Jamar Briscoe has left Charlotte 49ers program

Charlotte 49ers guard Jamar Briscoe has left the program, Briscoe’s mother told The Observer on Thursday.

The school later confirmed Briscoe’s departure, saying in a statement that Briscoe has been granted a “release to speak with other institutions in order to transfer from the program.”

“It came down to us wanting to be able to help 'Deuce' find a place where he can be the happiest," 49ers coach Alan Major told The Observer.

Trinita Ricks, however, said he son's departure was not voluntary.

“(Briscoe) was told by the coaches that they couldn’t make him happy,” said Ricks.

Briscoe, who transferred to Charlotte from N.C. Central after the 2008-09 season, averaged 7.3 points and 1.1 assists for the 49ers last season. He was Charlotte’s starting point guard in 2010-11, averaging 12.5 points and 3.0 assists.

Briscoe lost his starting point guard spot last season to freshman Pierria Henry, but finished the season as the starting shooting guard ahead of senior Derrio Green.

Briscoe transferred to Charlotte to play for former coach Bobby Lutz, who was fired after the 2009-10 season. Briscoe was the nation’s second-leading freshman scorer at N.C. Central in 2008-09, averaging 17.8 points. He trailed only Liberty’s Seth Curry, who is now at Duke.

Ricks said Briscoe was to return home to Baltimore later Thursday and will  spend the weekend with his family. She said he plans on finishing the semester at Charlotte and hopes to transfer again. He has one year of eligibility remaining – next season only
and can play again if he goes to a Division II or III program.

Lol...This guy even sees the 49er's basketball program as a joke! This is too funny!!

Good luck Deuce, hope everything works out!

If he graduates he should be able to land at a D1 program as long as they offer a graduate program UNCC doesn't. Hopefully he finds a good landing spot, he is a talented player, would have been great in Lutz's system but didn't fit Major's style. Bad luck for him, hopefully he gets another year somewhere he can contribute and win.

The comedy show out on highway 49 continues. Sadly, so much potential too.

Maybe UNCC should strongly consider putting the basketball program in another conference that they could actually win. Lol...

Whatever happened to coaching up what you have? I guess Major would rather run players off and buy himself another underwhelming year until he can get his own players in.

To the first poster:

I know you're not able to read above a 3rd grade level, but I'll restate what the article says in small words you can comprehend. The coaches made Briscoe go. Briscoe did not have a say in the matter. It sucks, but it's just another step toward Major clearing out guys that don't fit in his system so he can get guys in that do.

And by the way, you are seriously obsessed with the 49ers' program. I don't understand why you feel the need to post the exact same thing in every article or blog post even remotely related to our sports program. Go away and get a life.

Seems simple enough.

This was the best possible outcome. Deuce gets to go shoot where he wants to shoot, and Major doesn't have to worry about keeping a player that doesn't fit his system happy.

Sucks it had to happen, but I completely understand this because I am a truly rational person.

Major is proving time and time again that he is the man for the job. Great hire, Judy!

Good Luck Deuce can't much blame you for wanting to bounce out of this miserable excuse of a D1 program. Major is a proven loser and next year will no doubt be more of the same. Did anyone tell Major that without Deuce he has count em 2 players that have proven they can avg 12+ppg in D1 basketball. Major must be smoking out of Mayfield's weed stash. What idiot coach would actually think that he can climb out of the cellar of the A10 with a group of sophomores that can't shoot or score and inexperienced freshman. Major can't recruit good players nor can he retain good players. What a joke of a program Charlotte has turned out to be. My concern is Major is more concerned with being the big boss than he is about his players or winning basketball games. That's typically what happens whenever you give someone a position of importance when they are not qualified. Hopefully next year the emphasis will be more on winning and less on chasing away Lutz's players. He has not acted like he gives a damn if we win or lose so far. It seems his only priority has been proving he is in charge.

Deuce went in to have an end of season meeting and to figure out what he needs to do to get more time. What can he work on. Why did the season go the way it did instead he walked into an ambush led by coach Oliver who is the muscle cause major is cotton candy. The first thing said was how they no some schools where deuce could be happy. They said how they could see deuce wasnt happy. Now they are mind readers. Then fast talked him while walking him to the compliance office. Then major confirms there is no scholarship for deuce next season. Sounds like he was railroaded to me. He makes no decisions without Oliver input. No other coaches have any juice. Not Odom nor Vandross and surely not perron. Everything that happened to all of these students are because of what Oliver dislikes. MAKES YOU WONDER WHATS REALLY GOING ON. Its truly sad to see what how people abuse their power.

