The Charlotte 49ers' 2012-2013 nonconference men's basketball schedule will include eight home games, two games against ACC foes, and three games in the Great Alaska Shootout.
The 49ers open the season with three straight home games, starting Nov. 9 against Charleston Southern, Nov. 13 against Georgia Southern and Nov. 17 against Lamar.
Charlotte will play three games in the Great Alaska Shootout Nov. 22-24, opening with Texas State on Nov. 22.
East Carolina will visit Halton Arena on Dec. 1 and travel to Mecklenburg County rival Davidson on Dec. 5. The 49ers will play at Miami (Fla.) on Nov. 14 and host Florida State at Time Warner Cable Arena on Dec. 22.
Charlotte will conclude its nonconference schedule on Jan. 2, hosting UNC Asheville.

Allen goal gives 49ers 2OT victory
Thomas Allen's goal in the second overtime gave the 49ers fifth-ranked men's soccer team a 1-0 victory against No. 14 Coastal Carolina on Monday at Transamerica Field.
Allen's goal, off a Tyler Gibson corner kick at the game's 101:45 mark, raises Charlotte's record to 2-0. Coastal falls to 1-1.
The Chanticleers played a man down for much of the game after Jhamie Hyde was sent off in the first half. Charlotte outshot Coastal 16-8.
Charlotte plays again Friday against Alabama-Birmingham at Transamerica Field.
Observations from first Charlotte 49ers football practice
Observations from the 49ers' first official football practice on Monday afternoon:
-- Eighty-five players -- all dressed in green 49ers football T-shirts, black shorts and black socks -- showed up for what was a historical day for the program -- the first on-field practice for a team that doesn't play until Aug. 31, 2013. At exactly 3 p.m., strength and conditioning coach Jim Durning blew his whistle and the 49ers got to work on their new practice fields adjacent to the stadium.
-- The 50-minute practice started with agility and running drills. In 85-degree heat, the players wrapped up that portion of the practice with several 100-yard sprints. Then they split off into position groups, where coaches ran briefly ran them through some drills.
-- One player stood out in the conditioning drills. Daquan Lucas, a free safety from St. Stephen, S.C., did a full split as he warmed up, prompting one teammate to say he could never do that. Lucas then led the way in the sprints, getting encouragement from his position coach James Adams, who shouted, "Come on, 'Quan!"
-- Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jeff Mullen worked with his group -- Karsten Miller, Matt Johnson, Lee McNeil and Kyle Hoffman -- focusing on foot work and on passing. He likened the arc and distance of the players' passes to how he hits a golf ball. "I talk a lot in golf clubs," Mullen said, motioning with his arm how the ball might be thrown. "Two-iron, three iron, five iron ..."
-- Two players didn't work out because of injuries -- strong safety Danny Leonardi (ankle) and sophomore lineman Monte Golden (foot) ...Three transfers are on the roster -- sophomore offensive tackle Daniel Book (Albany), sophomore offensive tackle Peter Fields (Findlay, Ohio) and junior nose tackle Duke Mosby (Wake Forest). Mosby played in five games last season for the Deacons before being dismissed from the team for breaking undisclosed team rules. Fields played in nine games last season for Division II Findlay ... The 49ers will continue with conditioning drills for three weeks before going into a more traditional mode of practice in September ... The turf in the stadium is nearly completely installed. The outside of the field is ringed with gold and the end zones are black.

Charlotte 49ers get stern soccer test Monday
The 49ers' fifth-ranked men's soccer team, fresh off a dramatic victory in its season opener Saturday, faces a stern test Monday when 14th-ranked Coastal Carolina comes to Transamerica Field for a 7 p.m. game.
The Chanticleers won their season opener 4-0 Friday against Longwood. They boast one of the country's top players in senior striker Ashton Bennett, who scored two goals against Longwood. Bennett led the nation in goals (23) and points (53) last season.
Charlotte beat Coastal 2-1 last season. The Chanticleers made it to the NCAA tournament last season, losing to eventual national champion North Carolina in the second round.
Bennett and Charlotte's Aidan Kirkbride were both named to College Soccer News' team of the week. Kirkbride scored both the 49ers' goals in a 2-1 double-overtime victory against Denver, the first coming with four seconds left in regulation.
Soccer America's poll for this week hasn't been released yet, but the 49ers are ranked third in the College Soccer News poll and Coastal is 10th.

