Town-hall meeting for football scheduled Feb. 9

If you've got questions about the Charlotte 49ers' football program that begins play in 2013, you can ask them at a town-hall style meeting on Feb. 9 at UNC Charlotte's McKnight Hall.

Chancellor Phil Dubois and athletics director Judy Rose will be at the forum, which is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., and is open to the university community and general public.

"We want to reach out to the campus community, as well as the general public, to help answer questions that they might have about the 49ers football program," Rose said in a statement. "We are aware of the wide-ranging impact this football program will have and we want to hear from those that it will impact. This is their program. It is designed to impact campus life, student spirit, alumni relations and to build a stronger university. To be successful, we need to hear their voices, and this is another great opportunity that is still early in the game."

Doesn't the AD know that's the same night as the Duke-Carolina game?!? I mean come on! Do they not watch sports at all??? HORRIBLE TIMING!

Stellar guys - a meeting to hear our voices midweek at 4PM.

I swear our AD has no clue.

How on earth do you expect to hear from people from the community and active alums when YOU SCHEDULE A MEETING FOR 4:00 ON A TUESDAY?!?!?!?!? This meeting is pointless unless your main clients will be there to give feedback. Who am I kidding? They don't want to hear what we have to say...

Ok Mr. Dubois: It's time for you to come out and say Judy Rose has my full vote of confidence. However, as we do at the end of every year I will sit down and evaluate the health of the Charlotte 49er sports department.

And then fire her "ask me no question!" 4 PM on a Tues!

Can we do a webex?

If I can get off work early and come to this, will I have to pay for parking on campus?

While the time of the meeting is quite inconvenient, if you complain about possibly missing the Duke/Carolina game, you are precisely the type of "fan" the 49ers need to avoid. We have had FAR too many "yeah, I'll root for the 49ers but I'm really a Carolina/Duke/State/etc. fan" types infecting the campus over the years.

I think, although they said "community," this is a meeting designed for students to ask questions. Very few members of the "community" are going to be available at 4 PM on a weekday.

To Chancellor Dubois:

The word is out that alumni before 2000 when Rose changed the name to some idiot gimmick will not support "Charlotte" 49ers football with the current phony name.

The only way UNCC will get 90% of alumni to support the program is to return to correct name since 1965 of UNCC 49ers or
UNC-Charlotte 49ers.

Its a very simple solution to a highly complex problem involving support and funding. Rose needs to be replaced also.

thanks,

Tim Grant

Or Tim we can dump the garbage UNC tag and embrace our destiny of The University of Charlotte. There is no reason for us to be associated with the baby blue. It holds us back and confuses our identity.

To Chancellor Dubois:

The majority of Alumni are in favor of changing our name to the University of Charlotte.

The initials UNCC still cause confusion with UNCCh and other UNC members. We outgrew our satellite status in the 1970s. Some even confuse the last 2 initials with Community College.

We are proud of our University. The University and the new Football program need a name that demands more recognition.

Tim,

If we are going back in time why stop in 1965.

From 1949 to 1965, we were Charlotte College.

We need to stop living in the past and move forward. This is one reason why we are adding Football.

Tim,
As an alumni who lives in the midwest it is embarrasing anytime you even mention UNC Charlotte and everyone assumes it is the Tar Heels. I agree with the idea to call it Charlotte. It is all about perspective and we want to be known nationally and not just regionally. I would like to see the University do more branding than what they have. For a school to have done this since 2000, some networks such as MASN still tag us UNCC.

Tim Grant, respectfully, you are wrong and lack vision. The name "UNCC" smothers us. It was a blessing to change our athletics to "Charlotte," and the school needs to finish the conversion to "University of Charlotte" in order to expedite our growth and enable us to reach our highest potential.

On topic, 4pm Tuesday is a terrible time for a "Town Hall." Nice to see them trying I guess.

Tim Grant, don't skip your meds.

The town hall should've been 6pm Wednesday just before the Xavier home game. They would've sold some extra tickets. Where's the vision on the Athletic Departments part.

Dowless said...

Whoever said Tuesday is messing everyone up. I stand corrected. There is a home women's game at 7pm Wednesday, Febuary 9th at Halton. That may be the reason for the 4pm start time.

