49ers extend Major's contract

The Charlotte 49ers and men's basketball coach Alan Major have agreed to a three-year contract extension, the school announced Thursday.

Major, whose three-year record at Charlotte is 44-49, is now under contract through the 2017-18 season.

Under Major, the 49ers have improved from 10-20 his first season to 21-12 in 2012-13, the program's first 20-victory season since 2008. Charlotte also played in the NIT, its first postseason appearance since 2008.

“I am pleased with the direction of our men’s basketball program under the leadership of Alan Major,” athletics director Judy Rose said in a statement. “We are trending in the right direction.  Our team played in post season for the first time since 2008. His recruiting model is based on getting quality young men into our program… good basketball players with strong character and a strong desire to graduate."

Major is replenishing his roster after one player (DeMario Mayfield) was thrown off the team during the season and two others recently transferred (Darion Clark and E. Victor Nickerson). Charlotte has signed forward Cameron Blakley and Ben Cherry, a transfer from Tulane, for next season.

“As a coaching staff, we are excited and grateful for the opportunity to continue our journey at Charlotte,” Major said in a statement. “I am thankful for the support and leadership of Chancellor Phil Dubois and Judy Rose. I would like to give credit to our coaching staff, players and support staff for the part that they have played in this extension. I am very excited about the future of Charlotte basketball.”

Judy Rose is a joke...they hire a guy to replace a coach that is alumni, all time winning coach....and give him a 3 year extention for being 44-49??? Really, JUDY?? She should be fired today!!! UNCc is a JOKE and so is JUDY....

This defies all logic. The administration should seriously consider a mental evaluation for Judy Rose. She truly has lost her mind....

Hilarious. Rose wants to be remembered as the founder of football at UNCC. I'll remember her as the basketball program killer.

What do you people think this is, the Kentucky or Louisville program?

Major had exatly HALF a roster in his first year. Two years later he was mid-pack in a very tough A-10. Last year's team, even without Mayfield, would have been 14-2 and second place in C-USA. Major has earned more time.

Is he perfect? By no means. The roster turnover is a major concern. A program on this level should have guys for 4 years, not everybody playing 2 years and transferring. So there is a concern there, and if it happens again this year, some kind of action should be taken. But going from one of the 20 worst Division I teams to an NIT birth in 3 years is an excellent accomplishment and worthy of a short contract extension.

JAmes Edgar---are you on crack or just an idiot? One of the 20 worst teams? He took over a team that had just gone 19-12 the previous season. This program has NEVER been in the bottom 20 of anything though, with or without Major.

Disappointed 49er fan. Seems like all energy is going to football; b ball will be forever stuck in the abyss of mediocrity.

Judy Rose just threw the Charlotte basketball program under the bus for 5 more years.

Mike Pratt was fired for mediocrity.

Alan Major will need to win 12 of his next 15 games in order to catch up to Pratt's fireable coaching performance.

Dont worry folks.. Knowing Judy she just set this up to fire him next year. Lutz is still on out pay roll!

GO NINERS! All you naysayers, trolls, never-pleased-with-anything my school does or doesn't do: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Suffer your pain!! GO NINERS! I LOVE CHARLOTTE!

Graduated in 73, give a little but not big time.
I cant support this. Yall enjoy

This was a smart move by Judy. This allows her to to spend more time with her women's programs instead of having to worry about finding a new men's coach.

Major was able to bring in two 4 star transfers with a possibility of bringing in more four star recruits. I'm sorry but Judy was not going to fire Major anytime soon.

A couple things to bear in mind:

- There isn't another head coach in the country that could have achieved in three seasons the type of results that Alan Major delivered.
- Most BCS teams are eager to snatch Alan Major away from us. This gave Major quite a bit of leverage in negotiations.
- This deal sends a message across the country that Charlotte is big time and desires the type of once-in-three-years NIT postseason success of peers like Bethune-Cookman.
- Braxton Ogbueze was a Top 50 type of high school player. Previous Top 50 types that transfered to Charlotte include Shamari and MeAngelo. Unlike Ogbueze, Shamari and MeAngelo enjoyed a lot of success at their bcs school prior to transfering to Charlotte. But Shamari and MeAngelo are great examples of players that were beloved by the fanbase and guaranteed wnning basketball for the program.
- No one ever bitched and moaned about any previous contract extensions in Charlotte 49ers history.
- Season ticket sales are sure to skyrocket with Alan Major's pied piper like charisma to draw in the fans.
- We have an athletic director that makes sound decisions while drunk. She does not need to go home.

You are stoned. This is a terrible extension. Judy covered her shaky butt by giving him a soft schedule, assuring success and keeping her from looking like a fool by hiring a rookie, no-name coach. He is a PR mutant and the worst salesman in the 49ers' history. Good luck with him at the helm.

Anon 11:10, I think you forgot to recognize the sarcasm used by Anon 2:05.

If you really want to be heard, stop going to the games and wasting your valuable time on it. The program is mediocre and irrelevant.

Anonymous said...

Season ticket holder since Halton opened here. Until next year that is. We used to say "wait till next year". Now the gimmick is "wait 2 more years". Half of Major's players will have jumped ship by then.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, stop going to the games and wasting your time. That will only make recruting worse and if you are looking at getting another coach the school will not have any money to get one. If you want to make a difference go to all of the games and show your support. Recruits like that and may even sigh on to play. Also, it's kind of hard the call the shots when no one goes to the games now. Judy Rose jst calls on her list of donors and they give money. Go to the games and you actually put her in a bind.

