49ers beat UNC in soccer exhibition

The Charlotte 49ers edged North Carolina 1-0 on Saturday in a spring-season friendly at Greensboro's Macpherson Stadium.

The game was part of the Greensboro United Soccer Association's ACC Hall of Champions Showcase at Bryan Park.

The 49ers scored midway through the first half when midfielder Will Mayhew tapped in a rebound after a shot by defender Charles Perez was saved by North Carolina's goalkeeper. The 49ers had chances to increase the lead in the second half. Defensively, Charlotte didn't allow the Tar Heels a shot on target.

The game was a rematch of sorts of the 2011 NCAA College Cup final, in which North Carolina beat Charlotte 1-0.

Charlotte hasn't allowed a goal in the three spring games it has played against college competition, tying South Carolina 0-0 and beating Virginia Tech 2-0 on two goals by Giuseppe Gentile.

The 49ers conclude their spring season at Wofford on Thursday (7 p.m.).

Exhibitions don't count. We are really good at winning things that do not count.

"Many in golf, including former major champions like Nick Faldo and Greg Norman, believe that Woods himself passed up a golden opportunity to redeem his reputation by voluntarily withdrawing from the tournament, on principle ... "