49ers win frantic opener
Aiden Kirkbride's two goals helped give the fifth-ranked Charlotte 49ers an unlikely 2-1 men's soccer victory in double overtime against Denver on Saturday at Transamerica Field.
Kirkbride's header with 6:51 left in the second overtime capped a frantic comeback by Charlotte (1-0). Kirkbride's other goal came with four seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Denver (0-1) had taken the lead 1-0 on a goal by Josh Wren in the 32nd minute.
The 49ers outshot Denver 24-3 and had 13 corner kicks to the Pioneers' 1.
Charlotte plays again on Monday against Coastal Carolina at Transamerica Field.
Charlotte 49ers' women's soccer team improves to 2-0
The 49ers' women's soccer team won their second consecutive game Friday night, beating Western Carolina 1-0 on a goal by Sara Trexler.
Trexler's goal came in the 16th minute and helped Charlotte win its home opener and improve to 2-0 on the season. Charlotte faces seventh-ranked Wake Forest (1-1-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Transamerica Field. The Deacons will be the highest-ranked opponent ever to play at Transamerica Field.
"It was very important to keep the winning momentum going," coach John Cullen said of Friday's victory against the Catamounts (0-2). "It is always nice to start off with another victory, in front of your own fans. They pulled us through tonight, at times, I thought. We were a little off the pace, but we'll take the W."

Big soccer weekend for 49ers
The Charlotte 49ers' men's and women's soccer teams play home games this weekend, while the volleyball team opens its season on the road Friday at the East Carolina Classic.
-- The fifth-ranked men's soccer team opens its season Saturday at 7 p.m. at Transamerica Field against Denver. Charlotte (16-5-4 last season) has eight starters back from last season's team that made it all the way to the championship game of the College Cup. The 49ers get a stern test on Monday when they host Coastal Carolina, which is also ranked in most preseason national polls.
-- The 49ers' women, who started their season with a 2-1 victory at College of Charleston, are home Friday to Western Carolina (0-1) at 7 p.m. and Sunday to seventh-ranked Wake Forest (1-0-1) at 1 p.m. The Deacons,who are home to UNC Greensboro on Friday, started their season last week with a victory against
Richmond and a tie against UNC Wilmington. The Deacons are without all-American striker Katie Stengel for a while: she is playing for the United States in the U20 World Cup in Japan.
-- Charlotte's volleyball team plays Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 4 p.m. in the ECU Classic, followed by matches Saturday against Campbell (11 a.m.) and East Carolina (7 p.m.). The 49ers are led by senior Bianca Rouse, who needs 24 kills to reach the 1,000 mark for her career.

Major pleased with Bahamas trip
The 49ers men's basketball team wrapped up its two-game trip to the Bahamas last
week with two easy victories against two of the country's "all-star"
teams. 49ers coach Alan Major was happy with how things turned out, but warned
to take the opposition "with a grain of salt." Here are a few of
Major's observations from the trip:
-- Not having center Chris Braswell (broken foot) playing gave more playing
time to red-shirt freshman Mike Thorne, who averaged 11.5 rebounds in the two
games.
"Mike's a little green from not playing last season, so this was his
first real competition in a while," said Major. "He rebounded really
well."
-- The trip also gave Major a chance to look at the team's four freshmen.
"I liked the young guys' effort," he said. "(Denzel) Ingram ran
the team well and distributed. Willie (Clayton) and Darion (Clark) gave us
energy and rebounded. Ivan (Benkovic) had some stretches where he shot it
well."
-- Major said senior forward J.T. Thompson doesn’t appear to be favoring
either of the knees that he had surgery on before he transferred to Charlotte from Virginia
Tech. Thompson missed the past two seasons after injuring both his knees in the
preseason.
“His knees are fine,” said Major. “But he’s still getting his wind. But he’s
going to really help us. He’s got this sense of calmness on the floor that I
hope rubs off. He’s not out there feeling like he has to prove himself.”
-- Major said sophomore point guard Pierria Henry made his presence felt in
the first game, starting a rally by being disruptive on defense and hitting a
few jump shots.
“That’s the next step for Pierria and something he wasn’t that comfortable
with last season,” said Major. “He’s got to recognize when the shot is there
for him, then step up and knock it down.”
-- Sophomores Terrence Williams and E. Victor led the 49ers in scoring in
each game, something Major hopes happens often next season.
“They had good off-seasons and it showed,” Major said. “They’re rounding out
their games and that’s good to see.”

49ers go 2-0 in Bahamas
The 49ers' men's basketball team wrapped up its two-game preseason trip to the Bahamas with a 112-74 victory against the Bahamas Stingers on Thursday.
Charlotte, which won the first game of the trip on Tuesday, got 19 points from sophomore E. Victor Nickerson. Freshman center Mike Thorne had 14 points and 13 rebounds, while guard Colby Lewis added 16 points, freshman forward Willie Clayton had 16 and sophomore guard Terrence Williams had 15.
The 49ers were hot from outside, making 50 percent of their shots from 3-point range.

