Rose: February comments sufficient

Alan Major

Charlotte athletics director Judy Rose has declined an interview request with the Observer to talk about the 49ers’ recently concluded men’s basketball season.

A school spokesman said Rose has nothing further to say about the season beyond the comments she made to Observer columnist Tom Sorensen in February after a 59-56 loss to Marshall, the third defeat in what would become a six-game losing streak.

Here’s the portion of Sorensen’s column in which Rose was quoted:

“Rose doesn’t regret (coach Alan Major’s contract) extension. She says Major and his assistants are recruiting ‘the right kind of kids.’ She says the team has lost its focus; it’s not the team it was early this season. But she still believes in the players and the coaches.

“You haven’t lost faith in Major?

“ ‘No,’ Rose says after the game. ‘No. Absolutely not.’ ”

The 49ers, who had nonconference victories against Michigan and Kansas State, finished the season winning three of four games, bowing out of the Conference USA tournament’s quarterfinals.

The 49ers were 17-14, their second consecutive winning season under Major, who has a four-year record of 61-63 at Charlotte.

Major received a three-year contract extension in 2013, keeping him at the school through 2017-18 at an annual salary of $465,000.

Attendance at Halton Arena averaged 5,111 this season, lowest in the building’s 18-year history. Charlotte's last NCAA tournament appearance was in 2005.

The 49ers had just one senior on this season’s team (guard Ben Cherry) and have a strong recruiting class (guards Keyshawn Woods and Torin Dorn) and talented transfers in guard Braxton Ogbueze and forward Bernard Sullivan coming in for the 2014-15 season.

Judy Rose is a complete buffoon who has driven this program into a ditch. In addition to firing Alan Major, who is woefully out of his depth, the 49ers need a change at the Athletic Director position. The CEO needs to get the ax when performance continues to drop. We are fast approaching 10 years from the last NCAA trip. Keep quiet Judy, it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

Anonymous said...

we had just one senior because Major can't keep a full roster. Judy needs to understand that the fan base has eroded and that a "conversation" through the media is a positive step. Or, maybe she doesn't understand business.

Most of us reasonable fans felt that this should have been the season we got back to the NCAA tournament, as the team had improved each of the previous 2 years after Major inherited exactly half a team his first year. I don't think he should be axed, but the team clearly regressed this year, and was wildly inconsistent. How do you beat Kansas St, Michigan and UTEP and lose to UTSA, Marshall and Rice?????

Hopefully the new recruits, the transfers, and the year of experience for the rest of the team will bring a championship for this weak conference so we can get back to the NCAAs.

This program has become such a joke.

Perhaps Judy is too busy with her women's team playing in the NIT to worry about something as trivial as the men's basketball team.

what a joke. i guess she'll find out next year when halton arena is even less full than this year.

James Edgar,
Major did not inherit "1/2 a team"

STOP, what a ridiculous claim. He gutted a 19 win team that Mrs Rose proclaimed "not broken"

Judy Rose is a fantastic AD. Over our time in the A 10 we had more conference championships across all sports than any other team in the conference. Anyone who says she should be fired clearly has no idea what their talking about. We love you Judy! Go Niners

Last year's contract extension was clearly a mistake. I can understand making a mistake once in a while but doubling down now and not firing Major after such a horrible season should solidly connect her future at the university with his. Unless we are in the NCAA tournament next year, they should both go! We are worse off than the year Lutz was fired and we were playing much better competition then! I can promise you I will not be renewing all of my season tickets at Halton Arena next year!

Time to lower the BOOM on a Major mistake and pedal a thorny Rose. Now, doesn't that hokey reply sound like Tweety Bird Major? #RespectTheCliches.

Is Bobby available? Although I he frustrated me with his teams' three point shooting and weak scheduling, I liked him better than Major. When I was a student at Charlotte, going to the NCAA tournament was expected, not wishful thinking. Mullins, Watkins, Lutz (early years) were good times.

The FIRE Major posters are about a dozen trouble makers from a "fan" website! These 'trolls' were saying fire Lambert last year! Yes it was a down year but rebuilding years happen. Next year they will be saying "They're Baaaaack!!!"

GO NINERS!

All those thousands of empty seats in Halton are more than a dozen fans on a website. Also there are two sports that matter in college athletics. Football and basketball are it. Football was forced upon her and the further from Jeff Mullins foundation we get the worse the basketball program are. No one donates money to win tennis or track titles.

First, Major has only had one winning season out of 4, so the poster saying "back to back winning seasons" has no clue.

Next, there are way more that a dozen fans disenchanted with Major. recent surveys have revealed the percentage is way above 80%.

Major has:

1. A losing record in 4 years.
2. A dismal 31% winning record in the A10 before we left.
3. A losing record in a one-bid CUSA this year.
4. Only one winning season out of four.
5. a rpi of 155 this season.

I could continue, but I think anyone with a brain gets the picture.

We are lucky to have as many as a dozen fans who still care about this basketball program.
I am just waiting to see how many players will be transferring out of the program this year.

