Judy Rose: Temple's exit doesn't change outlook; Niners keeping eye on CUSA-Mountain West

Charlotte 49ers athletics director Judy Rose said Thursday that the impending departure of Temple from the Atlantic 10 to the Big East doesn’t alter Charlotte’s commitment to the conference.

“It doesn’t change our outlook at all,” said Rose. “We’re definitely not concerned about the A10 in basketball. I’d be crazy to say that losing Temple wasn’t big, but there are plenty of other schools in this league that have excellent programs.”

The Atlantic 10 doesn’t sponsor football, and Rose is continuing to look for an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision league for football. The school begins play in the sport in 2013. She is also looking for a place for Charlotte to potentially land in the Football Bowl Subdivision somewhere down the line.

Charlotte’s football program will start as an FCS independent. The Southern Conference and Big South have said they wouldn’t extend football-only invitations for the 49ers, and the Colonial Athletic Association offered Charlotte a spot, but only in all sports.

If the 49ers are to move up to FBS, they’ll have to be invited by a conference and meet several NCAA-mandated criteria, including having an average attendance of at least 15,000 over a two-year rolling period.

The 49ers have already been mentioned in media reports as a possibility when and if a potential new league formed by a merger of Conference USA and the Mountain West adds programs. That league would also include current CUSA-members East Carolina and Marshall. Appalachian State, which is looking to move up to FBS, could also be a possibility.

“It could make sense, but we don’t know enough about it yet,” said Rose. “It would certainly be of interest and be something we’d have to look at. But we’re trying to find out as much as we can about all different kinds of scenarios, all of it being driven by football.”

I am at Trump Paza in Atlantic City getting ready for the A-10 tournament . The fans are complaining about the tournament being moved to Brooklyn next year. They don't like the idea at all. Heard one lady say no shopping and another said no gaming.

From the crowd it is obvious the A-10 will miss Temple. It would be like losing Duke or UNC in the ACC.

The third post needs to be removed. There's no need to name call.

As for the article, its pure coach speak but that's what is expected at this point. I am glad we're at least open to the possibility to join the Alliance.

In a vacuum the A10 is an o.k. basketball conference. However, UNCC being in the A10 has seriously damaged the basketball program. There is absolutely no ties to Philly and NYC schools, might as well be in a conference that contains schools in France. Nothing there. Pitiful is the word that comes to mind. No interest in UNCC basketball until they change up conference affiliation. Wise up UNCC admin, put the school somewhere that students and fans can identify with, for once. Go Niners.

I still think we should take the CAA up on its offer. Yes, the A-10 is a superior basketball league to the A-10. But that isn't guaranteed once Temple leaves.

The CAA would be a slight step down for hoops, but would give us the football home we need, and the A-10 is the worst conference in the country in every sport except hoops. As long as we are in the A-10, the baseball team is going to have to win 55 games a year or the A-10 tourney to get in the NCAAs because the A-10 sucks so bad. So in my opinion, there are more pros than cons about joining the CAA.

Oh, and speaking of non-revenue sports, are there any plans for our soccer team to get rid of those ugly-a** uniforms??????

Overhaul the whole athletic department. Current leadership is dead set on being mediocre, at best. Football should have been put in place 15 years ago. For such a large and growing campus, enrollment, how can this be? With close to 25,000 students, they are closing in on Chapel Hill and ECU. This city has been starving for a major college sports program to call their own and they either can't or refuse to deliver. I guess it's difficult to shake off the cobwebs of being tagged as a "commuter" school. It's tough enough to try and compete and recruit against the ACC but as long as we're in the A10, you can forget about it. Take the St. Bonaventure basketball game as an example. Someone at the top needs to roll the dice and make some bold moves soon or the football program will last less than 10 years. You just can't continue to go through the motions with athletics as alumni interest will sooner or later dry up. Look at it now. I feel sorry for the athletes that do give 100%. I wonder how many basketball players will try to transfer after this season or how many recruits will back out. As much as I try, it's just hard to think positive about the athletic program and current direction.

