Charlotte 49ers news, notes

The 49ers baseball team plays a pair of ACC teams this week before heading to George Washington for an Atlantic 10 weekend series.

Charlotte faces Duke (15-26) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Hayes Stadium, then travels to N.C. State (26-12) on Wednesday. The 49ers will continue on to Washington after playing the Wolfpack for their three-game series with the Colonials, which begins Friday.

The 49ers (17-21, 5-9 Atlantic 10) split last weekend's series with Saint Joseph's (Sunday's game was rained out and won't be re-scheduled), so they continue to face an uphill climb to qualify for the six-team Atlantic 10 tournament. Charlotte is in 10th place and three games out of sixth. The 49ers have time to make up for it -- with two league series at home (vs. Saint Louis and St. Bonaventure) remaining after George Washington.

The banged-up 49ers got two players back against Saint Joseph's -- leading hitter Shane Brown returned to the lineup with four hits on Friday and utility player Brad Elwood came back with two outfield assists in one game (the fourth player in school history to do that).

Also, pitcher Joe Yermal beat the Hawks on Saturday for his 29th career victory, tying Tim Collie for second on the 49ers' all-time list.

-- Next up for Charlotte's golf team are the Atlantic 10 championships this weekend in Coral Springs, Fla. The 49ers have won every league championship since joining the A-10 in 2006. Charlotte finished fourth in its two more recent tournaments, the Irish Creek Collegiate in Kannapolis and the Hawkeye at Iowa City, Iowa. Freshman Raoul Menard was also named the A-10's most recent rookie of the week.

-- Charlotte's men's basketball team will open play in the Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 22 against Texas State. The 49ers will then play either Loyola Marymount or Oral Roberts the next day. The tournament's other bracket features Belmont, Alaska-Anchorage, UC Riverside and Northeastern.

We SHOULD be able to beat Texas State in basketball...but then again, who knows...the baseball team is not very good this year.

Anonymous said...

They have a baseball team with a losing record...who knew? Lol...

Anonymous said...

Wow. What happened to the Great Alaska Shootout? I honestly don't see who the team to beat is.

Anonymous said...

2:20pm, ask NC State and Arkansas who Charlotte is since we've beaten both in the NCAA tourney in recent years or UNC-CH, S. Carolina or Clemson since we've beaten their Top 10 ranked teams in recent years as well.

Any conference news? I have gotten more Charlotte 49ers news from the San Antonio paper than Charlotte Observer. Pitiful but not surprising. How does the editor still have a job ?

Anonymous said...

The CHARLOTTE Observer is a regional paper and rarely covers UNC CHARLOTTE Athletics. Thanks for the San Antonio paper for picking up the slack.

Anonymous said...

Any conference news at this point would be rumor. I'm sure the Observer will hop right on it when an announcement is made. May even make it into the print edition!

To answer your question, Belmont is the team to beat. Oral Roberts has the next best team/program. Risky move for Major becasue if they lose all three...just saying!

UNC 49er I'm so glad you could take a break from fucking you mom to join us in this blog. Your a valuable person. Really.

Good point. There is only one Carolina.

Carolina 49ers has a nice ring to it.

^^^^
How right you are! Go Gamecocks and 49ers.

Yes, we have beaten most of the ACC schools in recent years, even the ones ranked in the top 5 in the country. You would never know it though, not if you live in Charlotte. We beac UNC-chapel hill one year and made top stories (in print) in every paper in the state EXCEPT the Charlotte Observer.

Some of you UNCC fans are delusional. UNCC has never beaen an ACC team in baseball or any other sport. I would have read about it in the Observer if they had. It would be great if UNCC could compete with the ACC and beat them some times. I would probably pull for them if they did.

@6:49 p.m
That's a good one! Unless your serious,of course.

From this blog, dumbass: Charlotte, which was runner-up in the College Cup last season, is 5-3-1 against the ACC since 2009

Anon 5:31, you touched on the problem when trying to prove your point. You had to use a BLOG to prove your point. A BLOG, and not a printed version and not even in the "regular on-line stories" in the Observer. That's the reason 49ers do not get respect. The Observer usually hides the Niners' accomplishments while publicizing their screw-ups.

Judy Rose bless her pea pickin little heart is clearly guilty of GENDER BIGOTRY in the 1st degree.
Her fav show is prob Ellen.

Such lies about the "confusion" between UNCC and UNCCH that she took it upon herself to lie and change the sports dept only she was in charge of although no other dept uses the 49ers name thats been around since 1965 and UNCC inception into the UNC system.

Rose is a GENDER BIGOT

She wanted the feminine "queen"
name only on something

Is she aware King George III owned all the land in the Carolinas that is Latin for King Charles? It was called a "KINGS GRANT". She prob flunked history.

CHANGE IT BACK YOU GENDER BIGOT !!!!

UNCC DOES NOT NEED A GENDER BIGOT RUNNING THE AD

KING TRUMPS QUEEN

RENAME THE WHOLE JOINT AS THE "KING CITY" IF YOU WANT TO AVOID CONFUSION

CHANGE IT TO "CAROLINA CITY"

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BE 100% PC CHANGE IT TO "GEORGE AND CHARLOTTE CITY"

"THE KING AND QUEEN CITY"

"CAPTAIN JACK CITY" SOUNDS BETTER THOUGH AND MORE AMERICAN

The Great Alaskan Shoot Out lost it's television coverage and therefore lacked serious $$ in attracting top level teams. They did announce yesterday that they have a new contract with CBS Sports Network so I'm hoping for better teams in the years to come!

I'm happy that the 49ers will be making their way up North. I spent much of my youth running amuck around that campus (used to live in College Downs) and saw plenty of 49er bball & soccer growing up. So the 49ers will always have a special place in my heart. I hope they enjoy the 49th state! Good luck!
