49ers' 'Dig Pink' campaign wrapping up

The Charlotte 49ers' volleyball "Dig Pink" campaign culminates Thursday when the 49ers face Butler in an Atlantic 10 match at 7 p.m. at Halton Arena.

The 49ers have led the nation the past two seasons in donations for Dig Pink, a college volleyball effort to raise awareness about breast cancer. Charlotte raised $11,878 in 2011 and just over $10,000 the previous year.

The 49ers have already raised about $2,600 from donations and solicitations at Carolina Panthers tailgates and at the University Chick-Fil-A. The 49ers also had a "Jail and Bail" Wednesday, where campus "celebrities," including baseball coach Loren Hibbs, softball coach Aimee DeVos, men's soccer assistant Kyle Gookins and football assistant Napolean Sykes were held and asked to solicit donations for their release.

The 49ers men's soccer team will wear pink jerseys and raise money for breast cancer awareness during their match Oct. 19 against Massachusetts.

If the 49ers have led the nation the past 2 years in fundraising for this worthy cause, it deserves more than a mentionion blog. If it was UNC-chapel hill that had let the nation for 2 years, there would be a half page front page article in the Observer.

^^^^ It deserves more than a mention in a blog.

Typical observer response to any 49er accomplishments because they gotta report what ol' Roy is having for breakfast next week.

The worst thing about the lack of story on this fundraising is that a story would enable even more money to be raised for this very worthy cause. That seems ok with the Observer though, as lomg as they keep the accomplishments away from as many folks in Charlotte as possible. Not to mention missing an opportunity to help build community pride. Building community pride has always been a no-no with the Observer when it comes to the 49ers. How sad. Very sad.

I agree with the other posters. This is quite an accomplishment and deserves to be in print with a reasonable write-up.

How can the Observer justify putting this in a corner blog?

Without calling out the Observer in particular, I will point out that each time the mighty ACC negotiates yet another gazillian dollar media deal to aid in their building of sports palaces, there is a celebration. In a perfect world, we'd pay more attention to money raised to fight disease than to promote entertainment. We don't live in a perfect world.
Thank you, David, for this little bit of coverage. There is a link on at Charlotte49ers.com at the bottom of the volleyball page should anyone care to donate.

Why should the Observer publish a story on this worthwhile endeavor when they can throw a big article out there telling us what Roy Williams had for breakfast and telling all of Charlotte we should be pulling for the tarheels?

This is the Observer's typical treatment of the hometown university. The better UNCC does, the less the Observer reports. They treat USC just as bad, even when we are ranked in the top 5.

USC Grad, Class of 1983.

Today they have a "Late Night With Roy" article, but still nothing about the Niner's great achievement for a worthy cause. That's pretty bad, but what is even worse is the fact no one representing the school is contacting the Observer pushing for this story (or any other story to be published somewhere other than a blog).

Heaven forbid that you tell folks a little more about HOW the 9er Men's Soccer Team is raising moeny for this worthy cause! As fyi they will offer all their 49er Pink Jersey's to the highest bidder via silent auction at this Friday & Sunday's games. There will be autograghed MLS items up for bid also. Good grief that was hard to do.
