49ers baseball returns home


After two straight road series and four of their last five away from Hayes Stadium, the Charlotte 49ers return home for a pair of Atlantic 10 weekend series, starting this weekend with La Salle.

Charlotte is 26-15 overall, 10-9 and in a tie for fourth place in the league standings. The Explorers are 17-22 overall, 6-11. Charlotte has won its last three weekend series.

Charlotte will send sophomore righthander Joe Yermal (6-2) against La Salle's Zach Huff (0-0) at 6 p.m. Friday. Yermal's six wins are tied for the league lead. Saturday, Charlotte right-hander Patrick Lawson (5-2) will face off against the Explorers' Kevin Fuqua (4-2) in a 2 p.m. game. The teams play Sunday at noon.

Charlotte senior third baseman Aaron Bray needs 12 more hits and 11 more runs to become the 49ers' all-time leader in those two categories.

Also of note:
-Charlotte track and fieler performer Lamarra Currie was named one of 10 female finalists for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. Annually, the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award is given to an NCAA athlete who best exhibits academic excellence and community activism.
