Observations from Saturday's loss to Richmond

-Charlotte has had its best free throw shooting team in coach Bobby Lutz’s 12 seasons this season (73.6 percent) but when the 49ers had a chance to seal a win Saturday from the line in regulation, they came up short, making four-of-eight in the final two minutes, 32 seconds of the second half.

-Prior to the game, Charlotte recognized its senior class of Ian Andersen, DiJuan Harris and RaShad Coleman as well as Charles Dewhurst, who is graduating in May but forgoing his final season of eligibility to pursue graduate studies. Andersen also got to start for the first time this season and provided a bonus for the 49ers, scoring 12 first-half points on four 3-pointers.

-When Richmond’s Josh Duinker went to the line for a pair of free throws late in the first half, the Charlotte students broke out in a chant of “U-S-A, U-S-A.” Why? They had done their homework, apparently. Duinker hails from Sydney, Australia.

-If you couldn’t tell students were on spring break, the fact only six people comprised the pep band gave it away.

Most of the band was in Maryland for the A-10 women's tournament.

I've lived in Charlotte for 13 years and watching this slow collapse of the 49ers over the past 3 weeks has been one of the most disheartening things I've seen in sports. Let's hope they can pull it together for the first round A-10 tourney game in Halton.

Wow! Chanting U-S-A at an Australian? Really? Way to be creative. That's like him going to any class at UNCC and chanting Gaston County. Kind of like storming the court should be done on certain occasions, chanting should only be done if either you team is better, or your school is better. Neither is the case here.

that was probably one of the dumbest comments I've ever read. I don't even know where to begin.

Sending the pep band to Maryland for a women's game instead of keeping them hom for a men's game was pretty stupid. Almost as stupid as the commentor that criticized Charlotte students and mentioned Gaston County in his post.

yeah and who was the 50 yr. old guy playing in the band on the trombone? I also noticed the band leader trying to play the flute to make ends meet for the band.

When you are up by three with 12 seconds left... why not foul?

Well, not all of the band went to the women's A10 tournament, the ones who stayed behind were supposed to play the Richmond game, but of course most of those are our band members that care more about their spring break than their band obligations. Believe me, the band will show for the first round A10 game on Tuesday night. And.... saying that sending the band to a tournament vs. keeping them home for a regular season game is stupid, in my opinion. Our women's team has been playing much better than the men as of late, but no one seems to even care about them. If our men won the A10, this school would go nuts. But when the ladies won last year, it seems like most Charlotte "fans" didn't even know about it...

And the older dude playing the valve trombone is actually a member of the on-site medical staff for games, I guess he figured he'd help out the band as best he could since most of us were in Maryland.

You may want to rethink that comment. Sending the band to the women's A-10 tournament was stupid how? Because we support our womens basketball team as well as the mens.

I would normally ask why we are talking about the band in march...but after the last 6 weeks I would rather talk about the band...
