49ers pick up former Gamecock

The Charlotte 49ers football team has picked up an impressive transfer -- wide receiver/defensive back Martay Mattox of East Mississippi Community College. Mattox originally signed with South Carolina out of high school.

Mattox (6-2, 180) caught 43 passes for 583 yards and six touchdowns last season for East Mississippi.

Mattox was one of the top high school quarterbacks in the country in Athens, Ga., but South Carolina had plans for him as a defensive back when he signed with the Gamecocks in 2011. Mattox enrolled at USC in January 2011 and took part in spring practice.

He didn't play in 2011 and was redshirted before he left the program at the end of the season.

He's not expected to play quarterback at Charlotte, and will likely be either a receiver or defensive back.

HUGE pickup! SC's QB situation was already overcrowded when he decided to transfer (hence why they wanted to switch him), so this is big!

Looking forward to reading the trolls trying to spin this one!

Will he be eligible right away or will he sit out a year?

GO NINERS!!!

I would guess he would be eligible immediately since initially we will be a I-AA (FCS) school.

Even though I am a Wolfpack grad and fan I hope the 49ers build a successful program. It would be fun and interesting to have big time college football in town. I will definitely be going to some game.

Despite the plan for him to not to be QB, this opens some trick play opportunities should he be put at WR.

How bout dem Niners. We just get a committment from one of the top quarterbacks in his class, and he picked us over SEC teams. We gonna be competing in BCS games year 1. Mark it down. Who else did he pick us over besides USC. I figure they offered him again since he was already there. What was he ranked in his class. Please don't be tellin me you exagerating his rankings. I get all kinds of jacked up when we so good at QB that one of the TOP recruits in the country at that position can't even compete for our QB spot.

Mattay was always recruited as a DB for USC, but was told he'd be given opportunities to play wildcat at the QB position, similar to how they recruited Stephon Gilmore. He was red-shirted, and apparently didn't feel he should've been, so he transferred out of the program. USC didn't push him out, it was more he felt he'd have better opportunities elsewhere...

I hope nothing but the best for Martay with the 49ers!

Martay was not highly ranked as a QB but was well regarded as an "athlete." I wish he would have stayed at USC as a DB since he is talented, fast and has good "measurables." I think he made a mistake by being inpatient and transferring away since he would have most likely played a lot this past season.

Good luck to him and to your program. He is a good player who should be able to contribute to your program significantly.

By the way, The USC did not reoffer him in this cycle.

Wow, you mad bro? Sound like a Wal-Mart Gamecock fan. The guy was the 27th ranked QB in his class and a 3 star recruit, not too shabby. Considering Charlotte, a FCS program, 10+ 2 and 3 star guys, they are loading up well.
