Observations from La Salle game

Observations from the 49ers' 74-65 victory against La Salle on Wednesday:

-- Defense did it again for the 49ers, as they opened their Atlantic 10 season with a win. Charlotte (13-2, 1-0) held the Explorers to 32.5 percent shooting, better than their Atlantic 10-leading 36.8 percent entering the game. The 49ers also held down La Salle's 3-point shooters -- especially Ramon Galloway -- to a 4 of 29 night. Galloway, the league's leading scorer, had 23 on 7-of-29 shooting (3 of 14 from 3-point range). La Salle had entered the game ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in 3-point percentage (38.4)

-- Point guard Pierria Henry is getting more dangerous as an offensive threat as he drives the lane and puts up short, floating jumpers or finds his way free for a layup. But he also acknowledged after the game that he needs to work on his decision making in the face of pressure (he had six turnovers).

-- Charlotte’s J.T. Thompson and La Salle’s Tyrone Garland were teammates at Virginia Tech before they both transferred. They never actually played together because Thompson missed the 2010-11 and ’11-12 seasons with knee injuries.

-- The 49ers’ Terrence Williams has been mired in a shooting slump. But he makes up for it with hustle plays – he dove for a loose ball that a La Salle player seemed sure to get in the first half, turning the ball over to Charlotte.

-- Charlotte’s E. Victor Nickerson wore pinkish-orange shoes, not exactly in the 49ers’ color scheme.

-- The 49ers and Explorers had a common opponent in the nonconference season: Miami. The Hurricanes handled Charlotte 77-46 and beat La Salle 76-59 after leading by six points at halftime.

-- The 49ers' now 13-2 record still doesn't seem to have caught the fancy of the Charlotte area. A crowd of 5,754 (slightly higher than Charlotte's average of 5,584 entering the game and which included a strong student presence) watched Wednesday's game. Charlotte ranks sixth in home attendance in the Atlantic 10 (Dayton leads at 12,243).

-- The last time Charlotte was 13-2 was 1994-95. The 49ers went on to win the Metro Conference title in their final season in that league.

Good win for the Niners. The A10 is going to be tough and it is nice to start of 1-0 instead of 0-1.

a good start. now lets see what we do on the road. Rhode Island has been the little shop of horrors for us. I believe we are 1-3 at URI. We are due.

How nice it is to go into Halton and actually watch basketball being played, instead of the nonsense we've been subjected to for the past few seasons ! Great group of guys to watch ! GO NINERS !

FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!

The observer could help fill seats by actually covering this team.

I guess Mike P would rather provide more in depth analysis of good ol roy's preferred breakfast fruit.

To Jeff (above), by nonsense do you mean Major's 23-37 mark the past 2 years or something else?

Not Anonymous said...

Probably means the past 4 or 5 seasons.

Anonymous said...

Probably meant since March 2005.

University of North Carolina at charlotte has played NO one and the a-10 sucks..Can't wait for them to play Temple or Xaivier(as bad as they are)...They beat UNC-A in overtime and should have lost..Real fans of basketball knows this team sucks along with their coach and AD..the record is an illusion made by Judy Rose to validate her choice for this Major disappointment of a coach. When Lutz was at UNCC, they were forced and wanted to play ACC, Big 10, SEC schools for their nonconference and it made them ready for conference. Judy Rose is a joke and so are the Niners!

to Anon.326. why don't you give it a rest. Majors and crew has played the same number of "Big Tims" colleges as Lutz. Let me refresh your memory. You act as though Charlotte played North carolina every nigh. They played the MEAC conference mostly; followed by some of the other smaller conferences. Also, Lutz was not that successful against Xavier or Dayton either. This team is getting better and they proved it last night by beating LaSalle (And by the way, Charlotte went into this as the underdog). They came out aggressive and played aggressive. They went with a lighter non-confernece schedule because they had a tougher" conference season. Why would you bang up your players in the conference seaon only to lose in the conference season. UNC-Grtesnboro played a tough scheule and look where it got them; 3 games and a 40 point to Davidson. You make no sense and you sound foolish. Give credit where credit is due.

@3:02
Please crawl back into your hole, where you will not be tortured with reports of Niner wins. It must suck to be so filled with hatred and wanting failure for Charlotte.
Please post your man love for Lutz somewhere else. I bet he has a Facebook account.

Lutz never had a schedule this easy. We still don't know how good we are because of the fluff scheduling job. Major needs to take us back to post season this year or it's time for a new coach.

I'm glad to see the Observer has improved its coverage of UNCC. Let's hope the better coverage continues once the Niners become a regular in Postseason play again.

I look forward to the day 3:02's jersey is taken down. Maybe Pat Kelsey will wear it next time he goes on a gun control rant...

The Observer coverage of the game was great. Front page of sports section with a great large picture of Darion Clark looking like a badass. I was a pleasantly surprised.

Postseason?????? Are you serious?? The only postseason bball UNCc will play is conf. tourn. and then a little open gym time...They are garbage and yes Lutzs' teams played tough schedules..And please, please, please don't EVER say the A-10 is a tough conference...Its a JOKE conference just like UNCc is...who do they play next West Charlotte?? Now that would be a game...I guarantee more fans would come to out and fill that pathetic arena out then...rooting on the lions to a victory...UNCc sucks!

More brainpower than a jackass????You have got to be kidding!! This poster would lose that contest going away. The spectacle would fill his pathetic little abode in mom's basement. Go jackass! This poster SUCKS!

To Anon 11:54AM. If the A-10 is such a joke then how did Butler manage to put the smackdown on North Carolina or knock off the number one team in the country, Indiana. Unless of course, the ACC and Big Ten are jokes too. Maybe you should get your facts straight before running off at the mouth. Oh, and by the way, your mama sucks.

One of the more recent bracketology predictions has the ACC getting only 3 teams into the dance and the A10 getting 5 teams into the dance. One of the A10 teams is Charlotte. UNC-Chapel Hill is not one of the 3 ACC teams. Anyone stating the A10 is no good has absolutely no idea what they are talking about.
