Former 49er Clark headed to Southern Cal

Former 49ers forward Darion Clark, who left the program recently, is transferring to Southern California, Clark told the Observer.

Clark will play for new Trojans coach Andy Enfield, who recruited him coming out of high school at Oak Hill (Va.) when Enfield was coach at Florida Gulf Coast.

"It was an easy decision for me," said Clark. "I think USC is a place where I can really build a relationship with the coaches and I can work on my game and take it to the next level."

Clark, who averaged 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds as a freshman last season, declined to get into specifics on why he elected to leave Charlotte, but did say his diminished playing time late in the season was a factor. Clark, a starter for much of the season, played a total of seven minutes in Charlotte's two Atlantic 10 tournament games.

"That had something to do with it," said Clark. "But from my end, I'm not mad at anybody. A lot of stuff happened basketball-wise, and I knew I wasn't going to be as happy as I could be at Charlotte. It just wasn't as good a fit for me as I thought it would be. I got frustrated as the year went along.

"I just thought that if I was going to leave, I should leave early in my career so I'll have plenty of time to still play."

Clark will sit out the 2013-14 season with the Trojans, who haven't yet officially announced that Clark has signed with the program.

It's really unfortunate that he pouted rather than working his tail off to get playing time back. Glad he has found a place to make him happy and he should do well in an uptempo offense.

Anon 10:33 AM,

How do YOU know whether he "worked his tail off" or not? It's possible the young man just wanted to be in a situation where he felt he has a better chance to play. Don't denigrate him or brand him as a someone who'd rather pout. Fact is, YOU don't know! Your backhanded slap at this young man is what's truly "unfortunate"

With Braswell leaving he would have gotten a lot more time. Should have stayed.

I think he had a really good freshman year and would have been a pillar of the team for the next three years if he had stayed. Hope it works out at USC.

10:46AM: yes we do know since we watched him in games and get T'd up multiple times, pout on the bench, etc. I wish him the best, though. Just better that players who don't want to be here should leave.

@ 11:03 AM

You give new depth to the word "ludicrous". So you "watched him in games"....so what. Doesn't make you an authority on anything. You're just trying to stick a knife the kid's back as he heads for another situation. Grow up!

@ Anon 10:46 AM,

Clark had a great chance to play, he started the 1st half of the season. He was also going to get plenty of playing time this year. Did you watch any of the games in the 2nd half of the season? Pouting is exactly what he did when things didn't go his way. He made it vocal on twitter too. If the kid wants to make to the next level he needs a more professional attitude towards whatever role on a TEAM.

He needs to grow up
Plain & simple

He got Braswell syndrome. Liked him early on but you could see his effort and attitude change.

How to Manage Your Players
by Alan Major

Step 1: Promise starts to recruits Willie Clayton & Darion Clark
Step 2: Tell your star senior that he won't start and that his playing time will be diminished. Don't encourage star senior to stay with team.
Step 3: Start Clayton & Clark each half while watching Braswell lead team to 15-3 start.
Step 4: Break promise to Darion Clark. Watch Darion Clark's family & friends wonder why Darion is not in the starting lineup.
Step 5: Graduate Braswell and see Clark transfer.
Step 6: Laugh while the fanbase labels Braswell (who did the honorable thing by staying) and Darion (lied to) as pouty villains.

Now that we got all cancers off the team Alan can finaley get down to business! Give him a 5 year extension and watch it happen! Just wait to 2014!

So lets look at this timeline. USC hires Enfield April 2nd. (Enfield recruited Clark in high school.) Clark decides he is unhappy with Charlotte April 16th. May 23rd it's announced that Clark will transfer to USC.

Let me forecast 1 yr from now: 4 players leave due to drugs, grades, playing time. We finish 14-16. Same idiots say "we have stud recruits, and we will be good in year 2019."