I don't think that firing Major is a good thing at the moment. He has established a pipeline with recruits and there are some really good players coming to Charlotte in the future. Next year is a perfect example. Also, what coach is going to come to Charlotte and get paid $450 when they can go elsewhere and get more? The basketball team need fan and student support. For gosh sakes, you were willing to fire Lambert after the first ever season of football. Give Major another year to pull this out. This will be his fifth year. If we are in the same boat as this year you can say fire him.

Anonymous said...

Looks like a handful more than a 'dozen'. Specifically, 89% of fans polled said they were disappointed in the current state of the basketball program (11% no comment or did not care about basketball). Of these fans:

97% blame Major
68% blame upper management (to include Judy Rose, Phil Dubois or "Athletic Department")
84% want to fire Major (Remaining fans want to give Major another year)
32% want to fire upper management (to include Judy Rose, Phil Dubois, or "Athletic Department". An unscientific count of these respondents tells us most want Judy Rose gone)
9% want to fire "other" (responses include Norm, Bobby Lutz)

Fun fact: 4% of all respondents think that the food at Hayes Stadium is awful, while a healthy 100% said they would eat it.

Notes: 197 fans polled (4 fan responses removed due to bias/trolling) at Hayes Stadium over the course of 3 nonconsecutive days. Fans were asked at the food stand, on the concourse, seating, and parking lot.

Take this however you want. This wasn't a lab run poll, but I think it is an interesting discussion point. Go Niners.

Anonymous said...

I have been a Niners fan for close to 10 years now. Graduated in 2009. I have not seen them in the tourney once. I am not hoping for a national championship, but is a conference championship and a trip to the big dance to hard to ask for? With the roster next year, seems like it is always "next year", it has to be make or break for making the tourney. Schedule a top 100 nonconference and make the big dance. If he does this I think he is safe. But anything less than making the tourney next year Judy has to let him go. He hasn't gotten the job done.

Anonymous said...

A dozen, huh? Short vision. Based on this past year's attendance at Halton, how many more can you lose?

"These 'trolls' were saying fire Lambert last year!"

You are obviously a female employee of the Athletic Department and thus a close friend of Rose. You are part of the problem.

"fire LAMEbert" is internet sarcasm stemming from the constant barrage of non-sarcastic Fire Judy and Fire Major threads.

I didnt quite achieve some things I wanted to either...like renewing my season tickets or 49er club donation. #firemajor

Anonymous said...

She won't fire him because any AD that has to fire two basketball coaches one year after giving them long-term extensions in a 4-5 year period should in turn be fired for their poor decisions as well. So she'd be firing herself. She probably wants one more year for herself at least.

Anonymous said...

I hope unc concord keeps J Rose for a long time!! She is pathetic and has run your program into the ground for the 2-3K fans you have.

Anonymous said...

For all of you Einsteins out there. You fire Major and then what? Now you will be paying for two coaches that you have fired, not to mention paying for a third. Two, what coaches or athletic directors do you know will come to Charlotte to coach a team with fans and supporters who don't support the team and have no team spirit. And the ones that do come is going to want more than what you are paying now. And that is not to mention the pay for the support staff. These things don't come cheap. You're looking at 1 million for an athletic director and at least 1 million for a basketball coach (not $465, 000 a year). And then there is the support staff who is going to want more money that what we are paying. Who exactly is going to pay for all of this? I hope not the students because that would mean they would be paying an additional $2,500 a year for all of this. I have an idea, how about going to the games and supprting the athletes (All of them). You know, like they do at the big programs. When you see a basketball player on campus thank them for their service. There is a scientific fact that states that when you support athletes they actually perform better. Try being fans and supporters and not whiners and complainers. You can fire as many people as you want but until you have that fan support the school is not going anywhere.

Tricky said...

For above, how long do you "support" a continuously losing program and accept it? We have been doing this for some time now in basketball and all of us supporters who buy season tix and donate money year after year are sick and tired of it. You can support the athletes all you want but if they do not have the properly leadership the program is still not going anywhere. We continue to support our university and our players, its the leadership we do not support.

As far as your "facts", please get them straight. We will be only paying one coach this year, elite coaches may bring 1 mil a year, not in CUSA. Please quit your ranting and go cheer on your Crapel Hill Tarholes.

12:47....you are really clueless. Lutz is paid off as of next month. Major's contract is NOT cost-prohibitive (ie; he can be fired and only owed ~200,000/year for 4 years more or LESS. We have paid Lutz/Major a combined salary of over $700,000 for the last 4 years. So, we can certainly afford more than $465,000/year going forward.

Anonymous said...

For 1000000000th time!!!!!

