CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Observations from the 49ers’ 77-46 loss Friday at Miami:
-- Charlotte’s 9-0 start to the season didn’t mean the 49ers were headed for the NCAA tournament. But losing by 31 to a good Miami team doesn’t mean Charlotte can’t continue moving forward with a young, still developing team.
It all depends on how the 49ers react to the loss and what they learn from it.
The schedule, which has criticized as being too soft, will help with that, with games at one-win Kennesaw State on Sunday and Radford on Wednesday at Halton Arena. Those games will give Charlotte ample opportunity to figure some things out about itself against lesser competition, just in time for another test: Florida State next Saturday at Time Warner Cable Arena.
Charlotte won’t face many more teams – if any – with the kind of size the Hurricanes have on their front line. Nor will the 49ers see a backcourt as talented as Miami’s duo of Durand Scott and Shane Larkin. Charlotte was beaten down by Miami down low (having 12 shots blocked) and Larkin and Scott both had four steals, in addition to making 3 of 5 3-pointers between them.
-- With the 49ers losing for a first time, it will be interesting to see if coach Alan Major brings Chris Braswell (and maybe DeMario Mayfield) back into the starting lineup.
-- Commencement ceremonies at UNC Charlotte are Saturday. 49ers Mayfield was to fly to Charlotte from Miami on Saturday morning to attend them, then join the team later in the day at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (where the 49ers, believe it or not, are to change planes on their way to Atlanta and Sunday’s Kennesaw State game). Colby Lewis is also graduating, but isn’t attending today’s ceremonies.
-- Braswell and Miami center Reggie Johnson attended a big-man camp last summer in summer in Chicago put on by Nike and the New York Knicks’ Amare Stoudemire.
-- The crowd was sparse at the BankUnited Center. Miami doesn’t usually draw very well and the fact that students were leaving for the holidays didn’t help. The Hurricanes cheerleaders and dance team weren’t even there.

this is what happens when you play a top 100 team. 9-0 was result of scrub schedule
Miami is bottom half of the ACC...just saying
refs fault. 30 pt loss
The niners are the fraud that we thought they were. Give Major some credit for lining up a creme puff schedule that created the optical illusion of a good team and a good coach. The 49ers got blown out. 31pt beat down by a better than average Miami team. P.Henry totally disappeared as soon as some legit competition arrived. Hurry up Major and bring on some more "tissue soft" opponents so niner fans can start pounding their chest again about how good they are. Kenn ST and Radford are just what the doctor ordered.
Perria Henry is a low level college PG at best. Horrible shooter, average passer, gambles way to much on defense. This guy seems to only care about steals. Reaches all the time while guys drive right around him.Durand Scott destroyed him. Henry picked the wrong sport. Football is his game.
I see why Sherrill and Briscoe left Charlotte now. Alan Major's idiotic philosophy is to bench his best and most experienced players. Braswell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Charlotte first in A-10 to go 9-0 and first in the A-10 to get beat by 30.
Yeah...they'll bounce back. They've got Kennesaw St and Radford coming up....And to think I wasted two hours of my life watching this mess. Back in the day, this level of play was considered Division II basketball. Hal Wissel would be 9-1 with this schedule. Geez.
Typical idiotic posters come out of the woodwork when the Niners lose. Henry is a well above average point guard and I guarantee Charlotte will be in post-season play this year (NCAA or NIT) and BTW, Miami is definitely top 4-5 in the ACC again this season (4th last year) as will be FSU and Charlotte will beat FSU next week. Wait and see haters. Miami was just a bad match-up for Charlotte and it was a 10 pt. game with 9 minutes left. Charlotte just threw in the towel and Miami kept trying to run the score up. Thats OK, though.
Anonymous 9:34 said it best: "Typical idiotic posters come out of the woodwork when the Niners lose." YOU are that IDIOT. Niners will play in the NCAA's? Really? Ba ha ha ha.
They will be a below .500 team in conference and be lucky to get a bid to the CIT, which is something we would have turned our nose up at years ago. And that's due to a paper thin schedule.
Flame all you want, it doesn't matter. Some losses are necessary, even if they end up ugly. A coach would call this a learning experience. A wanna-be couch potato has been (or never was) calls this the end of the season.
