Lutz to Iowa State? Not yet

Former 49ers basketball coach Bobby Lutz has been linked to an assistant's position at Iowa State in the past several hours. Lutz might end up in Ames, but if he does, a deal won't be struck this week.

Two sources close to the situation confirm that new Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg and Lutz have been talking. But there's no deal yet and nothing would be decided until the middle of next week at the earliest. -- David Scott

As a UNC-Charlotte alum, I have opinions...

1. Lutz 1990's-2002: Good recruiting in a difficult area close to Duke, UNC, NCSU; good results including C-USA championships in a -tough- bball conference.

Lutz 2002-2010: Poor recruiting, limited success, middle of the pack in a 2nd-tier conference.

I loved Bobby when he was getting the job done, but he stopped. Last season was a pathetic excuse of a finish given the early season success and first decent complimentary roster he had in 7 years.

2. A D1 coach taking an assistant job halfway across the country, that says that universities with job openings aren't interested in Lutz, either. It's not Judy Rose, it's not UNC-Charlotte, it's Bobby. If he can't get a D1 head-coaching job, it just might be that his recent failure is the reason, not Judy.

Truth be told, as much as I liked Bobby, he should have gone 2-3 years ago.

4:21------trust me, Bobby could be a HC somewhere right now, much closer to home, but why should he? Charlotte owes him $1m UNLESS he gets a HC job. Now, as an AC he will receive 2 NICE salaries.

Another note; Bobby was EXCELLENT through 2005, and mediocre from 2005-2010.

Bobby is not much of a man if he's taking asst job so he could get two paychecks. Come on Bobby, have a little ambition.

Yea like you wouldnt take 2 paychecks over 1? Please.

HC experience is valuable. Odds are he will end up HC in the ACC SEC in the end. Majors will end up back at OSU as HC within 10 yrs (he wishes).

Could the change in conferences, from a respected mid major, to the lowly A-10 have anything to do with the quality of recruits Bobby got, and in turn, affected his win-lose record?

Judy dropped the ball once with football in the early 90's. If we had a team, even D-AA, we could have joined the Big East like UCONN did with its football team.

We need to move forward with football now, when the Big 10 starts raiding the Big East for teams, the dominoes will fall and for the Big East to survive, they will need to pick up 4-6 teams. Charlotte is a major market they would covet, but we need football to move to them.

Hey ghoul

Open your purse and buy some FSLs dum-dum. Football is already approved and on the way.

I am happy for Bobby. If this is the job he takes, he's going to help "Mayor Fred" be successful. He's going to get a gerat job and he doesn't have to rush.

He will get players and he will help with X's & O's. -- Mark

Hopefully Lutz will land the job and that will be that.
