Charlotte 49ers open women's hoops practice

The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team -- which should challenge for the Atlantic 10 title in its final season in the league -- opens preseason practice at 1 p.m. Monday.

The 49ers, who have made the postseason for 10 consecutive seasons, return all five starters from last season's team that went 16-14 and lost in the first round of the WNIT.

Charlotte will have one of the top frontcourts in the A-10, led by forwards Jennifer Hailey, Amanda Dowe and Gabby Tyler. Guard Hillary Sigmon is also back after making the league's all-rookie team last season, as is point guard Jai Forney

Charlotte plays a preseason exhibition against Johnson C. Smith on Nov. 3 at Halton Arena and opens the regular season Nov. 10 at home against N.C. Central.

-- The 49ers women's soccer team broke quickly out of the Atlantic 10 gate over the weekend, winning a pair of games at Transamerica Field. On Friday, Charlotte beat Virginia Commonwealth 2-1 in overtime, then blanked Richmond 2-0 Sunday.

The 49ers have allowed one goal in their past four games and continue to get strong attacking play from Amanda Jones and Carrie Dail, who both have five goals. Jones had both goals against VCU, while Dail scored against the Spiders.

The 49ers (8-3-1, 2-0 A-10) play at George Washington (4-6-1, 0-2) on Saturday.

When does the men's team start practicing?

Who cares when the men start practicing, being a 49er fan is so frustrating. No game is a guaranteed win, is the term 49er just foreshadowing how many points they will score per game against an ok A10 opponent or by how many points they will lose to a higher end ACC team, we saw what Duke did to them a couple years back. And this isnt coming from a unc or duke fan, but a uncc grad

The men's basketball team at uncc is a huge embarrassment. As a uncc graduate there is no reason in the world why a university with 25,000 students in one of the biggest cities in the southeast is so bad. When you can't make the NCAA tournament you arent good, when you can't make the nit you are pathetic and when you can't even make your own sorry conference tournament, you should have to forfeit your athletic program. Alan major without question has looked down his bench in the last 2 years and thought to himself "how can I win with this team" there is more talent in high school State championship games than what is put out their in halton arena. We have big men that are soft and have horrible footwork. Guards that are 5 foot 9 and shoot more threes than all the other a10 teams
Combined and then we wonder why we suck so bad. The basketball program doesn't deserve the support they get. When you are consistently awful and a joke of an already bad conference, you will continue to see duke and unc sweatshirts on the Charlotte campus. Nobody wants to be a loser.

I'm guessing your degree was not in English.
By the way, the Atlantic 10 is not a bad conference in men's basketball and putting on a Tar Hole or Duke sweatshirt in no way indicates that one is a "winner".
Thank you very much for your comments on women's basketball, though.

"Gameis" is not a 49er fan. The A10 has been ranked the 6th, 5th, and 7th best ranked conference out of 29 in the past 3 years. The ACC was only ranked one notch ahead of them in 2 of those years. Of course, you will never read that bit of trivia in the Charlotte Observer, known more for their free advertising and promostions of UNC-Chapel Hill athletics than actually covering sports.
