49ers officially searching for football coach

The Charlotte 49ers' search for a coach for their first football team became official today.

Although athletics director Judy Rose has been thinking about the hire for several months, the position was posted on the UNC Charlotte, American Football Coaches Association and NCAA websites today. The 49ers will begin football in 2013. Rose hopes to have a coach hired this spring, before the school breaks ground on an on-campus stadium.

"The buzz surrounding the 49ers football program continues to grow," said Rose in a statement. "Each week, we take steps closer to 2013 and with each step comes another level of excitement. The hiring of the head coach is obviously one of the biggest steps in unveiling our program and we are thrilled to officially move the process forward. From our fans' perspective - and from ours - each new announcement makes 49ers Football, 2013 more real. More tangible. And each announcement brings it that much closer."

The new coach will immediately begin recruiting a class of red-shirt freshmen for the 2012-13 school year.

Why the hell would you consider Mike Minter? He is the most two-faced untrustworthy man in the state of NC, short of some of our politicians. Hire someone that doesn't abuse kids.

and it's Knotts, not Knox

I might have a chance at this.

I think the first coach will need to be more of a "personality" than a seasoned x's and o's coach. Face it - they are going to be horrid the first several years - so the challenge will be building the program, support, and recruits. Given that - a recognizable local name is a better option. Think Frank Garcia or Moose Mohammad. I know - maybe not the best coaches - but who better to get people talking and interested.

Odd schedule, No App State , Western Carolina, Elon, Furman, Wofford, Costal Carolina, Citadel, or Davidson(1AAA). THis is a partial schedule, so I hope they make room for more local teams.

We DO play Coastal Carolina and I'm sure we'd schedule games with the others if they are interested in Home/Home games in the 13 and 14 seasons. Their open dates have to match our open dates and being independent the first 2 years means we need to focus on scheduling teams with late season open dates.

o think going indepedent is a bad idea

Virtually all programs go Independent their first 2 years. Both GSU and Old Dominion both played/will play their first 2 season as Independents despite already having full CAA membership. ODU will play their first full season as CAA members next season, GSU the season after. Standard operating procedure for all startups to get a favorable schedule. They're like warm-up seasons.
