Is Virginia Tech transfer headed to Charlotte 49ers?

Are the Charlotte 49ers on the verge of bringing in Virginia Tech-transfer J.T. Thompson?

If they are, Thompson will need to be granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA to play for the 49ers.

A source close to Thompson -- a 6-foot-6 forward -- says he is enrolled at summer school at UNCC. 49ers officials can't comment on prospective players until they have signed with the school.

Thompson, who is from Monroe, has graduated from Virginia Tech and would wrap up an injury-plagued career with the 49ers. After playing three seasons for Hokies, during which he averaged 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds, he missed the 2010-11 and '11-12 seasons with injuries to both knees.

Last season was his fifth at Virginia Tech, so he would need a special injury waiver from the NCAA to play one more season at Charlotte.

Thompson was granted a release from Virginia Tech in March and said at the time he wanted to play at a school in North Carolina so he could be nearer his daughter. Thompson began his high school career at Marshville Forest Hills and finished at Hope Christian Academy in Kings Mountain.

He played in 92 games and started 17 in his three-year career at Virginia Tech. He tore the ACL in his left knee before the 2010-11 season and missed the entire year. He then tore his right ACL before the 2011-12 season and didn't play. Thompson also missed the first 10 games of his sophomore season after surgery for an inguinal hernia.

The addition of Thompson would round out Charlotte's roster for the 2012-13 season. The 49ers have also added freshman forwards Darion Clark and Willie Clayton and guards Shawn Lester, Denzel Ingram and Ivan Benkovic.

Three starters return for the 49ers, who went 13-17 last season -- center Chris Braswell, forward DeMario Mayfield and point guard Pierria Henry. Two other rotation players, wings Terrence Williams and E. Victor Nickerson, are also back.

-- Charlotte's Shane Brown was named to the Atlantic 10 all-conference baseball first team and Shane Basen made the second team. Brown hit .365 and won the league's batting title. Outfielder Leland Clemmons made the league's all-rookie team, while Basen and DH Corbin Shive made the A-10 all-academic team.

It's Willie Clayton not Willie Cooper....

Why would we want damaged goods. Haven't we had enough players injured in the past few years. If Major wants to keep his job, he needs those that can actually contribute on the court.

Cut the crap idiot. Its UNCC
49ers. Stop looking so stupid.

Richardson and McColl are lending their names giving millions to UNCC 49ers sports programs but that can dry up in a sec. Word is both being bombarded from UNCC alum bitching about the idiot Rose name change and demand it be reversed to the correct UNCC 49ers.

They wont get away with it although clearly they are trying to ditch not only the name but the 80k alumi before 2002 when dictator Rose changed it without consulting anyone.

Rose's motto "Its My Way Or The Highway" was the same as Attila The Hun and Hitler.
Time for Rose to take a hike ...

You "name change" people need to calm down. It's the Charlotte 49ers, and that's the way the younger alumni and current students want it.

We're not Chapel Hill's little cousin and we don't want to be thought of or treated as such. We're Charlotte's university -- and that's how I'd rather be remembered.

OK Psycho - Nobody is bombarding anything but you bombarding this blog. Youve been at this for years and its gonna get you no where. This blog is for sports people. Youre obviously an academic type. Some sort of history major. Sports people are the ones that have picked on you youre entire life.

If you want to get the name changed - Start an online petition! Thats what we sports people did when we wanted football - and it worked. Thats what sports fans are doing to change the name of the Charlotte Bobcats to Charlotte Hornets and its gotten alot of attention.
I bet you couldnt get more than a few dozen signatures on a UNCC 49ers petition.
Try it - I dare you!

Whether Thompson plays for us or not, this is the year we see if Major is the long-term answer as coach. There are only 2 Lutz recruits left on the roster and a bunch of young guys who (on paper at least) show promise. If we make the postseason we'll know that Major can recruit and coach. I hope that is the case. GO NINERS!!!!!!!

I graduated there in 1977, so I definitely qualify as an older 49er, and I love the name change to Charlotte. I am really getting tired of the Rose haters, and I suspect that many of you who prefer the UNCC name are actually UNC-CH fans who just want to belittle any school that dares to challenge the Tarheels in any way.

Thompson is not ACC material...he would be a great additional to the 49er's! They need all the help they can get since they finished at the bottom of a bad conference. Bawahahahaha!!!