I saw a tag line that I really like somewhere else. The line was, "we would have never walked without UNC in our name. We will never run with it in it." There are exceptions to every rule but most the schools that have made a name for themselves use only their name not the system name with the city attached. I will stop my drive to become Charlotte University when NC State becomes UNC at Raliegh.

anon 11:28 AM, "Chapel Hill Phil" Dubois is very aware of Duke/Carolina. He'll be out of this meeting quick enough to pull for beloved Heels.

what a joke.

a_b here. Shout out to all my -C friends!

Mr Dubois, isn't it a bit late in the game to be asking for input on your foolish decision to start a football program? Is anything anyone says going to change your decision? No. So why even ask now?

But congrats on the 19th doctoral program. How many more academic programs would all the student fees dumped into the football program buy?

Lewis said...

a_b asks: "How many more academic programs would all the student fees dumped into the football program buy?"

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it would be pretty much impossible to get the students to approve paying that kind of money for a doctorate program that will only directly benefit a very limited few.

So, to answer your question... none. Thanks for playing, better luck next time.

Lewis (again) said...

...and at this moment, I realize that I misread your 'question.'

The point remains the same. Students are not going to vote to add a program in this field or that field out of their own pockets, not even a much needed medical or law program.

Tim, EVERYONE who graduates from UNC Charlotte is automatically a member of the Alumni Association. And as it's Vice President...I've never heard of you.

Also, anyone who actually wants us to be called UNCC....well, you belong back prior to 2000....

Anon 1:30AM - a_b here again

Is there any way to get off your -C Alumni Association mailing list? I have never given anything to the university, other than my taxes, tuition, parking, and student fees - and that is not going to change. If I just write refused on your mail, and send it back, will that do it?

Anonymous said...

Haha, Tim thought he was speaking for the alumni....

I have never met a student or alumni that is not a proponent of a name change. Evidently they are a rare breed.

The name change WILL happen!!!!!

Hey J - you said "you are precisely the type of "fan" the 49ers need to avoid. We have had FAR too many 'yeah, I'll root for the 49ers"

HAHAHAHAHA

Youre telling me that UNC-C wants to AVOID fans! HAAHAHAHAHA!
You need every single fan you can get! The 30 dorks that sit behind the bench at basketball games aint gonna make the program respectable! You have a basketball program that is spiraling down to oblivion and a football program that is dead before it gets off the ground! You need fans that root for Duke/State/Carolina/App or anybody! Call yourselves UNCC, Charlotte, UofC, and go home to cheer for Harrison Barnes...aslong as they buy a ticket you should be happy!
You are the reason this program is a joke!

Anonymous said...

Tim,

I wanted to write you a letter because everyone else is doing it.

-University of Charlotte

and btw, I love when people have something to say about 104. You really think we aren't going anywhere because we have passionate fans? I need some of what you've been smoking. If you've reduced your bashing to the student section there is no hope for you. Obviously we've made a big enough impact to annoy you so we're doing something right. Hate us, love us, whatever....YOU bought a ticket to come see us right?

I'd like to address a_b's question:
"How many more academic programs would all the student fees dumped into the football program buy?"

Must we go through this again... YOU CANNOT TAKE ACADEMIC MONEY AND SPEND IT ON FOOTBALL. IT CANNOT HAPPEN. IT IS NOT HAPPENING.

It is against NCAA rules. No, it is not some kind of conspiracy , no one is taking money that is rightfully academics and 'dumping' it into athletics. Those are separate funds. All this new money coming in for Football is coming because of Football. No one is forcing people to change their donations from academics to athletics. When we ask for bonds from the state to build our Football program, it does not come out of, nor does it detract from, the academic funding. That is against NCAA regulation and state regulation.

I would listen to and engage in serious discussion anyone who is legitimately against football and has done their research. But the ignorance of a few makes the rest of the few who have a legitimate case against football look bad. Ignorance is the reason why the few people who had serious concerns about Football, got swept under the rug.

Dowless said...

The 49ers have one of the most successful athletics programs in the country for any school that doesn't currently have a football program. You haters are just scared that when Charlotte starts football, then they will take away from your fan base. The University is out growing yours, and the Athletics is out growing yours.

I forget, which community college is UN CC again?

Get over the UNCC garbage...
