Charlotte 49ers news, notes

-- Charlotte's 13th-ranked men's soccer team -- fresh off a nine-day break -- opens Atlantic 10 play Friday at league-newcomer Virginia Commonwealth (4-1-3), then heads to Richmond for a Sunday afternoon match.

The Atlantic 10 is having a solid year in men's soccer, with two other teams also ranked by Soccer America (unbeaten Xavier at 14, Saint Louis at 19th). It's not all good news, though: Richmond is discontinuing the sport after this season.

VCU opened the season without losing in its first six games, but has slowed a bit recently, losing to Virginia 1-0 and tying Northeastern 1-1. Richmond is 4-5. Charlotte hasn't played since beating Central Florida 2-1 in double overtime Sept. 26.

Charlotte's women, who opened their league season with two victories last weekend, play at George Washington on Saturday.

-- Charlotte freshman football player Justin Bolus, who recently had two stomach surgeries, has left school to recover and hopes to return in the spring. Bolus, an H-back who played in last year's Shrine Bowl, is from Folly Beach, S.C.

-- The 49ers' men's basketball team will play its preseason exhibition against Pfeiffer on Nov. 1 at Halton Arena. The regular season starts Nov. 9 against Charleston Southern.

-- Former 49ers basketball player Javarris Barnett is playing for the UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders in the British Basketball league. Barnett scored 38 points in a recent exhibition on 8-of-14 shooting from 3-point range.

Richmond cancelling soccer after this year is not bad news. We will not be in the same conference after this year.

I'm a little upset that I never had the opportunity to take a class and play Battleship in it. Why did I have to go to class and study when those athletes at UNC-Chapel Hill got to take non-existant classes and play Battleship in other classes?

Those Swahili and Battleship classes in Chapel Hill were not the easiest classes. That honor goes to their department of journalism. The Battleship class was only for one year.

Back on topic. The Niners' canny ability to not lose and force overtime can take them a long way once the playoffs begin. Perhaps another trip to the Final 4. Excuse me. I mean College Cup.

People at Chapel Hill earned the right to take those classes by either doing well in high school or being good at sports. They weren't busy whiffing through public school with C's, therefore ending up at UNCC.

Its good to see that our soccer team brings our school on the map because we all know the basketball team surely doesnt bring any good recognition to the program. I remember seeing Jay Bilas at the majority of the games at Halton Arena but havent seen him in a very long time, and for good reason......the 49ers suck. The last time we were good, we got crushed by NC State in the NCAA tournament.

Anon 11:36, you obviously know nothing about college and need to go back and get your GED. Many of the students at Charlotte were also accepted to Chapel Hill, including me. Some of those students chose Charlotte over Chapel Hill because they wanted to study engineering and Chapel Hill has no engineering program. Some wanted to study accounting, and UNCC's Accounting program has been ranked higher than Chapel Hill's for ages. The same goes for Architecture, with Charlotte's program being ranked one of the best in the nation. I personally chose Charlotte over Chapel Hill because I did not want people thinking I was stupid like so many of the UNC-chapel hill fans.

Why do you care what people think about you. They don't pay your bills, or live your life.

Go Carolina 49ers ...

^^^
Ah no
It's Carolina Gamecocks. Get it right!

Charlotte may have the best Engineering, Architecture, and Accounting programs, but UNC makes up for it with their Swahili program.

I love it when these "fans" of UNC-Chapel Hill invade the Charlotte 49er blog. Shouldn't they be learning Swahili or attending their gay rights meetings in Chape Hill?

Yes Gamiola....NCSU "crushed" Charlotte....sure, they had to come from behind by double digits to win and that was after the Niners had beaten State by over 20 pts. in Raleigh the previous time.

Everyone knows the UNC Charlotte
49ers are light years behind the great UNC Chapel Hill Tarheels in everthing but there can be only one supreme university in the UNC system. Quite frankly we are glad the UNCC 49ers admit to frustrated confusion and befuddled mind with UNCCH Tarheels. Neurologically undeveloped small children and adults with severe mental retardation or those with brain damage experience similar excusable mental chaos.

UNCCH supreme academic and athletic excellence in the ACC or its predessesor Southern Conference before 1954 is well known. Technically there should be NCAA national titles in football equal to the amount at other schools like SoCal, ND, OSU, Mich etc. It is not for a lack of tradition or talent but mostly due to the school spreading itself thin to cover a wide range of sports and not just football as many do.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has won 40 NCAA national championships.

Men's
Basketball – 1924, 1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009
Lacrosse – 1981, 1982, 1986, 1991
Soccer – 2001, 2011

Women's
Basketball – 1994
Field Hockey – 1985, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2007, 2009
Soccer – 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009

UNCCH football record 1888 - 2011
(def should have won at least 5-6 national titles espec in 1997, 1980, 1972, 1948, 1939, 1929, 1922, 1914)
