49ers' frustrations deepen

Charlotte had five players play 28 minutes or more in the 49ers' 82-68 loss against Davidson on Saturday. The long minutes are starting to take their toll.

“It’s obvious,” said point guard Jamar Briscoe, who played 35 minutes with a sore Achilles. “We’re hitting a wall defensively after 25 or 30 minutes every game. It’s tough, because you want high energy in practice and to be that intense in games. But it’s hard to balance that. Even though we’re only playing seven or eight guys, we’ve got to get through it. We’ve got to find a way.”

Davidson coach Bob McKillop said the game plan was to try and wear the 49ers down. Davidson played 10 guys, eight of whom played 10-plus minutes.

-- Coach Alan Major didn't know if forward K.J. Sherrill will be back from a knee injury in time for next Friday's game against No. 11 Tennessee at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Volunteers will be ranked higher than that by game time, incidentally, since they upset No. 3 Pitt on Saturday. Sherrill has been practicing lightly recently, but hasn't been in any contact practices and Major won't play him until that happens.

-- Major has at least kept his sense of humor about the injures that continue to plague his team. Of Charles Dewhurst, who hurt his knee in preseason then broke his finger earlier this week in practice after he had been cleared to play, Major said:
"The next time he's ready to go, I'm going to lock him in a room with security guards and hound dogs and bolt him to a table. He's going to make sure he looks both ways when he crosses the street on campus."

-- Since it's been three years since Charlotte and Davidson last played, most players on both teams were getting their first taste of the rivalry. Davidson's JP Kuhlman said he was impressed with how many 49ers fans (appeared to be several hundred tucked in an upper corner of Belk Arena).

-- Briscoe continues to be bothered by the sore Achilles, which he says he hurt Tuesday against Winthrop by coming down awkwardly on it when he made a long pass to An'Juan Wilderness.

"It's a mental thing," said Briscoe, who wore a protective boot on his foot until game time. "It did bother me, but it didn't hinder me from doing stuff. I try not to think about it, because I made up my mind that I was going to play."

we got punked from the tip of the second half, it had nothing to do with "stamina." Every game, we are getting abused in the second half. The fatigue excuse is just that, an excuse. Dew nor KJ would of helped.

if it is not stamina then what would you call it?...I mean aside from selfish garbage basketball.

what happened to Spears?

Clearly another reason for UNCC to move their sports programs to the division two level. It's pretty sad when someone is "impressed" that "several hundred fans" showed up to watch that pathetic example of collegiate athletics. UNCC has and alwayls will be a glorified community college

The shame of our administration! We put ourselves in this situation buy waiting too long to hire Bobby's replacement and by hiring someone who has never been a head coach at any level. Read that again. And laugh. I did.

We could have taken a flier late on the kid De'Mon Brooks who plays at Davidson. We could have signed any guard. We needed bodies. Period.

With his only recruit for this year ineligible, what does it tell you about his preparedness when we were all happy Charles Dewhurst returned? Great kid, but, do you think he'll be a backcourt savior? That’s not fair to Dewuy.

Until this season, did anyone in our 49er fan history ever say to themselves, "Wow. I'm glad Colby Lewis can help 5-10 minutes a game?"

Seriously. If Major can't get a player of Shamari's ability on the same page as him and his team, that's just ridiculous leadership ability. The kids should all want to play for him first, us second and the word CHARLOTTE across their chest. If he can't get the pissy, immature Spears on the same page since April, what does that say about rookie head coach Alan Major? Sounds like Hal Wissel and his ban of star players not so long ago and we know where that led: 9-19, 8-20 and 5-23.

In 4 years, we'll need someone like Jeff Mullins again and more than the song "New Attitude".

MAJOR DISASTER !!!!!

I got an idea. We should go out and take flyers on a bunch of no talent guards to fill the depth charts for one year. Give them all 4 year scholaships and set the program back 10 years just to be sub par to mediocre the first year. There are not unlimited scholarships that can be handed out like lollipops and taken away when the player under performs. I agree with the way the program is being run at this point. A selfish player is out. A decent recruiting class that will help compete in the A10 is coming in. There are more highly rated recruits on the radar than I've seen in 10 years for 2013. You guys are win now people and I don't understand that mentality when you haven't been winning for the last few years.

bobby lutz is laughing his ass off at this sad sad PATHETIC basketball program and athletic dept! HAHAHAHAHA!

your comments are comical, Major hasn't inked anyone that says wins are coming. He signed 4 mediocre kids. The wait till next yr mentality sucks. Niners have the 304th easiest schedule so far. This is pathetic

the best hope for this program is Major gets embarrassed and resigns

Anon 8:10,

Take that stupid shit elsewhere. You clearly know nothing about UNC Charlotte. Where did you go to school at?

Anonymous said...

Bobby Lutz can't laugh because these are his players. You guys say Major sucks and Judty Rose sucks, but you have no better solutions. Who would you have hired? The former coach from ECU or an App. State coach. You guys live in a pipe dream where you think Charlotte will lure Izzo or Roy Williams. Get real. Charlotte is in the Atlantic 10, not the ACC, SEC, Big 10, or any other BCS conference. An assistant with the experience of developing great players from a BCS conference was a great choice for Charlotte.
And if you laugh at the wait til next year for wins attitude, then you'll only get more frustrated as the losses pile on this year. Charlotte is a bottom 3 in the A10 team this year. At least until they prove otherwise.

What in the hell are you talking about? No one ever thought we would hire a Roy Williams or a Tom Izzo. It would have been nice, however, to spend the package we pay $1.6 - $2 million on a coach that at least was a head coach. Not a damn rookie who can't lead or get out of his own way.