We are done paying Lutz this spring!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I want Judy to own up to her mistake(s) and tell us Lutz and Major contract details.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 3:41 First of all, I do support UNC-Charlotte. Two, you support the team all the time regardless of whether they win or lose. You can argue on whether you like Major or not but you don't stop supporting your team. Also, the women's basketball team had a successful year last year in the A-10 and you clowns still did not attend the games. So what was the excuse for that? You don't even go to the football games. I hate to inform you but first year football teams don't always succeed as we would like them too. You don't have to support a coach that you think is bad but you can go to games and show support. To Anon4:29 and Anon 4:29, it does not matter if you the last payment for Lutz is next month, you are still paying him!!!!! You will also be paying Major until 2017. Does that make sense? Also, I know that coaches in Conference USA (except Private universities) make below 1million but the coaches that you have mentioned in the past will want a million. Also, the new coach is going to want more than $465,000 which we are going to have to pay for. He is not going to be cheap. Even if you take the combined salary of $700,000 you still have to pay his staff, Einstein, which is more that what we are paying Major Or Lutz now. At the end of the day Student fees will go up and we still have to pay. This is not going to be cheap. Let me explain what the problem is; You have 16 public schools and half a dozen private schools in North Carolina, the majority of which are Division 1 schools with North Carolina, Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest at the top. Recruiting for students is tough to begin with and it takes time to establish a pipeline for players. After Lutz was fired everyone said that Charlotte would never get another player. "They would wave at the school as they pass by to the school of their choice. After four years of opening a pipeline of players and getting high school basketball players to take this school seriously we want to fire him. Go ahead and fire him. Those recruits that are suppose to be coming in next year will transfer to other basketball teams leaving us with no one. It is going to take two years to get some recruits and it will not be enough to have a successful season. We are going to have to wait another four years for that to happen and in the meantime we are going to have to listen to you clowns complain about how bad this coach is. Support you team, your school, your alma mata. You don't hear anyone at Wake Forest or App State complaining about how bad their year was. App State supported their team despite how bad their year was or having to fire their coach and they still was able to take a television contract from us (Regardless of how bad things got they still supported their team and got a television contract as a result. Any lessons to learn here?). And they have less Alumni members leaving in Charlotte then we do.

Wonder why Halton is empty? The B-Ball program is a joke- end of story. I am so happy that under Rose UNCC has won so many A-10 titles in curling, checkers, and shuffleboard. Maybe we should look into sports that garner the greatest amount of public interest and support. Major is out of his league in D I. He cannot build a consistent team and keep them motivated plus adjust his strategies to fit the high caliber programs. He does get lucky once or twice a season and beats a nationally ranked team but that is about it. As an alumni I have no hopes of seeing a NCAA or NIT tournament bid. One of those empty seats throughout the season was mine and I am not going to renew.

NWA49 said...

LOL Wake wasn't complaining? They bought a billboard saying fire their AD and he finally did fire the coach and they celebrated like they won a title. Obviously you pay very little attention to college basketball.

Anon 3:08, the fact you are bragging about women's basketball makes it obvious you are close to Judy. I read that longwinded post of yours twice and it has little merit. Are you not aware of Wake fans putting up a billboard to help get rid of their coach.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 5:43 and Anon 10:17-You need to read that longwinded post again because you obvioulsy missed the point. Are you aware that charlotte lost a contract to App State. Despite how bad things went the fans still supported their teams and got a contract out of it. I mean they took one from us in out of our own backyard because the fans stood together. Also, since you want to bring up Wake Forest. Let me go ahead and shut your argument down. How many coaches have Wake forest went through to get the same results? How much money have they spent so far to get the same results? And they are still in the bottom of the ACC because the fans, like you clowns, don't understand that it takes time to build a team and perfection does not happen on day 1. Also, that comment about me supporting Judy's women program is tasteless. It proves that you do not support the program or else you would have known that true 49ers support their athletic programs regardless of who wears the jersey. Kids who come to this school to play regardless of the sport deserve out respect and encoruagement. They could have went anywhere but they came here to play. Who made you "Lord and Master" over what is important. You support your teams regardless. I mean the fans at programs like North Carolina and Duke support their women's programs. Don't you dream to be like them everyday. If you want some statistics on their attendance i can go ahead and show you. You guys talk a lot about the other programs, how about acting like the fans who attend those games. Let me make this simple for you, if you want a good program, yeah you need good coaches and players but you also need good fans. It's the fans and supporters who determine how successful their programs is. If you want to know how to act like good supporters got to the Illinois News Gazette and read the comments on their team, University of Illinois. They had a bad season too and lost to Clemson in the NIT. They even lost their top recruits to other teams. You see nothing but support for their team. Go ahead and look. That's how real fans and supporters behave. They have class; something you two clowns no nothing of. Withold your tickets and gripe about how bad things are, UNC-Charlotte was here before you and will be here long after you. But for now, I am going to support the Green and White. 49er forever.

UNCC basketball is really bad. As a 1985 grad, I feel I've earned the right to express this. That being said, it's not going to get any better any time soon. Sure Major is a very poor coach, but Judy will not fire him after receiving the contract extension. To bad we missed out on that Winthrop coach a few years back. Where's he at now....oh yea Wichita State. They went to the Final 4 last year an undefeated this year. Judy chose some asst. instead-how's that worked?

Anonymous said...

I think Major is a great guy and those that know him will agree. The only problem is being a great guy does not mean he is a great head coach. However, he does make a good assistant coach. WE should have parted ways last week in time for him to grab a good job as an assistant somewhere.

I think Judy is more concerned about her ego than she is the men having a good basketball program. I wish she put the enthusiasm into the men's program that she does the women's program. We would be post season every year and I guarantee we would have a good coach.