Haters gonna hate.

Love the moron who thinks the A10 is a bad conference. They received one less bid than ACC last year. I guess the ACC is an average conference then.

To anon @ 12:40 - the schollie would have gone unused this season. Thompson will only have one year of availability if he is granted the waiver. His presence on the team will provide leadership and experience to a group of sophmores and freshmen. Very sound decision by Major.

You might want to try knowing about something before running off at the mouth.

UNCC couldn't challenge any team in the ACC PERIOD! UNCC is weak and has been weak for a very long time. They are nothing without Bobby Lutz! Just sayin'

Hey Bruce go jerk off to your ACC boys somewhere else.

They beat GT in '10-'11. Wanna keep running your mouth without facts?

I am one of those that wants to see Rose leave because of her leadership style or lack there of. However, I do llike the school being called Charlotte for sporting purposes (my preference is University of Charlotte), because I feel that separates us from the UNC-Cheaters & Charlotte Bobcats but that is just an opinion (and opinions are like armpits everyone has one and most of them stink).

The name of the school it's self has not changed. It's just for sporting purposes. I feel there are plenty of legitiment reasons to want to see Judy go, but for me it's not over the name. I also want to see Major go if he doesn't get Charlotte into at least 6th place in the conference this year. For those who feel "Charlotte" is too long to spell just use "Clt" it works at the airport.

It's a reflection of the terrible quality of the Charlotte Observer that every story about the college turns into garbage in the comments section. It's a no class paper with no class readers.

For all the weakling runts and psychopath homos and pedos who never played sports or ever could play the name is and always has been UNCC 49ers.

What did Rose play? Slow pitch softball? Girls basketball? Did she even play college ball at all with the (Winthrop) Rock Hill Eagles?

Sounds like she was a trainer or watergirl weakling for Rock Hill Eagles and given a fluff job title 9 style affirmative action only because shes female.

Change the name back to UNCC 49ers like 80,000 alumni demand and she will get some slack cut. Majority rules. Div One is laughing at her and UNCC.

Sports people do not you care about the weakling runts or psychos!
We have shunned you and mocked you your entire life! Judy laughs at you! Judy has more power in her finger than you ever can sitting behind your keyboard. Bombard us with emails - were shaking in our boots - HAHA!
Go read a history book about Queen Charlotte and King George! They killed off weaklings like you but apparently they didnt kill enough. Your family should have been exterminated in the 1700s.
This country and university are about progress! The weak, even when in the majority, will be persecuted and hopefully one day stomped out of society.
As you history major dorks sit in your parents basement, the strong gather in large office buildings and plan your continued torment. We will be watching the CHARLOTTE 49ERS progress from high above your heads in our black helicopters!

GO NINERS!!!!

UNCC is a complete joke! Bawhahahahahah!!!

Oh Bruce/Lou/LolTroll... so much time on your hands, so little to contribute to society.

6:53 AM is Tim Collie. He has a hugh personal grudge thing going on with Judy Rose. She can't spit without Collie being critical. It goes back to him not getting hired at Charlotte.

I'm confused. I thought the reason K.J. Sherrill was chased away was because he had a damaged knee, even though he could still play last year. Then we were told the coaching staff wanted FOUR YEAR players to fill the roster. Then we stole a recruit from basketball powerhouse High Point and now we may sign this player.

I'm glad we signed this player to complete our roster and I wish him luck. If it was Bobby's staff that signed him, we would hear nothing but criticism from some of the Forty Niner fans' "expertise basketball knowledge', but they seem to think our current staff will take us to the Final Four within 2 years.

Has Majors contract been renewed? How can he recruit 4 year players without a contract extension?! We cant make him a lame duck!! He needs 5 years in CUSA to prove what he can do!

WTF?

Sounds like the same hick country dumb waterboy perv talking to his idiot self on all boards 24/7 posting 99% of all posts under 500 dif names all hrs of the day and night. Does he not have a closer rural newsrag to display his psychopathic insanity? Useless scab off the buttocks of humanity who barely made it out high school much less went to college.
Romney will be arresting these freeloading douchbags forcing them to do manual labor on the roads to pay their debt to society.
These know nothings still living off mommy and daddy at age 30 are a detriment to humanity.

GET A JOB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