"Where did you go to school AT?"

Proper English? Negative. Probably another UNCC reject. In other words, a RATARD.

As far as the athletic department is concerned...everyone from the AD to the annual fund idiots to the new coaches to the dorky Niner fanatics are pathetic. Yes, I'm calling out the 13 kids that jump up and down in the first row and actually think they're making a difference. YOU ARE A JOKE! UNCC IS A JOKE!

Anonymous said...

You're right. I remember reading the long list of D1 coaches lining up for Charlotte on this blog. Maybe you are referring to the head coach for JC Smith or Queens College. It takes more than the money, but also the interest in wanting to come to the school. I also don't think Charlotte broke any records with the money that was offered to coach Major.

Anonymous said...

So people said, "Bobby Lutz didn't get us to the NCAA for 5 years so he has to go." Well, now we are on No. 6. Next year with mostly underclassmen is going to be No. 7. If the coach is a bust, there's season No. 8. So when is it exactly that we can 'we now.' At this point, I'd take winning as much as we did last year, which isn't going to happen.

With 49ers, bobcats and panthers loosing every week, we all better move to another city! lol... I am a 49er and will support them no matter what! There are hard times like this. Nagging and blaming doesn't solve the problem. Let's support the team and hope for a turning point soon.

Cool. Call me out. Who are you? Ah, yes, anonymous. Keyboard Cowboy. Tim Collie?

If you're going to call somebody out, grow a pair and identify yourself.

Coward.

Lewis...you are one of my main targets. You are a LOSER. Of the 13 called out dorks, YOU are the biggest, most pathetic dork. Everyone LAUGHS at YOU!

And no, I am not Tim Collie.

how much would we have to offer to get lutz back? the only chance would be to fire rose and say we screwed up. she should realy go be the ad at queens, she has no business running the 49ers athletic dept.

we have a MAJOR problem.

That's pretty cute you have to hide behind a computer to make fun of students who actually care about the success of the program.

I assume you've been to a game this season. I'm also going to assume you were one of the Walmart shoppers that our student section called out for wearing baby blue in our arena. If not, where did you graduate? What program do you support?

Sorry metro,

I heard "dorks" and immediately thought "lightsavers."

Of course, your name would have to be the first to come to mind, wouldn't you agree?

It has to be a_b704. Its the only person that hates our school so much that they comment on everything that is related to it. They pretend to have graduated from UNC-CH, but its really just some troll with a grudge against UNC Charlotte..

Anonymous said...

HAHAHAHA. Lutz would never come back to Charlotte. Judy rose must go. You get rid of a coach who won 19 games and replace him with who??? That has class written all over it doesn't it? And yes, these are Bobby's guys; the same guys he won 19 games with last season versus a tougher schedule. UNCC sucks, their coach sucks, their ADD ROSE SUCKs, and their president Duibose sucks. Get rid of all of them and maybe, just maybe UNCC could get Bobby back. And yes he's laughing all the way to the bank!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Rose "man up" "grow a set" do the honorable thing and resign. The echo of the bouncing ball is going to be deafening in an empty Halton Arena this year. Call me a prophet b/c I told everyone 9 months ago this was going to happen. And there were numerous college head coaches with experience and a winning track record willing to come to Charlotte U.

Anonymous said...

Never send a Major to do a Generals job

Anonymous said...

Everyone here who is asking for Lutz to come back is missing the bigger picture. Quit bringing up the 19 win season. They started that same season out 18-5 and ended it 19-12!! Another reason why we needed to get rid of booby was because of his recruiting. Every year it is JuCo's and transfers.

Anonymous said...

You guys asking for Lutz are funny. He should've been ousted before the so called 19 win season when he went 11-20. What about two years before that when he went 14-16. Success and financial gain are a result of NCAA Tourney appearences which have been far and few between (last in 04-05). Why don't you look at the 83-75 record since joining the A10. Lutz was a great ambassador for Charlotte and deserves praise for that, but it was time for a change. How can you justify firing an AD who has won in almost every sport except Mens BBall since joining the A10. Hmmm....I think the right one lost their job. You should support your new coach during a losing season the same way you did Lutz.

Most the idiots who are badmouthing our program as "anonymous" are probably high school drop outs living in trailer parks in Gaston or Lincoln county who pull for "derrr heelz."

If not, then they probably reside from davidsoncats.com. Either way, these people will be allowed on the bandwagon in 2 years. Major is going to do big things here, but go ahead, it's much easier to criticize someone behind a keyboard and an "Anonymous" user tag.

Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce an empty gym can be demoralizing. Olympic sports don't attract money, attention, or fans. Maybe Judy should apply for an US Olympics position. Major is good guy but the wrong hire. His unfamiliarity with the landscape obvious. Can’t blame him cause Judy hired him. Fire her and make him an Administrative Assistant.

Anonymous said...

I said before, Major's winning percentage is at 40%. This will not increase his stay in Charlotte based on his predecessor's winning percentages. He has the second lowest winning percentage of all coaches so far next to Hal Wissel. Sometimes it takes a program to go through 2 or 3 coaches to get a good one.

Anonymous said...

I love everyone who loves Major says "Let's just wait" but when it came to Lutz it was "We can't wait any more." Which is it?

MAJOR F-UP

5 years of no NCAA tourneys vs. 10 games of the regular season. What are you a Chapel Hill grad? I forgot they don't teach math there. I am now less intelligent after reading your asinine comment. Apparently you know as much about college basketball as you do about math and statistics. I think we can give the coach at least a couple of seasons.

you're all losers...just like this second-rate program.
