49ers advance to Elite 8

The 49ers, getting a goal midway through the first half from freshman Giuseppe Gentile, beat Akron 1-0 in a third-round NCAA men's soccer tournament game Sunday at Transamerica Field.

The victory sends unseeded Charlotte (16-4-2) into a quarterfinal game next weekend at No. 3-seed Connecticut, which beat James Madison 3-0 on Sunday. The game will be played either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Announcement on that should come by Monday morning.

The loss ended the season for the unseeded Zips (15-4-4), who won last season's national championship and were a national finalist in 2009.

Gentile, a product of Charlotte's Ardrey Kell High who was the Atlantic 10's rookie of the year, scored in the game's 25th minute from an assist by Jennings Rex. It was his team-high ninth goal of the season.

Charlotte held Akron striker Darren Mattocks, who had 21 goals, goalless. But Mattocks nearly equalized in the 62nd minute when his point-blank header was turned away by goalkeeper Klay Davis.

The 49ers, who probably were playing their final home game of the season, are 9-0 at Transamerica Field this season and allowed just two goals.

Good for the future new green & blue UNC 49ers

They proved at least their soccer team is at least worthy to bear the great traditional historical name UNC as the oldest public university system in America since 1789.

Informed source says,

The 2yr 200 student part-time tiny private Charlotte College Owls expired in the early 1960s and was replaced in 1965 by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte or UNCC. They were nicknamed the 49ers since the school was built facing HW 49.

The front of the school will soon be reversed from Hw 49 to the new HW 29 entrance within a few years with the new I-485 - I-85 conjoined connector interchange for the 3rd largest UNC campus to be completed at the same time as the beltway. The new 29 entrance and connectors will create much more convenient access and give the school an elevated bigger front valley type picturesque view overlook of buildings and stadiums.

Did you get that info from your tutor? I hear they do all the work in Chapel Hill. Just ask Butch Davis if you don't believe me.

Being on Hwy 49 is a coincidence. But you knew that. In related news, Chapel Hill is located in a county named after a fruit, which seems appropriate.

What an idiot. Hwy 49 was where the board bought 1000 acres off Hodges Dairy in the late 50s to begin the future UNCC campus approved by the NC Legislature in Raleigh in 1965.
The whole campus was a cow pasture for 250 years full of cowshit and why its fertile land today.

Orange County NC was named in 1752 for Prince William V of Orange of the Dutch Republic an ally of England against the 13 rebel colonies.

Mecklenburg-Strelitz County was split from Anson County in 1752.

Uh, anyone with even below average intelligence would "get" that the Orange County thing was a joke. Do you ever get out of your room or do you spend your entire life memorizing history trivia?

^ Wrong again history boy! I posted the original Orange County comment. Just so your simple mind can comprehend, it was intended as word play on the word "fruit" which could refer to an orange or an effeminate person. Please enlighten us as to which Duke originally used word play in 1633. I'm sure you know.
