49ers land Porter Ridge star

49ers football coach Brad Lambert has said will need to quickly step up Charlotte's recruiting as they prepare for FBS football in 2015. It appears they're already doing that with a verbal commitment from Porter Ridge High's Chris Duffy.

Porter Ridge coach Blair Hardin said Duffy, a senior strong safety and running back, committed to the 49ers on Saturday and that he also had offers from East Carolina and Tennessee.

Duffy (5-11, 190 pounds) was an all-state defensive back last season as Porter Ridge went to the 4A state championship game. He's scored four touchdowns and is averaging nearly 8 yards per carry this season as a running back.

The 49ers are getting plenty of Porter Ridge players already: Guard Thomas LaBianca, quarterback Lee McNeill and kicker Stephen Muscarello are freshmen at Charlotte this year.

Good to see we are already competiting with FBS schools for recruits.

GO NINERS!

As you 49er fans will soon learn... Nothing is set in stone until the school receives the NLI. Once that happens your players will then have to get enrolled, which some players have difficulty doing.

Congrats but dont go celebrating just yet. Many many many times recruits flip committments on signing day.

Point....dont get hung up on individual recruits.

To Anon 12:52,

Most of our fans know verbals don't always stick no matter the sport (please see Michael Beasley). Point is that we are seeing recruits interested in the program that you wouldn't expect to happen until 2015.

Exactly 1:06.....I'd rather be getting verbals, than nothing right now.

No one recruited this guy nearly as much as UNCC did, not even close. He also has a unique situation to automatically play more since UNCC will have to build depth the next few years. UNCC should be happy he is interested, but not read too much in to this. Believe it when he actually arrives on campus, also would'nt expect to beat out programs like ECU or Tenn regularly.

anon 3:16, i would agree on not regularly beating out Tenn, but ECU? C'mon now, we will be in the same conference in 2 years (unless more realignment occurs)and we are in better location. Greenville or Charlotte? hmmmm, tough choice there.

Dumb. Anyone would be a fool to turn away from a real college experience in a real college town. Charlotte is a commuter school, always will be. If you disagree, you have never been to Athens, Clemson, Blacksburg, Gainesville, Greenville, etc.

Just because you are in the same conference you couldn't be more difference.
UNCC no college town, atmosphere, etc.

ECU, close to beach, 50,000 seat sold out stadium, football history, great social environment

Not even close, you get mugged or shot, or even run over if you are near UNCC campus.
UNCC hopes to have somehting special, ECU has for decades, show some respect. I was shocked when I went to a game in Greenville. Best college football atmosphere in NC hands down.

BWHAHAH!!!!

ECU is ten times better than UNCC.

Suitcase school!

Have you been to Greenville on a Saturday night. I've been to both and UNCC is joke.

This kid made a mistake.

The trolls here are no longer trolls. Now they're just assholes.

Don't know how recruiting news devolves into a discussion of college life at ECU and Charlotte. Whoever called UNC Charlotte a suitcase college is living in the way far past. As to the "college experience", I doubt that the students at the two schools differ all that much as a whole. Whatever "experience" you can get on one campus, I'm sure you can get on the other.
Ecu may kick Charlotte's butt in football in the beginning, but judging by the results in other sports, that won't last.

I've been to ECU......it ain't all that......Go Niners!

I love dumb ECU fans who think Greenville is such a great place. It's a pit. Always has been and always will be. Eastern NC is a barren wasteland of poverty and rednecks, sprinkled with a handful of rich blue blood southern Democrats that still think they rule the world (and by the way, they are rednecks too). ECU has a decent football team every few years and we all have to hear about you being the best program in the state of.....NC. I was a student athlete at Charlotte. We consistently beat ECU in all sports. We will not be competitive the first couple of years in football, but that will change. For all you ECU fans...power is shifting. NC is tired of pig farmers and rednecks acting like they own the joint. Charlotte is a world class city - the only one in NC. If you want to be an ignorant lush, go to EZU. If you want to be a productive member of society, go to Charlotte.

There is a reason everyone calls the school "EZU". There is also a reason most people laugh at EZU and give it no respect. The reasons are the same.

State fan says: Good get for the 49ers. I thought they would start off by taking recruits away from App State and other small colleges, but they jumped right in and started taking recruits away from FBS schools.

By the way. ECU is a JOKE.

Greenville is a piece of crap, but so is the north part of Charlotte. Doesn't mean the school isn't fun though. UNCC has no room to make of ECU for academics. UNCC is every bit the joke ECU is. I would guess that ECU has fewer kids out of community college than UNCC does. From what I understand UNCC is usually a fallback for people who apply to ECU.

9:23 you are wrong..Admission standards are tougher at Charlotte than ECU. Also, my daughter just picked Charlotte over ECU and several others in the region.

Anonymous said...

Standards are equally low at both schools. People just pick ECU because it doesn't feel like a glorified community college.

Some people in the comments are real mad. Real, real mad.

Bottom line, people can talk smack about Charlotte, but who would've ever thought that any player would choose Charlotte over Tenn. (ECU makes sense). Regardless if this guy actually honors his word, it just shows you that the program is already getting respectable players attention. GO NINERS!

ECU like Appy, is simply an adult day care facility. They are both trade schools. If you really want to know with school is better look at post grad salary info. Now most ECU fans will say "but you have non traditional students do that's why!". Well Harvard also has a higher post grad salary than ECU. Does Harvard also have a ton of non traditional students? :-/ Truth hurts

Anonymous said...

That makes no sense.

App, ECU, and UNCC...It's like picking the tallest midget.

Tennessee is the 12th-best team in the SEC, but that's still a lot higher than the best team in C-USA. The fact that a player who received a scholarship offer from Tennessee picked Charlotte shows that we aren't quite the bottom-feeders many expect us to be. I'm not at all worried about UNC Greenville or their fans. Go ahead and talk smack; that's what it's all about - defending your school, building up a rivalry. I expect us to have a better team than UNC Greenville in short order. Just 359 days until victory #1 over Campbell.

GO NINERS!!!!!

I'm betting that the Tennessee player picked Charlotte ONLY because Charlotte's football team is new and he would have a better chance of getting noticed rather then being apart of the 12th best team in the SEC...and im a pirate btw ECU ARRRRRRRRRRRRG!!!!!!!!!!!!
