Charlotte softball fighting off elimination

The Charlotte 49ers softball team, after dropping a 2-0 decision to nationally ranked Massachusetts Friday in the Atlantic 10 tournament, will attempt to stave off elimination facing Saint Joseph's at noon Saturday in the loser's bracket final at Fordham's Bahosky Field.

The 49ers (33-15) kept the game with UMass (37-8) scoreless through five innings, but back to back home runs in the sixth gave UMass the win.

In the circle, former Butler High standout Emily Jeffery (23-9) took the loss for Charlotte, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight in six innings. Brandice Balschmiter (30-4) picked up the victory for UMass with a complete game, three-hit shutout.
