Charlotte hires Ohio State assistant Alan Major

Ohio State assistant coach Alan Major has accepted an offer Friday to become the new head men's basketball coach with the Charlotte 49ers, two sources confirmed to the Observer.

Major visited the 49ers campus on Thursday as a candidate for the 49ers' coaching vacancy - the only candidate who met with the remaining men's basketball staff during the search process.

Major, 41, just completed his sixth season with the Buckeyes under head coach Thad Matta and he spent three seasons as an assistant under Matta at Xavier before that. Major also spent five seasons at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif.

A native of Indianapolis, Major has also served as an assistant coach at Pacific, Southern Illinois and California Lutheran University (Division III) since graduating from Purdue in 1992.

Major attended Manual High School in Indianapolis. From there he went to Purdue and served as a manager for Gene Keady’s Boilermakers. He graduated from Purdue in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He added a master’s in education with an emphasis on physical education from Cal Lutheran in 1995.

Any reputation regarding recruiting?

He recruited Evan Turner, but doesn't appear to have recruited any of the other great players his teams have had (Oden, Conely, David West, Olowokandi, etc...).

Seems to be more of a player development guy than a recruiter, his choice of assistants is going to be very important.

Alan Major recruited Greg Oden, Evan Turner, Mike Conley, David Lighty, Daequan Cook, and many others. He was big on player development and recruiting. He's an excellent coach.

Welcome Coach !
Your success, means our success.

An old 49er, hoping for both

Alan has done his fair share of player recruiting, including traveling around the world looking at talent. He is a great choice for Charlotte, and I'm proud that he's my uncle!

John Groce seems to get the credit for at least Oden and Conley, I can't speak to the others you mentioned. He did recruit Turner and has a long history of developing players. I'm not saying he is a bad recruiter, but I'm not sure he has ever been the primary recruiter for Matta.

I think he is a great hire for Charlotte, I'm just not entirely sold that he is a top recruiter based on his history.

That'll do Charlotte, that'll do.

Major did not recruit David West. West was on Skip's team at X and Matta(Major) inherited David.

He was never Thad Matta top asst. coach in all the years he was at OSU. You fired a proven coach that had his entire team back from a 19 win season for a an unproven asst. coach. Wait til some of this years players leave and in about 3 years you will be showing Judy and the president the door. Hope tht football thing works out for you.

Charlotte is fortunate to inherate the integrity and talent of Coach Major....to all of those skeptical of his ability, I am anxious to see your posts this time next year.