49ers open Bahamas trip with victory
The Charlotte 49ers won the opening game of a two-game trip to the Bahamas on Tuesday with an 86-63 victory against the two-time national champion Bahamas Giants.
Terrence Williams scored 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead Charlotte. Point guard Pierria Henry had 16 points and seven assists, while freshman forward Darion Clark added 11 points and five rebounds.
Freshman guard Denzel Ingram hit a 3-pointer from the quarter to start a third-quarter run by Charlotte. He then had a steal on the Bahamas' next possession that led to a dunk.
The 49ers led 35-25 at halftime and outrebounded the Giants by 15.
The 49ers play the second and final game of their Bahamas trip on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Charlotte 49ers' Gibson named to Hermann watch list
Charlotte 49ers junior midfielder Tyler Gibson has been named to the Hermann Trophy's watch list -- college soccer's equivalent of football's Heisman Trophy.
Gibson is a two-time all-Atlantic 10 selection and was the league's freshman of the year in 2010. He was also a freshman all-American that season.
The Hermann watch list will be narrowed to 15 players in late November.
The 49ers open their season Aug. 25 at home against Denver.
Freshman Lester ineligible
On the day that the Charlotte 49ers are departing on a five-day, two-game preseason trip to the Bahamas, the program announced Monday that freshman Shawn Lester is ineligible for the 2012-13 season.
Lester, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Mooresville High, will enroll at Charlotte, but won't be allowed to practice with the team.
"We are extremely excited that Shawn will be with us on campus this year," said 49ers coach Alan Major in a statement. "He will focus on academics and being a successful student here at Charlotte. In addition, he will use this year to improve his game in preparation for our return to Conference USA."

Charlotte 49ers field house named for Rose
The Charlotte 49ers' football field house was named in a most surprising fashion Saturday evening
The facility will be called the Judy W. Rose Field House, for the 49ers athletics director who was instrumental in bringing football to UNC Charlotte, where the sport begins I'm 2013.
The news came at a football-related reception Saturday at the home of Chancellor Phil Dubois. Dale Halton, a long-time university and athletic department benefactor, donated the naming-rights money for the field house, but she asked that Rose's name go on the building instead.
The announcement caught Rose by surprise on a day that goalposts were erected on McColl-Richardson Field (which will have turf installed next week).

Charlotte 49ers take over new field house
The Charlotte 49ers are ready to move into Halton Field House in their soon-to-be-completed football stadium. The N.C. State Construction Office approved beneficial occupancy of the field house Wednesday. The football staff is expected to move into offices in the 46,150-square-foot field house next week, with furniture and equipment for the locker room, weight room, training rooms and meeting rooms also coming next week. The 49ers’ natural-turf practice fields are also ready, one that is full-length field and one that is 80 yards. Construction of the 49ers’ stadium is expected to be completed in September. The 49ers will begin football in 2013.
There's a media tour of the field house scheduled for Friday, so we'll have full photo coverage then.
Charlotte 49ers 6th in A-10 preseason women's soccer poll
The Charlotte 49ers have been picked to finish sixth in the Atlantic 10's preseason women's soccer poll by the league's coaches. Charlotte (7-10-4 last season), opens its season Aug. 18 at College of Charleston.

FCS teams dropping from Charlotte 49ers' football schedules
As Charlotte moves to Conference USA in 2015, here are some more football scheduling changes involving games with Football Championship Series opponents:
-- The Georgia Southern and Furman series have been completely dropped, making it easier for Charlotte to schedule at least five FBS foes at home. Charlotte had games scheduled with Georgia Southern in 2014 (home) and '15 (away); with Furman in '14 (away) and '16 (home).
-- At Richmond's request, the Spiders are now off Charlotte's schedule in '16 and '17.
-- The Western Carolina home game in 2015 has been moved to a later year, which has yet to be determined. The 49ers will still play at Western in 2014.

Changes made to Charlotte 49ers football schedules
Charlotte announced a few changes to their football schedules in 2013 and '14.
The 49ers have dropped North Greenville and will instead play Division III Wesley (Del.) on Nov. 9, 2013. Wesley is ranked third in the Division III this year's preseason poll. Charlotte also moved a home game against Old Dominion from Sept. 21 to Nov. 16. That makes Sept. 21 Charlotte's bye week.
In 2014, Charlotte replaced a home game against Georgia Southern on Oct. 25 with Old Dominion. The 49ers will also play Wesley at home on Nov. 15 instead of Furman. Charlotte now has two bye weeks (Sept. 20 and Oct. 18) in 2014.
Some of these changes come as a result of Charlotte having to shuffle its still-incomplete 2015 schedule as it moves to the FBS and Conference USA that year. Charlotte will have to play at least five home games against FBS teams in 2015.

Charlotte 49ers picked to win A-10 men's soccer
The Charlotte 49ers are the Atlantic 10's men's soccer coaches' preseason pick to win the league championship.
Charlotte, which advanced to last season's NCAA championship game, was chosen ahead of Xavier (last season's conference tournament champ) and league newcomer Virginia Commonwealth. The rest of the predicted order of finish: 4. Saint Louis, 5. Fordham, 6. George Washington, T7. Butler, La Salle; 9. Duquesne. 10. Dayton, 11. Temple. 12. Rhode Island, 13. UMass. 14. Richmond. 15. St. Bonaventure. 16. Saint Joseph's.
The 49ers return eight starters from last year's 16-5-4 team and have a new coach in Kevin Langan. Practice begins Aug. 10, with an exhibition at Transamerica Field set for Aug. 18 against Gardner-Webb. The season opener is Aug. 25 against Denver. The 49ers will host the conference tournament Nov. 8-11.