Mrs Green its seems that Major has a cowardly streak that prohibits him being a man or curator of young men.He consistently misleads the fan base to cover up for his severe lack of management and coaching skills. He also will temper the truth in covering up for his assistant coaches. When will the observer seek to tell the players side of the story. This mass exodus of players can not be one sided. I know for a fact the cover up includes Charlotte assistant coach Desmond Oliver as he created a lie that Spears attacked him when Oliver himself was primary the instigator and agitator in the railroading of Shamari Spears.

Sorry to hear that we've lost another quality player. Two years into this "rebuilding" effort, apparently all we can expect is more of the same excuse: "..getting my own players in place, etc, etc, etc." Listen I've managed small and large international organizations. If you can't be successful with the talent that you are given, then you are not going to be successful trying to build your own team. Remember that Melvin Watkins was extremely successful with Jeff's players and Bobby Lutz was successful with Melvin's players. I'm sorry, but I don't buy the excuses. Fire him and let's truly start rebuilding. At the moment we're not even treading water, we're sinking fast.

It took Tom Crean from Indiana University five years to get the program on track. The fans, students, and alumni were very supportive of him and the players. Here, we are upset with the coach after two years of having to deal with walk-offs and academic problems and injuries and family crisis. The reason why the other coaches were successful with players that were not their own was because they had similar coaching styles and some of them were on the same coaching staff (Hence, similar coaching styles). Majors has a different style of coaching and some of Lutz's players are not use to this. major wants to use zone defenses and fast motion offenses. He also wants to play more inside the perimeter than outside of it. This is going to take some time. I feel that Major is doing a good job. He has re-established a recruiting line and is getting players to come to Charlotte (It was predicted earlier that he would not be able to do this). Lutz himself was having problems with recruiting. Also. for those people who feel that Lutz has been vindicated because NC State is in the NCAA, keep this in mind, Lutz is an assistance coach along with other assitant coaches and a well known coach. He did not take NC State to the NCAA, he could not even get Charlotte there when he was coaching in the A-10.

Anonymous said...

What a great comparison!! Tom Crean @ IU compared to Charlotte and Major. Nevermind the fact Crean had taken Marquette to the FINAL FOUR (I'd call that proof he can coach).
Tom Crean took over a NCAA death penalty program which anyone sane knows would take a few yrs to bring back, Major took over a 19 win team that only lost a walk on.

What an idiotic comparison.

Anonymous said...

10:32. I know Crean and Major is no Crean. Everyone knows who the head coach is at NCSU. However, everyone except Judy & major's staff ,(coaches across USA, ESPN & CBS sports commentators) acknowledge Lutz was an awesome hire and a vital part of STATE'S turn around.

Now look over at Judy & Major and say "they know it's us.".

Anonymous said...

Mark Gottfried is the head coach at NC State. Bobby Lutz is a very, very good assistant coach because he has a brilliant tactical mind. However, if you think he will be successful again as a head coach, please consider that just about every ref working hates his guts. Bobby is as out of control during games as Major is passive. His teams at Charlotte at the end played no defense, nor did he care to make them play any. He allowed certain players too much freedom to place themselves above the good of the team. His last season at Charlotte he pulled 19 wins out of a certain part of his anatomy, but if you think the program was in good shape, you didn't watch the last 1/3 of the season including losing to the 12th place team in the A10 at home. Only time will tell is Major is any better. I hope so.

Speaking of Crean, watch that guy speak sometime, he's awesome. Major makes Dom Capers look like Ric Flair. That should of been easily foreseen. The admin knows they have a lemon.

Interesting how most of you Lutz lovers were no where to be seen two years ago. You know who you are hiding behind anonymous. Have we forgotten about his flirting with South Alabama, then turning around saying he was all in, then riding the team to a ridiculous losing streak and 6 players on the court? We fired a Head Coach who lost his will after losing out to Pearl and the Tennessee job. Sometimes change is needed, sometimes more change is needed to get things right! Maybe Major isn't the guy, maybe it's Judy, maybe it's bush, obama, carter, reagan, anyone, bueller. Maybe it's that Michael Beasley character? To Anon 11:42, 11:43 and 10:50. You don't pay attention. I never said that Majors was Tom Crean, what I said was that it took Mr. Crean five years to turn IU around and that we should give Majors more time to turn Charlotte around. The program was in disarray when Majors took over with academic and behavioral problems from the players. Majors had to make the tough decisions and let his best players go instead of their actions brining in possible NCAA violations. Bobby Lutz may have been a good coach but he was not able to make it in the A-10. His style of play was not working and he was not bringing in the right recruits. The AD gave him more five years to turn it around so we should give Majors the same instead of trying to boot him out after year one. If Majors does not improve the program within five years then I will be the first one to say he should go but making Charlotte a top program will be difficult to do, but I believe it can be done.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 11:43 AM. Let me say this to you. Lutz may have been a good hire at NC State as far as an assistant coach is concerned, but he was not a good hire as a head coach. NC State did not want him as a head coach. The last job he had before going to state was that of an assistant coach. Nobody ever said that he was a bad assistant coach, just a bad coach in the A-10.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 5:55. Did any of Lutz players with the academic and behavioral problems get arrested under Major or was that one of the Major's right recruits?

