier and... wait for it... ST. BONAVENTURE???????? WTF????? St. B hasn't been out of the bottom 5 of the A-10 yet. They think Butler and VCU won't make it.

I think the only thing we know for sure is that it's too early to know if anybody is any good outside of the top 5 teams of the big 6 conferences.

That's funny. I just looked at the front page of the Charlotte Observer website and I see FOUR articles promoting UNC-Chapel Hill. Oh wait. That's right. The Niners are once again receiving NATIONAL attention instead of LOCAL attention.

All we know right now is that the 49ers can beat patsies. That is an improvement over the last two years when they couldn't

Shows how much you know Mr. dirtdigler! We beat these same patsies (ECU and Davidson) last year too!

NCdirtdigger - while there haven't been any big names on the schedule, I think beating Lamar and Oral Roberts are quality wins. Most expect one of the 2 of them to win the Southland conference. I know, a 1-bid league, but every win against a tournament team is a point in your favor. I wish Belmont had beaten Northeastern in the Alaska semifinal. We'd get more pub if we had beaten Belmont to win that tournament. As long as we keep winning, I'm going to keep looking for reasons to approve instead of disapprove. And isn't it better to be whipping also-rans than losing to Gardner-Webb and the like? The program is getting better.

6:12 - again, what do you expect from an outfit that has being a UNC-CH graduate as a required condition of employment? One of the main reasons why I am not going to start paying for access to this site when the subscriptions kick in.

The UNC-Charlotte 49ers deserve credit but don't toot that horn too loud

They completely sucked the past 2 ys plus padded the current schedule with a twink cupcake pre season

Those who don't remember the past are destined to repeat it

I love the banter. Thanks folks for keeping me entertained. The 49ers may or may not have a breakout season but to get to this point this year is saying something. It feels a bit like it did a few years ago when we were almost a shoe-in for March Madness. You know, before we joined the A-10 back when we played and mostly won games with Cincinnati, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis and the like. Oh, yes and we took the UNCCH group to overtime in the NCAA when we were considered a warm-up game. My buddy Roy Williams should be wearing that "Dadgummit" hat I gave him this year. I couldn't get a hat for Coach Z --- his wouldn't be allowed in public.....

You guys quit picking on the 49ers. It is the best we can do without an African American Studies program like they have over at Chapel Hill.

I want to throw in another barb about the school I love to hate, UNC-Greenville. Did y'all see this on espn.com about the possible dissolving of the Big East?

"A Big East source from a football-playing school told ESPN on Sunday, "The basketball schools are not thrilled with Tulane" and "would have fallen off the ledge if we would have added East Carolina as a full member."

Love it. So it seems that TOO-lane and UNC-Greenville only got invited to the Big Least to fill out a football schedule, and the Catholic schools in the Big Least view themselves as higher life forms than UNC-Greenville. As well they should.

So, will UNC-Greenville return to C-USA when the Catholic schools dissolve the Big Least? I certainly hope so. By 2015, we will have blown so far by them that we might hesitate to put them on our schedule, because having them on the schedule will drag us down.

GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