Charlotte needs to show Judy the door. Bad hire in basketball and she is dumb to stick with the A10.

What do you want Judy to say people?

"If the Alliance calls we'll jump"

Of course Judy is going to publically endorse continued membership in the league we're in, all the way up to the point that the papers are dry and the notary's seal is on a new conference deal.

Major has a 4 year deal, he'll get atleast one more to turn it around, then he's atleast on the hot seat. Very few schools fire a coach in the second year. We even give Presidents four years to fix things in this country.

Quit being so whinny and impaient.

Perhaps Judy Rose should listen to more WFNZ and the alumni and fans that follow UNCC basketball. Just yesterday many were complaining about the fact that they feel no connection to the program since emoting to the A10. I think they would benefit greatly with moving to a conference more centrally located in the south, even if it is a smaller conference.

Patience? I've been waiting since 1977? I ain't going be around forever. At this rate my daughter who is a Charlotte graduate will to explain to her grandchildren why this program stinks...

The problem is not the A10...the problem has been the dramatic shortage of UNCC basketball talent to compete.....oure and simple.

From Atlantic City: UMASS upsets Temple as 5 ft 9 Chaz Williams was too much for Temple to handle!

A-10 fans want to know when & why Charlotte left the conference.

Actual attendance for the tournament will drop like a rock now, as Temple fans head back to Philly

at what point do we start demanding more?

Judy is a joke.

St Bonnie beats St Joe's in close game. Questionable call in the closing seconds & a block shot made the difference.

A-10 fans still want to know when & why Charlotte left the conference. Said they have not seem them in a couple of years.

When you team is sorry and the seasons over but everyone else in the nation is playing you will do anything to distract from your poor decisions.

A-10 Update: in the third game St Louis beat La Salle in a hard fought battle 78--72. SL performed like a well oiled machine as four players scored in double digits & a fourth had 9.

A-10 update: last game of the night was a one point win by Xavier over Dayton. Dayton led lost of the game but fail behind in the last minute. They then missed a lay up and 3 point shot in the last 5 seconds.

The Boardwalk Arena caught on fire during the second half and smoke started filling the the building. The teams continued to play through the excitement as the fire department arrived.

I vote for total move to CAA. It is not a down grade for anything except maybe baseball but it's not like we are in a good baseball conference now. Soccer is good if not better, basketball over all is better, and we would have teams south of us and in our own state. I would only think about moving to the C-USA if they joined with MWC. I don't know why we haven't moved all sports to CAA already.

Please stop blaming Judy Rose for all the problems. She made a hire, live with it. Personally, I would show Major the door because he's not a good head coach. He has made Braswell better to his credit. Rose doesn't step out on the court, players do and they shoul get the blame. The reason people feel no connection to the program is that they are a losing program that does not play any inspirational basketball at all. They are tedious to watch. It has nothing to do with A-10 which is a great league. If you don't like Rose, get off your lazy butts, pursue an advanced degree, and become the AD yourself.

A-10 update (day 2 game 1). St Bonnie beats UMaSS by 5 as they are led by their two forwards. Conger (22) & Nicholson (19). The game was even closer than the final score. Next up St. Louis & Xavier.

Side note: I would rather be in CAA for all sports too. However, the A-10 is not Chralotte's excuse for being a bad program. It's bad decisions at the top, then Judy, then the coach.

Judy is the butt end of bad jokes in Atlantic City this week during the A-10 tournament.

A-10 update: (second day 2nd game). Xavier beats St. Louis in another close game. The Xavier guards were too much for St Louis to handle as Tu Holloway (21), Wells (14), & Lyons (14) led the way. In the A-10 tournament you have to beat Xavier & Temple (they are the home teams). St Bonnie will have their hands full tomorrow.