Never forget. The Wabash CC pipeline and Carlos Williams. Lutz and Asst Moxley knew talent.

Anonymous said...

To Anon 6:31pm-Let me go ahead and end your argument for you since you want to go there. How many of Major's players were kicked off the team for behavioral problems. Oh, I'm sorry, how many of his players were suspended from games because of their behaviors. There was only on person under Major that got into trouble and he apologized for his actions. Not like Shamari Spears who not only got suspended from playing games by Lutz but also by Major and the coach at his last university that he played with (Boston College). Not like the other two of Lutz's players who got suspended because of academic problems. When Mayfield get suspended because of his actions then let me know. Otherwise you don't really have an argument.

Some folks seem obsessed with accusing Rose of favoring the women's programs over the men's. There is this little thing called Title 9 that requires every athletic director pay attention to women's sports. Judy has more contacts in women's basketball than many athletic directors because, guess what, she was a basketball coach. If she is attempting to tear. down men's sports to build up women's, she is doing a really lousy job of it. Men's teams make the NCAA tournament about 3 times as often as women's. BTW, I'm not sure Villa 7 did not have some input in the hiring of Cara Consuegra. There is no evidence of Judy being a sexist except in your imagination.

Judy usually does a good job at finding coaches. Especially women's coaches. You may have a valid point about this hire. She may have dropped the ball. Don't assistant coaches pay the Vista 7 organization to recommend they be hired? What a racket that is.

Players are not being "run off", as least, not in Briscoe's case. He wasn't going to get playing time next year, so now he goes somewhere else where he will. Scholarships are year to year, not 4 years. Not all athletes stay the whole 4 years, many times of their own choosing. It is amazing to me that people would expect any coach to take a group of players not suited to his system and not recruit replacements until they graduate and, at the same time, start winning right away.

You can win with another coach's players if they fit your style of play. That wasn't the case here. BTW, Rick Patino , a great coach, did not win his first year at Louisville with Denny Crum's players. Before some moron posts, I am NOT saying Major is as good as Patino. He also isn't as bad as some people think.
I'm sorry that Derrio and Deuce didn't work out, but the fact of the matter is Major wants big guards who can defend. Yes, college basketball can be a cutthroat business. Any "big time" program would discard players when necessary. If you don't believe it, you are living in the past. I hate it for the players, but that's the way it is.

Anonymous said...

Major is as bad as it gets! So all the other coaches who have inherited players in the past and won just happened to unherit players that fit the new coach's style (Get Real)?

If a coach and administration operates like some on this blog have insinuated (it's just business)why should parents or any player being recruited by them trust that those recruiting him has his or their sons education and interest at heart.

The moral at Charlotte has to be at an all time low.

Anonymous said...

I don't believe anyone said that NO coach ever won with players not fitting a certain style of play. I'm sure there are some hall of famers who have done it. I'd be willing to bet that even those couldn't pull it off as a rookie coach. I guess because Major isn't one of the best, he must be the worst. Of course, with the vast sums of money people give to Charlotte athletics, they should be able to hire a proven miracle worker, right?
I have no idea what the morale is at Charlotte, but I do know of a few examples of the administration finding a way to keep athletes in school after they were injured or could no longer play for some reason. Maybe Briscoe would have been happy to stay and be a practice player sitting on the bench. If so, he would be the exception rather than the rule.

Anonymous said...

Morale is directly related to winning. If Charlotte starts winning [insert snarky comment here], morale will be just fine. Calipari did not renew a few scholarships his first year at Kentucky. I suspect the Wildcats' morale is just fine. Once again, no, I'm not saying Major is Calipari.

No problem with Major wanting big guards who can defend, he just should have told the short guards that two years ago. Don't use people for your advantage. Remember the short guards help him get 10 wins against much tougher competition and the tall guards only help him get 3 more wins against much weaker competition.