Maybe they will end up with a crappy record. Or maybe they'll be dancing. None of us know, despite how wise and knowledgeable any of us think we are.
Let them play the games, you might be surprised. Personally I like the fact this years team has won all the games they should have won so far. I think I see where Major is going with this program, and it may not be this year that it manifests but I like the direction. I have been, to this point in the year, pleasantly surprised. And no I was not surprised by the outcome last night... Miami has beat a couple of very solid teams this year and I felt (no disrespect to Davidson intended) that this was going to be our first real test. Sometimes we fail tests, it's how we respond to the failure that matters.
Always remember, this is a scrappy young team that is getting floor burns and fighting for possessions while you throw barbs from your cushy couch or office chair. The louder you squawk, the more people are reminded that you're a nobody. Especially when you're too cowardly to even make up a name to post under.
Go Niners, damnit.
Yeah...you're no coward. You are brave enough to make up a name like.... Sickmanfreud! Ba ha ha. Floor burns...scrappy. You mean kinda like "Husselball, Wisselball, Hustleball"...whater? We played the same way in intramural ball...WHATEVER.
I'm not a Charlotte fan, but have been rooting for you from a distance. I've only seen a couple of games myself. But from my point of view, you guys are a well coached group of smart players and athletes. They seem to execute the game plan well. You're sets are based on your strengths.
Unfortunately, you are not tall enough inside nor have the outside shooters to be competitive with the Big Boys. I think you will have a 50-50 shot at the NIT.
Major's direction for this program seems to be schedule and OOC schedule of teams I know I can beat. That way no one will know how much I really suck until Feb.
46pts !!!!!! Charlotte either has the worst coach or the worst players my Canes have faced all season. Even lowly Florida Gulf Coast managed to scored 50pts on us.
Florida Gulf Coast.....You mean the team that beat Miami?
The fact that Major thinks J.T. Thompson is a viable option shows his intelligence !
Yes that Florida Gulf Coast. Even at 7-4 they were a much better coached team and had way more talent then the smoke and mirrors 9-0 Charlotte 49ers. I would put Jacksonville in that categorie too.
7:24....you are too stupid to be taken seriously....you will see.
Poor pitiful Charlotte, back in the toilet where they belong. Two more joke games before they get destroyed by FSU. Then Charlotte will be back where they belong in the bottom of the A10. Major is a joke of a coach and it's just a matter of time before he and his team of thugs are gone.
I don't know which is worse: watching the pathetic UNCC players that no real school would want, or watching that bumbling moron of a "coach" try to figure out how to stay within 30 of a half decent team. Sad really.
One good thing for Charlotte: this city cares so little about them that almost nobody will notice this loss (just like nobody noticed those garbage wins).
Charlotte continued to show their true colors today. Tied at the half with something called Kennisaw State? Absolutely pitiful. One of the worst teams in the country at 1-8, and Major had to sweat it out to the end. No excuse for that garbage.
Where was all of these comments when Charlotte was winning. Everybody had their mouths shut. From day one Majors and his crew got nothing but negatcie comments. First, it was nonobody would come to Charlotte. Then it was Charlotte was a losing team. Despite the first year they only had eight or nine people on the bench. This team is a good team and will get better as the seaons goes on. The fact that they are ten and one is good considering the fact that some of you thought that they would not have made it this far. To Anon:10:01Am, as far as nobody caring for Charlotte, you are dead wrong on this one. If that was the case you would not be commenting here. Maybe you should think before commenting.
I'm sorry, who cares what a bunch of Haters think about our school. The last time I checked most of the other schools around played a soft schedule. North Carolina played one util they met Indians and lost over 20 pts. Charlotte played against a tough Miami team and lost. In case you Morons haven't realzied this yet, teams have bad nights and they have good nights. The fact that Majors has been winning games with his sophomores and freshmen is a good thing. These will be the guys who will lead next year. It gives them some experience and help make them better players next year. Also, it gives Majors an opportunity to see where the weaknesses are and to improve on that. Charlotte is having a good year and it is time the alumni, students, school employees, fans, and supporters get behind the team.
