Rally planned to show support for football

Charlotte 49ers students and organizers of the Charlotte Football Initiative are planning a show of support for the addition of a football program.

The rally, dubbed "March to the Endzone," will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Belk Tower on campus where students and alumni are encouraged to gather. The rally is set to conclude with the delivery of a mock goalpost to Bissell House, the residence of Chancellor Dr. Philip Dubois.

On Sept. 18, Dubois is set to present his research and recommendation to the school's board of trustees on whether it should add a Division I football program in the future.

Charlotte's pep-band, the Golddusters dance team and cheerleaders are all expected to participate, organizers say.

This is awesome. It's the first time we've had the opportunity to gather publicly and show our support for football.

I would encourage all students, alums, faculty, staff, and anyone else who cares about this University or college football to show up.

Jim, are basketball season ticket sale up or down this year over the last few years? I worry the economic outlook might sag sales and then show a lack of alumni support... I got mine!

COme on people. We're not going to get 10,000 people for this type of rally. Probably a few hundred and I think that will look just fine!

Posted on behalf of Dr. Arthur Jackson, UNC Charlotte Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs:

Dear UNC Charlotte 49er Fans,
It is with great anticipation that our community awaits the recommendation regarding the future of football at UNC Charlotte. I am aware that on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:30pm the Charlotte Football Initiative is hosting a pro-football rally at the Belk Tower, followed by a march to the Belk Track. I, along with other members of the University community, recognize the importance of this event as an opportunity for UNC Charlotte students, alumni, and community members to voice their support for a football program.

In anticipation of a large turnout for Tuesday’s rally, members of the University community along with rally organizers have met to discuss plans for campus and individual safety. In an effort to prevent the impediment of normal University functions and traffic flow, the University has reserved the Belk Track as a larger and more effective venue for the final destination of the march. The Chancellor will give his remarks to participants of the rally at the Belk Track, but will not speak about his recommendation until the formal Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, September 18th. In the event of rain, the march will end at McKnight Auditorium, located in the Cone University Center.

In order to ensure a successful rally, I would like to inform you of the University’s expectations at this event:
1.Behavior should be conducted in a manner that is considerate, polite, and respectful.
2.Do not participate in vandalism, or damage to University or individual property.
3.Comply with any instructions from University officials.
4.Alcoholic beverages are not allowed in public.
5.Participants are asked to hold each other accountable to these expectations.

As many eyes are on UNC Charlotte during this historic time, I encourage all fellow 49er fans to represent the University community in a positive manner. Members of the Student Affairs staff will be in attendance at the rally to provide support for a safe event. These staff members will be easily identifiable by colored arm bands and name badges. Please do not hesitate to seek out these staff members if assistance is needed.
Best of luck for a successful rally.

Go Niners!

Dr. Arthur R. Jackson
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
