OSU assistant expected to visit Charlotte 49ers

Ohio State assistant men's basketball coach Alan Major is expected to make a visit to the Charlotte 49ers campus on Thursday as a candidate for the 49ers' coaching vacancy, two sources said on Wednesday.

Major, 41, just completed his sixth season with the Buckeyes under head coach Thad Matta and he spent three seasons as an assistant under Matta at Xavier before that. Major also spent five seasons at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif.

A native of Indianapolis, Major has also served as an assistant coach at Pacific, Southern Illinois and California Lutheran University (Division III) since graduating from Purdue in 1992.

Major attended Manual High School in Indianapolis. From there he went to Purdue and served as a manager for Gene Keady’s Boilermakers. He graduated from Purdue in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He added a master’s in education with an emphasis on physical education from Cal Lutheran in 1995.

Wake Foret terminates basketball coach. Wake Forest AD said he always keeps a list of potential coaches should a decision like this have to be made. He indicates he would not want be without a head coach and have no options

This is just an equal opportunity interview.
I didn't know the Rooney Rule applied to college basketball...?

I would hold off on that sleep. We are talking about a coach that has seen the Finals, an NIT Champsionship, and an Elite Eight appearance in the last four years. Where have those other so called potentials been...
Not mention a recuiting record that is outstanding. I know of at least three pros that he recuited. And Evan Turner just opted for the NBA draft.

Yawn....no more of my money. And before you smartass people make a commment, I sent well over 3K to the school last year and I have been away from the campus for 16 years.

i think this would be a great hire. Worked under proven winners, has a good recruiting record and will come in hungry to make changes.

to everyone complaining: you're ignorant. Who did you want us to hire? Bob Knight? No wait, lets bring Dean Smith out of retirement.Dave Odom seemed like a great choice, or maybe we could get Bobby Cremmins away from CofC. What other big name dinosaurs sound good to you morons?

Another no-name coach. Yes he road the bus to a final four. Yes watched another coach develop a game plan. Yes he sat on the same bench and watched a head coach. Silly 49ers head coaches don't come to work for male bashing Community Colleges.

Yeah 9:46 am if you are such a bragger, why don't use your name instead of listing your fantasy donation dollars.

I think this would have been a great experience for everyone. I hope it was.

Regarding Coach Major, no head coaching experience...a drawback...lets look at the players he has worked with. Michael Olawakandi-first overall pick in nba draft, David West-Naismith award winner, nba fist round pic, Greg Oden, Mike Conley, Dequan Cook-nba first round pics, Evan Turner-Naismith Awrd winner, sure fire nba first round pick. To think Coach Major had nothing to do with the development, recruitment and more importantly the fact ZERO of these players had an inkling of trouble is naive. Coach Major would be an outstanding choice

great. now we're going to have to listen to the ohio state fans as they think they are the best in everything...and in we as human beings should be thankful for everything they have influenced. and they refer to their school as "the ohio state." what a joke.

go get brad bronnell and billy donolon from wright state. good quality coaches.

For all the folks who are complaining about no name recognition- what do you expect? The only way a person with name recognition would come to Charlotte would be if that person had just been fired from another program and was on the way out- and chances are that if that person came to Charlotte and did well, they'd take off the minute they got the opportunity to get an ACC or Big Ten contract. But coaches have to make their name somewhere, and Charlotte is a great place for that to happen. I think the only way we'll end up having a great coach who sticks around is if he has a sense of loyalty to the program and sees it as his legacy. Take Mike Krzyzewski, for example- his coaching experience prior to Duke was 5 unremarkable years at Army. Duke wasn't a powerhouse before he took over (remember, it USED to be an NC State-Carolina rivalry), but he came to a second-tier ACC school, MADE IT one of the best in the country, and never left. Other examples of this type of relationship: Tom Izzo (MSU assistant when hired), Brad Stevens (almost NO coaching experience before his hire), Dean Smith (3 years of assistant coaching experience at UNC), Bo Ryan (15 years at UW-Platteville and 2 seasons at UW-Milwaukee). And the list goes on. So let's keep positive here, and hope that if we get this guy he'll be the next Izzo.

That's interesting.

Whoever is saying he has no real coaching experience, just google it. He does!