Frank said...

Just found all this out at the baseball game. What's she thinking? Very disappointed in Major.

Anon at 12:44:
Thank you. Couldn't have said it better. Hadn't been to Halton in a year and I feel great. If you to get involved, good luck. Major is invisible, a pathetic PR person and juggles his roster like a 2-year-old holds grapes off the vine.
We are irrelevant and I don't care anymore.
The only reason I would give even $49 to the A/F is to keep a decent football parking spot when I can attend 2-3 games at the not yet named stadium. -Mark

Do you guys who always comlain about how bad Judy Rose is or how Bbad Major is ever write to the athletic program like other alums, students, fans write to theirs. The school is doing the best they can with what they got. You are not going to get another coach unless who si miracoulsy going to taje you to the NCAA ever year or managed to get 5 star players to come here. You are going to have to take baby steps. Major has managed to get two four star players here with a possibility of more but that would not have happened if he was fired. The new coach would have to start all over gain with no players on his roster. Yes there are some things that the school can do like market better but it is up to the students, alums, and the fan base to communicate with the athletic program and to work to improve things. I am tired of seeing all of the negative things that the these people have to write about the coaches and athletes but I have yet to see anyone implement anything besides their big mouths. I remember when the sudents at Creighton use to complain but then someone decided to go to the games and support the team nonetheless and then all of a sudden the team started to win games and confernce champsionships and then they were ranked in the top ten and now they are playing in the New Big East Conference.

Anonymous said...

The only thing that will help this program is to clean house! Top to bottom from CHP to the ticket office. Its been a wreck for too long and the 'baby steps' comment is ludicrous. Judy has been AD for 23 years!

Anonymous said...

Who you gonna hire to replace him????Huh?? Lets hear some names!! Matt Dougherty?? Mike Jarvis??
Idiots!

Anonymous said...

I thought the purpose of getting rid of Bobby was to hire someone better. Instead we hired a coach with no experience and no passion. My basketball season tickets will not be renewed. I am excited about football, soccer, and baseball, but not basketball. I cannot stand to see a coach who refuses to stand up for his players.

...and we had our pick of any coach in America because we have an unlimited budget and play in a Big 6 conference.
I'm surprised by this extension, but revisiting the Lutz situation serves no purpose whatsoever. Major must be adhering to some vision that Judy and Phil have, which I suspect includes having control of the team and of oneself. Theatrics on the sideline are quite entertaining, but are not the only indication of passion.
Major likely cares about winning and about this players welfare more than some people think, since those closest to the situation (not you or me) have granted him 3 more years. I hope they are right.

in 3 years Major will have us as one of the worst 50 programs in America... this is a terrible decision.

4-29 here we come

To Anon 3:19 and 5:34-When I said "baby Steps" I meant that Major is taking baby stepes to ebuild this program and he is. You guys argue that he played a soft non-conference season but most colleges; even top rank basketball colleges play soft non-conference seasons. Also, if you guys had been paying attention you have noticed that Charlotte had a tough conference season with Butler(who they beat), St. Louis, Xavier, La Salle, and VCU. This was one of the toughest seasons thay ever had and did pretty good; better than previous seasons. So this non-sens that Major stacked the deck with soft teams is simply that; non-sense. Also, as far as Mike Jarvis and Mike Doherty are concerned, those guys were not coming to Charlotte. Do you have evidence that these guys were interested in this job and Judy Rose for no reason turned them down? Judy Rose hired Major for two reasons; 1) he applied for the job and 2) He was the only one committed to the job. It's nice to have a wish list but if the people on the wish list are not interested in the job then it is only a wish list.

To Anon 3:19, your comments sound good but it is hard to fire a person who is bringing in all of the money to the athletic program; a total of 17 miilion a year (and that is not including the money that she raises to build athletic facilities) with very little coming from the students. Ms. Rose may be a train wreck but until someone can step in and raise the type of money that she raises without upsetting our donors then there is nothing that you can do. However, if some of you people who like to complain will go to the games and spend money on merchandise and give donations then you have some say so in Charlotte's athletic future. My point is this, everytime I visit this site the only thing I read is people complaining about things. If you got the fortitude then do something about it besides complain. Other students at top rank universities do. UNC-Charlotte is not going to let Judy Rose go unless they have something to replace her with. She has not manage to keep her job for over 20years because she is stupid. She has kept her job because she is good at one thing; raising money.

We hired Major for two reasons. 1) He was cheap. 2) He had the villa 7 reference.
You want me to spend MORE money and go to MORE games?!? HAH! And you say that will make Judy care about my opinion!!! HAHAHAH !!
Man youre a regular Jimmy Fallon!

Hey guys, if you dont like the replica football jerseys in the bookstore - buy them all out so they cant keep them in stock! Great idea!

Recommended new branding message that has really been the old stand-by: “UNC Charlotte: Striving for mediocrity … and achieving it”

Judy was hilarious at the uncc/a10 baseball tournament. NOBODY spoke to her like she had the plague. I semi felt sorry for her and wanted to console her.

People spoke to her. Unlike you, I spent most of my time, as did others, watching the field of play; not checking out Judy's social life. Enjoy your hatred.

Coach K wasnt popular with the media his first few years either. Maybe when Major take us to a final 4 he will break out of his shell.
All it takes is winning! 10-13-21!

Last years schedule was pathetic, but I think Mr. Major will probably make a positive contribution to 49er basketball. We'll see. I think our A/D has done a pretty fair job with all that is going on there. To win with this level of talent, it takes a lot of team discipline.