I've been to many tournaments teams from ACC, C-USA, Southen& Regionals and as far as close games this is the best tournament I've been to

Right from the go I said the Colonial is a perfect fit. Basketball not much better if it is better at all in the A-10.Football would instantly have some nice rivalries.Put the lights in right away. You have to have some night games.

Good for the CAA. We do not need anymore Basketball RPI killers in this league.

The CAA is where Charlotte belongs.
There's also of talk of ECU moving back to the CAA and joining the new merger as a football only member. If this happens, Richmond may be persuaded to rejoin too.

Get your facts straight idiot. ECU would only look for another home for their other sports if they received a football only invite from The Big East.

Charlotte should leave the A-10! I am a die hard A-10 fan and Charlotte doesn't even care about the league.
They are NOT even showing the A-10 Championship game on TV in the 49ers TV market! HORRIBLE!

49ers get whipped by A-10 teams in hoops and miss their old C-USA rivals. Please leave!

A-10 Update: (Championship). St. Bonnie. surprised Xavier and everyone else as 6ft 9 Nicholson scored 26 points. Xavier failed score enough from the outside to open up the middle for their big men.

A10 Tournament Reflexion:
Best Team Spirit - St. Bonnie
Best Colors- Dayton
Best Band - St. Louis
Worst Mascot- St.Joe
Over used color - Maroon
Only A10 Basketball team to win Mational Championship - La Salle (?)
Were Charlotte stands with NCAA appearances three way tie for 5th with 11 appearances

ECU moving their sports to the CAA would also be an RPI killer for the CAA. Even if they did move their team to the Big East, which isn't going to happen, the CAA would be wise not to open their doors to them and their horrible athletic program. ECU should just move to Division 3. No one cares.

A10 puts 3 teams into the NCAA. Of course, everyone living in Charlotte thinks the A10 is terible because the Observer wants them to. The 49ers may be terrible but their conference is not.

Anonymous said...

I believe the A10 put 4 teams in the NCAA. St.Bonnie, St Louis, Temple & Xavier.

I guess that ends the which conference is best CAA or A10 discussion. I still think if Charlotte can't get in the Alliance They would be better off in the long run in the CAA for all sports.

Anonymous said...

A-10 got 4 bids and ACC got 5. Conference ranks: ACC-5, A-10 6th.

These two conferences are remarkably close to each other despite what the observer would lead you to believe. Also the ACC should have only gotten 4 teams in. NC-State has no business being in the field of 68.

Anonymous said...

anon 728 -

I think you're being sarcastic (funny, btw), but I'd say that ECU fans might chase their AD & chancellor with pitchforks & torches if they went from Big East aspirations to the CAA. At least the MAAc is a historically better league with more than one lousy bid (a 12 seed!)

That's what they should do. ECU can join the MAAC.

Good luck to Bobby Lutz. He helped Iowa State and NC State make the NCAA Tourney.

^ There must not anything wrong with face paint. I see a LOT more light blue face paint than green. Weirdos? Most 49er fans have actually seen the UNC Charlotte campus, unlike some other unnamed institution's "fans"

The fact of the matter is Charlotte basketball was on the verge of something special 10 years ago and the moment has passed. There is nothing, nothing, nothing to indicate it on the verge of happenning again, sad but true!

Anonymous said...

Looks like Butler wants in to the A-10. Could be some good competition...

Anonymous said...

For those of you keeping score at home, the A-10 had 8 bids (4 NCAA and 4 NIT). The ACC had 6 (5 NCAA and 1 NIT). Just saying...

Maybe The Observer will write something about the strength of the A-10. It's not the ACC, but it's not far behind unless you are based in the Carolinas and can't see for miles and miles.

Troll on.

I want to thank the person who kept giving updates on the A-10 Tournament on this site. at least we had some idea of what was happening.

Unless they move to a power conference (ask Temple), no one is going to give a rats ass if Charlotte plays St. Bonnie, Rhode Island, Richmond, Fordham, Dayton, or whoever. To the casual fan, they want to see matchups, good and exciting basketball.
